I was really impressed by Neruda's poetry, I always thought he only wrote about love, but this book showcases his beautiful writing and most thought provoking works. LOVED ITT

I am not a huge fan of poetry. No. This is not my thing. But Neruda is maybe one of few whose work I enjoy. I didn't read the whole book. The collection starts with selected poems from 100 Love Sonnets. After the first part, I felt that if I continue to read from his other collections, the magic of Neruda will be lost for me. And I want to carry his magic with me, because these selected poems from 100 Love Sonnets were pure magic.

This poetry is moving, thought provoking and most importantly has brilliant imagery.
The impressive diversity of topics is also a reason for Nerudas genius.
When you read Nerudas poetry you truly feel as if you have a front row seat to his pain, his joy, his passion, his soul.
I would very much recommend this book and any of Nerudas work.
As always Pinochet you murderous fascist rot in hell for taking aways such a brilliant mind aswell as so many others.

This is an interesting edition in that it has the original Spanish on one side of the page and the English translation on the other which allows the read to move from the original to the translation and vice-versa while reading.

Neruda's poetry is original and fresh. His imagery is redolent of his homeland, of Chile in all its wild glory. His subjects are varied, from love poetry to simple nostalgia for his homeland. The Spanish original is sonorous and musical, the English translation lucid and explanatory.

Well worth a read.

Words can never do justice to the sheer beauty that Neruda’s verse manages to extract out of a century too often debilitated by conflict. His poetry evaluates the Earth as an extension of his beloved’s corporeal self. The act of love-making acquires the metaphysical qualities of the farmer who impregnates the earth. Hence, Neruda’s passion becomes a conglomeration of his romance, patriotism, and socialism without becoming arcane to the populace. However, the punctum of his work lies in his immaculate use of symbolism to package the deepest internal struggles as a kinesthetic image in the natural order.
In a body of work that expands to five decades, Neruda is one of the most prolific poets of his time. Hence, it’s nearly impossible to study his oeuvre in entirety. This edition picks the choicest of his poems from his writing and presents them in chronological order. The beautiful presentation allows the reader to gauge the rising complexity of the verse as the 20th Century meanders from one conflict to another.
In Canto General(1950), my favorite section from the anthology, Neruda rewrites the entire history of Latin America from the perspective of the native. From glorifying the smallest nooks and crannies of the landscape to using surrealism to present larger-than-life sketches of the humblest of the dwellers, Neruda truly archives the destiny of an entire continent. Despite the communist paranoia and the accusations of assault on the poet, I would extend my strongest recommendation to everyone who can appreciate the beauty of the human experience.

everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

Oh my dear Neruda.

ODE TO THE STORM
Last night
she
came,
livid,
night-blue,
wine-red:
the tempest
with her
hair of water
, eyes of cold fire-
last night she wanted
to sleep on earth.
She came all of a sudden
newly unleashed
out of her furious planet,
her cavern in the sky;
she longed for sleep
and made her bed:
sweeping jungles and highways,
sweeping mountains,
washing ocean stones,
and then
as if they were feathers,
ravaging pine trees
to make her bed.
....

Tačiau pirmai pažinčiai labiausiai rekomenduoju rinkinį The Captain's Verses !

Nothing like a dual language book to give you a sense of the beauty of both English and Spanish. After reading various of his poems there is a line that comes back to me over and over again with a feeling of sweet depression: "Un sabor que tengo en el alma me deprime"

Such beautiful poetry. Accessible enough to make a non-poetry fan engaged, yet so swiftly and intricately written the poems have ceaseless interpretations. The language is so wistful yet precise, so perfectly parsed (and translated). Though Neruda was a misogynist, his poetic ability is undeniable. Shame he was that way.

An impressive collection. I must say that Pablo Neruda is probably the most notorious South American poet of all time. He evokes so many feelings. I highly recommend it to all who have an interest in poetry. For me, Pablo Neruda was, is and forever will be the most valuable our planet has ever had.
