Ovid in exile on the eastern shores of the Black Sea. I was sure I would like to read this, to see what he saw and to know what he knew. And to see it through the words of a great writer.
But it was not for me. Early on I remembered why I haven’t enjoyed David Malouf before. The concerns of his Ovid are too internal. He doesn’t show me First Century Romania, just his own musings and internal conflicts, with snide digs at Augustus.
I abandoned it at about page 30.
