Really two and a half stars. I didn't like the writing style - too cold and distant. I couldn't connect with the main character, either. It's just not for me.
Just did a reread of this gem and upping my rating from 4⭐️ to 5⭐️
This is such a great series and I love the darkness mixed with great characters and full on satisfying, well crafted mysteries. Ahhhh!!!! This series is just so great!
As murders start happening in a small town outside of Ashville, it looks like a known serial killer may have found a new home. Scarpetta, a newly hired advisor to the FBI, has been called in to look at the bodies and give her expert opinion. Meanwhile, Lucy, her niece, is thriving in her new position of helping the FBI build a top secret computer program. When it's discovered that there's proof that she went into a top security area in the middle of the night and messed with records, she denies it. But she's obviously hiding something. Did she do it? Or is she covering for someone?
I enjoyed this book in the series. I am not thrilled how her relationship with the men closest to her was written in this one, but otherwise, it was a good read.
It's kinda funny how lucky I was when I picked it up. Saw it on my book app and got intruiged by the title and decided to give it a go. I knew I had read a few books in the series but didn't knew where I was in the order. But decided to read it anyway even if I would miss a few books. But luckily it was the exact book I needed to read. Sadly though I didn't enjoy this book very much either. Thinks its time for me to let the series go. 5 books in an i didn't love any of them.
n n Final Thoughtsn n 4 of 5 stars to Patricia Cornwell's fifth book in the Kay Scarpetta series, The Body Farm, published in 1994. The title alone tells you what kind of book this will be, and it is full of thrills and suspense. Scarpetta has an opportunity to try to capture a serial killer she's dealt with sometime in the past. And with the history she needs to revisit in this one, you will learn a lot more about who she is and what's happened to bring her to today.
Another good part of this book is the development of Scarpetta's relationship with her niece, Lucy. Lucy's now 21 and supposed to be an adult; however, her behaviors are still somewhat immature. I like getting to know the character more, even though she isn't too likable at this point. Detective Pete Marino is prominent again, and you want to love him... but he still makes you angry.
As Scarpetta finds different body parts all over the place, she knows she's close to meeting her match. The cleverness and complexity in this book makes it one of the better ones. It's still early on in the series before the books get too "governmental" and "formal," in regard to Scarpetta's career. The games being played are quite amusing and scary. Given the creepiness of the killer's plans, this is another fine entry in the series.

I am new to reading Patricia Cornwell and I have so far read two of her books, which unfortunately I did out of order. Despite my little snafu though, I have found that I really enjoy her books and her writing style. This (like probably most of her books) was a thriller/suspense and it definitely kept my attention throughout the whole book, as I constantly read quickly to see what was going to happen next. Cornwell is really good about developing characters that you care about and despite their sometimes farfetched job skills, it's not necessarily flaunted and somehow seems believable (I'm speaking specifically about the main character, Kay Scarpetta, who just happens to be a doctor, a lawyer and a consultant for the FBI). The story moved along really quickly and I didn't come across any lagging areas. My only issue with it was that Cornwell seemed to put a lot of time and effort into creating the suspense and going through layers upon layers of different theories from the main characters; however, the end seemed to happen kind of quickly and easily, which was a bit of a disappointment. It seemed a bit rushed to me in that all of the puzzle pieces that were coming out of left field throughout the whole book as clues to the mystery, just suddenly seemed to fit together and that was that. I would still recommend this book and this author to anyone looking for a good suspenseful thriller and I look forward to reading more of her books as well.
I was absorbed in the story. The author had a way of making you feel the tension in the room through the relationships between the characters. Having started the books not in the beginning of the series, I can see how I could have missed some context. However, it was plain as day how tangled their relationships are.
The actual mystery was interesting but the ending was unsatisfying. It felt anticlimactic. I wish they spent more time unravelling the aftermath of the ending.
It started out promising with a rather surprising ending, but unfortunately, there were some slow parts I only skimmed over, especially towards the end. I really liked the forensic investigation parts best in this Dr. Scarpetta novel
