This is one of the novels that allowed me to better understand how the world works. I read it about ten years ago right after (?) seeing the film version. The film has faded, but the book remains vivid in my memory.
What the French experienced explains their approach to WW2. I recall my father telling me that after the Great War, France was not willing to experience that suffering again and that's why they buckled under Germany. He said that people needed to understand how the incredible horror of one experience impacted their reaction to the next. This novel makes that choice entirely understandable, at least to me.
The story is powerful and beautiful and terrible all at once. I believe I cried several times.
