I remember reading this at about ten years old and loving it so, so much. Tempted to go find them at the library and reread now, just for the nostalgia.
This is the first pirate book I have ever read and I enjoyed it very much. It is about Jack who is a pirate who tried to take a sack (that was stolen from him) from a ship where his best friend to be, Arabella was working as a barmaid for her father. It turned out that the sack he took was not his. He spoke to Arabella about the sheath of the sword of Cortés that was in the sack he had just taken. Arabella and Jack both wanted to find the sword of Cortés as it would give them unimaginable power. They use the Barnacle and are caught in a storm which takes them to an island where they find out that the sword was stolen by left foot Louis very recently. They still find all of the gold belonging to stone-eyed Sam underneath his bed. They are then chased by captain Torrents who had a storm following him but not feeling anything himself as he was cursed. Jack manages to shock Torrents with lightning and then they go away on the Barnacle with all their gold and silver to find left foot Louis.
3.5 stars. For a mass market Disney book designed to milk the pirates of the Caribbean franchise for all its worth, this was really fun. I love jack sparrow -sorry, captain jack sparrow :)- and I think the author did a good job getting his personality right. The writings good and the plot and characters motivations are pretty straight forward. They want the sword for its magic powers, so they can use it to set up they're owe little kingdom and keep it away from "evil" pirates who want to use it for themselves.
(Although jack and his friends pretty much want to do that exact same thing. Just nicer. -_- thats pirate logic for you.)
"The coming storm" sets up the overall plot for the series (getting the sword of Cortez before the evil Davy Jones can get his tentacles on it) while still doing well on its own. (Some beginning books can't figure out how to do the whole plot thing with the exposition and the rising action, climax, and the falling action. "The coming storm" does it. And well.) The characters are pretty good to. I like jack, fitz, and Bell. The others came in a bit late for me to decide if I like them yet.
This is a good choice for kids who like adventure stories and pirates. And of course for any fans of pirates of the Caribbean.
I read this entire series when I was a preteen or young teenager. I LOVED each and every one of these and I waited impatiently for each new installment. Being an avid Disney fan and the POTC ride in Disney World is my favorite, and the POTC movies were among my most-watched movies, I could not contain myself when my dad found these for me in the book store. Although I have not read them in years, I remember them fondly and I strongly recommend them to anyone who likes pirates, tie-in novels, or just exciting adventuress. I think these would be a hit for reluctant readers as well (even though I did not classify as a reluctant reader, these grab you quickly and are pretty easy to get into).
Choice book #2 Quarter 1 Jack sparrow by Rob Kidd is a adventure and fantasy book witch takes place in the Caribbean islands. The mane caricatures in the book are Jack sparrow a teen age stowaway that embarks on a journey with his friends Arabella a bar made for her father at the Faithful bride and, Fitzwilliam a sun of a wealthy family and runs away and joined jack on his adventure. Jack finds a sword sheath and from a pirate he robbed from and started a bar brawl gets yelled at by Arabella and they then go the beach in the next three days then Fitz finds them and they set of on a journey they face some challenges and meet new people on there journey. I rely liked this book because it feels like a complete book. It just is a grate book that you could just pick up and reed for fun. I wouldn't do any thing different with this book it was fan fantastic I cant wait to read the next books. this book just feels complete and over all just gives good vibes and its grate.
This book managed to be everything I didn't want it to be. The overall plot is simple and I liked that.. but the rest of this was just so tedious to read.
The author completely butchered the characterization of Jack Sparrow. One minute he's talking like a child, the next like a 30 year old man. The dialogue was choppy and the wording was awkward. Additionally, Jack wasn't even clever or funny in this book. He was just kind of there.
And the supporting characters were just as bland.
This is meant to be a prequel or back story for Jack Sparrow, but after reading this I still don't know much about his background.
This author also writes very poor fight scenes. When you read a pirate book, you want suspense and violence and adventure! This book had none of that. And that was why I disliked it so much.
