Lo encontré mucho más retorcido de lo que esperaba, entiendo porqué la gente lo ama.

La fascinación de los niños por la lectura es innata. Basta con que te sientes a a su lado a leerles cualquier historia llena de emoción, de personajes heroicos o malvados y de que les invites a ser partícipe de esa aventura y puedes compruebar como aparece en sus ojos ese brillo que solo les puede proporcionar la lectura.
Eso lo conocían los grandes cuentistas de la historia. Héroes, guerreros, buscadores de aventuras se veían acompañados de otros, lobos, brujas o cualquier criatura de malas intenciones que se cruzara en su camino. Y la presencia de esos adversarios tan temibles eran necesarios para que la la historia funcionase.
Los crios se estremecían cuando su personaje favorito estaba en peligro, cuando se encendían las calderas y cerraban las puertas, cuando una risa maligna aventuraba un mal desconocido frente al que poco podían hacer unos niños desvalidos. Y de ese modo podían saborear el éxito ante esas adversidades, celebrar el triunfo de la inteligencia, la valentía o el esfuerzo y sacar conclusiones positivas del mal trago que acababan de pasar.
Por desgracia ese tipo de lecturas se fue diluyendo para enseñar a los niños mundos en los que el mal era simplemente un complemento de diversión para nuestro perfecto protagonista. Personajes de buen corazón que son entrañables y patosos y que serán juzgados por desviarse un poco de la línea establecida. Malos que caen en el olvido frente a sus antecesores inolvidables.
Por eso una historia como esta, bueno en realidad todas las de Roald Dahl son necesarias. Historias que vuelven a esa tradición de colocar a los niños frente a enemigos temibles capaces de cometer todo tipo de atrocidades a los sufridos protagonistas. Quienquiera que lea esta historia con sus hijos y vea el comienzo de este libro sabrá a lo que me refiero. Esa descripción minuciosa de los patrones de reconocimiento de las brujas y, luego, la primera aparición de una de ellas es algo sobrecogedor. Y a los crios les encanta.
Porque ellos necesitan sentir ese terror para poder sentirse parte de la historia. Lejos de traumatismos fingidos y de pesadillas olvidadas, los pequeños se divierten y se crecen ante este tipo de adversidades. De ahí que cuando la historia consigue llegar a su climático final ya ellos llegan a sentir el amor por la lectura y las historias que las caracterizan. Y así has creado nuevos lectores.
En esta historia Roald Dahl te presenta a unas brujas despiadadas, capaces de todo con tal de conseguir sus propósitos. Insaciables, temibles, organizadas y dispuestas a acabar con los niños cueste lo que cueste. Frente a ellas nuestro protagonista, un niño que ya conoce los peligros a los que se enfrenta.
Y todo se lee con fluidez, emoción y con la tensión necesaria para que la aventura no decaiga en ningún momento. Llegando al desenlace necesario y coherente de una aventura que se convierte en inolvidable.
Si no han leído las brujas de Roald Dahl se están perdiendo uno de los mejores libros infantiles que se han escrito nunca. Ahora bien, tengan cuidado, porque desde que terminen esta historia verán con otros ojos a cualquier mujer que se rasque la cabeza de manera insistente.

È decisamente creepy per essere un libro per bambini. Immagino che se lo avessi letto quindici anni fa mi avrebbe spaventata, e non poco.
Da evitare accuratamente guanti, parrucche, scarpe strette, narici spropositate, denti azzurrini e occhi vitrei!

Roald Dahl’s books weave an intricate spell, one that ensures that child, teen and adult alike can get lost in the story being told. The Grand High Witch is one creepy woman and Dahl’s depiction of her spot wonderful.

Snappy writing and lovely illustrations ensure that I’ll be picking this up again to read myself but also to read to my younger cousins.

"Jamaar mama," zei mijn dochter tijdens het fietsen naar de winkel, "over die heksen. Hoe kan dat nu, dat ze kindjes niet graag hebben, zijn ze dan zelf geen kind geweest?"
Daar had ik nog niet over nagedacht.
"Heksen zijn geen ménsen," zei ik. "Dus dan zijn ze ook niet eerst kind geweest. Ze ZIJN er gewoon."
Mijn dochter was tevreden met het antwoord.

Maar, dacht ik in mezelf verder, ze hebben wel verschillende leeftijden. Want er zijn heel oude heksen die niet meer in bomen kunnen klimmen. Dus ze verouderen wel. Dus ze zijn er niet altijd geweest. Dan verschijnen ze of zoiets. Maar als ze gewoon verschijnen, wat heeft de ganse onderneming van de hoofdpersonages dan nog voor zin? Wat jammer.

Maar dat heb ik dus niet luidop gezegd.

(Leve de kritische zin van mijn 7-jarige om me nieuwe inzichten te geven in het boek dat ik als kind wel honderdduizend keer gelezen heb. En ja, het is nog steeds fantastisch. Mijn kinderen waren het met me eens.)

Es de esos libros que te llegan adentro y tocan algo de ti que no te esperas. Empecé leyendo con la mentalidad de que es un clásico para niños y en algún momento habría que leerlo. Pero desde la primera página me atrapó: sentí miedo con la Gran Bruja, sentí pena por el niño, sentí alegría, asco y tensión.
Si alguna vez tengo hijos se lo leeré más de una vez para que sepan identificar a las brujas cuando las vean por la calle.

Believe it or not, this is the first Roald Dahl book I’ve read. But it definitely won’t be the last. I’m already eyeing classics like The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Matilda, all of which have all been adapted, like this one, into successful movies and/or plays.

After his parents are killed in a car accident, an unnamed young English boy goes to live with his grandmother in Norway. His grandmother tells him about the existence of witches, who look like everyone else but are completely bald (they wear wigs), have claws instead of fingers (hence they always wear gloves) and have no toes, among other tell-tale signs. The worst thing about witches, however, is that they hate children. To witches, children smell like dogs’ droppings. And it’s each witch’s duty to get rid of one child per week.

The worst witch of them all is the Grand High Witch of All The World, a particularly vicious and powerful witch who leads all of the others and travels to various countries helming their Annual Meetings.

When the narrator’s grandmother, now settled in England, comes down with pneumonia, her doctor advises she not go on holiday in Norway but stay in England. So the narrator and she travel to the coastal town of Bournemouth, where they stay in a nice hotel. There’s something very fishy about some patrons of this hotel, as the boy and his grandmother are soon to discover.

Dahl’s imagination and powers of description are simply amazing. I love that the boy’s grandmother is fond of smoking cigars, and that, because of her own childhood encounter with a witch, she’s missing a thumb. As with Charlie, Dahl understands children love candy and sweets – a detail that will figure into the witches’ dastardly scheme. And there’s another young character who has a ravenous appetite, something that readers of all ages can understand.

There are two superb, extremely tense extended scenes, one set in the ballroom of the hotel, the other in the hotel’s kitchen. In both, Dahl successfully mixes suspense and comedy, and although there are obviously fantasy elements in the story he grounds everything with realism and logic.

Quentin Blake’s illustrations are brilliant, enhancing Dahl’s prose and making you see things the author has so carefully described. And I adored the ending, which I don’t want to spoil.

I am currently trying to read all of Roald Dahl's books! When reading this book I realized that I definitely read this when I was in elementary school :) It brought back some memories. I loved this book and the creativity and that Roald does with this story line.

One of my daughter's favourite books and I still have it today. Storytelling at it's best.

Uno de mis propósitos de medio año (me ha entrado de repente la neura) es retomar la lectura en inglés. En el instituto leía bastante en el idioma y con los años lo fui dejando. Así que decidí tomármelo en serio y hacerlo de forma gradual, empezando por algún libro infantil y sencillo que tuviera ganas de leer.

De esta manera fue cómo terminé leyendo «The witches». Este es un libro muy famoso y que la mayoría de gente leyó en su infancia y que yo no había tenido todavía el placer de disfrutar. Es sabido que Roald Dahl es un storyteller de aquellos que cuesta encontrar así que sabía que no me iba a defraudar.

La historia trata de un niño que crea un vínculo muy estrecho con su abuela tras el fallecimiento de sus padres. Esta, le da el cariño necesario para ayudarlo ante la pérdida y decide explicarle historias. Así es cómo termina contándole la verdadera y única realidad sobre las brujas: existen y están en todas partes.

Este libro ha supuesto para mí un entretenimiento mayor de lo esperado, me he reído, he disfrutado enormemente de las descripciones físicas de las brujas y cómo reconocerlas y he amado a este niño que nos brinda una gran lección. Es una lectura muy amena, distraída e ideal para los peques (y no tan peques).

En conclusión, me ha parecido una historia encantadora, rebosante de cariño. La relación entre el protagonista y su abuela es enternecedora y emotiva, el sentimiento es palpable y creo que eso es lo que le da ese punto tan cálido.

One of my purposes for this year is to read again in English. In high school I read a lot in this language but I didn’t continue after this time. So I decided to make it seriously and do it gradually, starting with simple children's book that I wanted to read.

This is how I ended up reading "The witches." This is a very famous book that I hadn’t had the pleasure of enjoying. I was sure that Roald Dahl wouldn’t disappoint me.

The story is about a boy who have a extremely sweet bond with his grandmother. After the fateful death of his parents, his grandmamma to help, decides to tell him stories. This is how she tell for the child the true and only reality about witches: they exist and live everywhere.

This book has been more entertainment for me than expected, I have laughed, I have greatly enjoyed the physical descriptions of witches and how to recognize them. It is a very pleasant reading, distracted and ideal for the little ones (not only for these).

In conclusion, I thought it was a charming story, full of love. The relationship between the protagonist and his grandmother is so emotional and wonderful.
