I love Roald Dahl. What wonderful children's literature he wrote. Even though its for children adults love it too. Like Enid Blyton and Beatrix Potter. Lovely easy reading. I strongly recommend all three authors.

The BFG, Roald Dahl

The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant) is a 1982 children's book written by British novelist Roald Dahl.

The start of the book begins with an eight-year-old orphan girl named Sophie lying in bed in an orphanage run by Mrs. Clonkers.

She cannot sleep, and sees a strange sight in the street; a giant man, carrying a bag and an odd trumpet. He sees Sophie, who tries to hide in bed, but the giant picks her up through the window. Then he runs quickly to a large cave, which he enters.

When he sets Sophie down, she begins to plead for her life, believing that the giant will eat her.

The giant laughs and explains that most giants do eat human beings (which he pronounces as "human beans"), and that the people's origins affect their taste.

For example, people from Greece taste greasy while people from Panama taste of hats. The giant then says that he will not eat her as he is the Big Friendly Giant, or BFG for short.

The BFG explains that she must stay with him forever so that no one can know of his existence.

He warns her of the dangers of leaving his cave as his nine neighbours are sure to eat her if they catch her.

He also explains what he was doing with the trumpet and suitcase. He catches dreams, stores them in the cave, and then gives the good ones to children all around the world. He destroys the bad ones.

The BFG then explains that he eats the only edible plant that will grow in the giants' homeland: snozzcumbers, which are disgusting striped cucumber-like vegetables with wart-like growths that taste like frog skins and rotten fish to Sophie and cockroaches and slime wanglers to the BFG. ...

I bought this book awhile ago and after reading a few untoward things about the author dismissed it. But now we have The BFG movie out in all of it's Steven Spielberg splendor, and I decided to give it a quick read to see if my GK's would like it. As usual Roald Dahl author of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and Matilda, seems to write with some question as to whom his audience might be. This is THE # 1 selling Children's book on Amazon right now, with an age recommendation of 7 and up? The Big Friendly Giant who kidnaps Sophie only because she has seen him, is a "nice and jumbly" giant which is good as the other 9 in the story are cannibalistic meanies, whose eating of children from various countries ( children from Wales (Whales) taste fishy etc) and such antics as spitting out the bones are never really described in much detail merely mentioned. Also the BFG has a word mangling and grammar problem throughout the entire book," By goggles, your head is not so full of grimesludge after all. I can see you is not born last week." And some of his words get just bad enough to no doubt delight 3rd- 4th grade boys ( probably including my Grandson) ..you know things like slimesnotters etc, perhaps a funny read aloud but loads of made up words that most likely cannot be read, pronounced, or understood by 8 year olds. Anyway I'm giving it 4 stars, even though I can see some might have issues with it. I'll try the read aloud this WE and see the response. And as mentioned earlier, I really dislike the title..knowing full well the first thing adults think of for BFG will not be Big Friendly Giant, lol ... A Roald Dahl trademark move.

Somehow, I managed to grow up and never read this book. It's a BOB title next year, so I figured I should knock it out, plus hey--I liked "The Enormous Crocodile" and "The Witches" and I loved "Mathilda" and "James and the Giant Peach"...let's do this thing.

No. Just--no. It had an enticing beginning. But that's about it. At first, I thought maybe it was just a book that I would've enjoyed more had I read it when I was a child (similar to how I feel about the movie "Legend"--that I would've enjoyed it more had I first watched it when I was younger and not in my mid-20's). To be perfectly honest, by the time I finally got to main conflict of the giants heading out to eat scads of English children, I started skimming chapters because I just couldn't bear to suffer through this book any longer. At first I thought that this made me a despicable human being; after all, isn't this considered a classic, well-loved children's book? However, there is a small, but very real, sect of readers out there who feel the same way I do. So while I may share a minority viewpoint, I take comfort in the fact that I am not alone.

Seriously, I taste bile. I would give this negative stars if I could.

Few children's books captivate me like The BFG. Roald Dahl's ability to create magical worlds is unparalleled, and his repulsive man-eating giants strike just the right balance between kid's nightmare and comedy.

And of course, the character of The BFG himself is just gorgeous. Not to mention his scrumdiddlyumptious way of speaking, which always used to make me laugh!

My boys love this book - which just goes to show, some kids books are timeless. No doubt we'll all be reading it to their kids too, in the future!

Libro della mia infanzia, uno dei primi che inaugurò il mio amore per la lettura, rileggerlo a distanza di 15 anni é stata pura magia.

This is such a charming and cute little story about an orphan befriending a Big Friendly Giant who gives little children dreams and tries to stop 9 mean and ugly other giants who steal
"human beans" from their bed and eat them. It's a ridiculous story but I remember my elementary school teacher reading it aloud to us. Reading it as an adult, I can recall so much of the story, which speaks volumes to how much it resonated with me.

Roald Dahl is definitely part of my childhood and I cherish all of his books.

re-read.

I remember reading this and not being able to put it down. Re-reading it now is obviously a different experience.

It's far more simplistic than I remember, full of grotesque things that delight younger readers. It also felt terribly English too.

But when I was younger this was a fave of mine. To be honest, it has dated a little, bit I still think it wonderful. And I think it's still a magical book for younger readers.

Great story and writing, but bad illustrations. I've never cared for Quentin Blake's art style; even as a kid, I preferred the edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that was not illustrated by him.

A delightful children's book, one of Dahl's best. Just finished reading to my 4 and 6yo. They loved Sophie, the brave little girl who, along with the charming BFG, and with help from the Queen of England, save the children of the world from being gobbled up by gruesome giants! As soon as the book was finished my little girl asked me to start reading it again!

Roald Dahl is probably the only author I read more than once. This is how much I enjoyed him. The BFG was the first book I read by the author and I thought it was so different than any other children books that I had read until then. Actually, I think it was the first children book a truly liked. I reread it more than 10 times and I loved it more with every re-read.
