An enjoyable, cozy reading experience with a rushed end. Would have loved a bit more on the magic system/usage and the extent of each doran's power. I will finish the series of course because I am a completionist.

Although I really liked this book as a stand alone, it leaves a bit to be desired as a prequel. In Wise Child (the sequel), we're introduced to a number of characters that one would expect the prequel to give us the back story on, but unfortunately it doesn't. One example would be Maeve the Fair. I did appreciate many of the other back stories, but I feel like there should have been another book between this one and Wise Child. Overall, and especially if read just by itself, this is a lovely YA book about good and evil, power and healing and claiming one's place. Strong female characters (well, maybe obviously) and good lessons about teachers and trust.

It's light teen fantasy. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

I loved this book and Wise Child as a kid and returned to reread now in adulthood. It still was a beautiful read. In makes me want to find the third book that I never knew existed and read it now as well.

I LOVE this series. And I don't usually particularly gravitate toward this sort of thing. It's almost a fantasy novel for people who don't like fantasy novels. Can't get enough.

Cute story although relatively short and clearly written for children/teenagers if you don't mind, and this makes sense considering the story is told from a child's point of view.

childish dialogues aside, I mostly enjoyed the delicate descriptions of particular crafts like dying cloths, and how the author conjures up specific and compelling images of rustic life (i.e. foraging/cooking/weaving) from another era.

I think I would've probably loved it as a child.

I love this book and its sequel, easily one of my most re-read books of all time.

This book brings back so many memories. It was given to me by a teacher. I was Wiccan at the time.

This book was much like its predecessor, "Wise Child," but with slight changes to allow for a different character in an earlier time and place. For all that, I really enjoyed the simple yet elegant writing and tight story. It was neat to see the parallels between Juniper's training experience and Wise Child's.

The Anglican writer Monica Furlong’s 1990’s historical fiction and fantasy novel, Juniper, is a prequel to Furlong’s 1987 book Wise Child. The book, Juniper is a more traditional fantasy novel than Wise Child. What is meant by Juniper being a more traditional fantasy novel than in the novel, Wise Child, is that in Wise Child the magic may have been all in Wise Child’s mind. In the novel Juniper, magic is definitely happening. The book, Juniper is about the childhood of Juniper. Many of the characters from the book, Wise Child and present in the book, Juniper. Juniper’s mentor, the traditional Celtic healer, Euny, and Wise Child’s father, Finbar are both characters in Juniper, along with Juniper herself. All these characters are younger versions of themselves than in Wise Child. Juniper in Juniper has a vision of her house in Wise Child. Christan church official suspicion of traditional Celtic healers does not really play a part in the plot of Juniper unlike in the plot of Wise Child. The plotline of Juniper is that Juniper is the daughter of King Mark of Cornwell, and Juniper must learn good magic to protect her father’s kingdom from wicked magic, which is coming from King Mark’s older sister, Meroot, who wants the throne of Cornwell. The novel, Juniper is a well-done prequel to the novel, Wise Child.

Een gekoesterde vriendin raadde me dit boek aan, omdat het haar zo geraakt had in haar jeugd. Toen ik in een tijdschrift van de kinderboekenweek las dat dit boek daarnaast bestempeld wordt als een jeugdklassieker, wist ik dat het tijd was om het een kans te geven. Klassiekers zijn ten slotte niet voor niets klassiekers. Deze klassieker is eigenlijk de prequel van "Het Heksenkind" een ander boek van Monica Furlong. Het vertelt over de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de heks Juniper. Hoe zij als kind opgroeide in een kasteel en dat kasteel verlaat om bij heks Euny in de leer te gaan.

Ik vond het boek wel goed, maar het deed minder met me dan gehoopt. Op een bepaalde manier is het boek toch redelijk oudbollig geschreven. Daarmee bedoel ik vooral dat alle eventen in het boek relatief opsommend worden verteld i.p.v. belevend, en dat alle emoties redelijk formeel worden benoemd zonder echt invoelend weergegeven te worden. Deze aspecten maakte het lezen van het boek nogal vlak. Het maakte ook dat het verhaal heel volwassen overkwam, minder als een kinderboek. De hoofdpersoon van het boek was kind, maar voelde niet als kind. Natuurlijk kunnen kinderen snel volwassen worden, maar het voelde een beetje gek om dit personage zo keurig te horen spreken en redelijk haar gevoelens te laten voelen. Waar is het gillen? Het weglopen? Eigenlijk miste ik het onredelijke kind. Zeker omdat de hoofdpersoon in het eerste hoofdstuk beschreven wordt als een enfant terrible, die anderen veroordeeld op vreemd zijn, veel kattenkwaad uithaalt en soms zelfs gemeen overkomt. Zodra ze bij de heks in de leer gaat, lijkt ze deze streken meteen afgeleerd te hebben.

Ik had persoonlijk ook veel moeite met de heks, Euny. Zij maakte zich eigenlijk openlijk schuldig aan kindermishandeling, namelijk verwaarlozing. Dat zij een jong kind liet verhongeren en verkleumen vond ik zelf erg heftig. Ook omdat hier misschien door het kind als onjuist gedrag naar wordt gekeken, maar niet door andere volwassenen in het verhaal wordt afgekeurd. Iedere keer als Euny weer op de pagina verscheen, was ik gefrustreerd.

Het verhaal was verder wel mooi. Het was goed te lezen en hield me bij de les, ook al was de vertelling dus een beetje droog. De locatie van het verhaal is buitengewoon. Ik was dol op de woeste omgeving van Cornwall. Juniper maakt ook vriendschappen met erg mooie mensen. De personages waren goed uitgewerkt.
