I have been a Bob Newhart fan for years. Loved The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart as well as numerous other shows and guest appearances. And of course he was great as Professor Proton on The Big Bang Theory and as Papa Elf in Elf. I found his book on my shelf and didn’t even remember having bought it. So when I was looking for a quick read I felt it was perfect. I was shocked and saddened when Bob Newhart passed away while I was reading his book.

It was a very enjoyable read. He offered many funny stories and even some of his more famous comedy routines. I found myself laughing out loud many a time. It was interesting to see how his career progressed and to find out he had the No.1 and No.2 albums at one time. I would definitely recommend reading this book to just about anyone.

Having grown up laughing with Bob Newhart, from the 60s records and through two series, this was a thoroughly enjoyable audiobook. Also, one degree of separation through a friend who is an actor, and I live in Chicago — these also contributed to my experience. I think hearing his voice in audio is the right way to experience this memoir.

Great book and I liked all the stories of his rise in comedy. I really liked learning that he is a grammy winner and I want to find those albums. As a fellow accounting worker I appreciated the early stories of his accounting work and could relate to spending an hour plus trying to figure out where that dollar and change is to balance an account. I recommend this book.

Bob Newhart? You think Sam is off his rocker, don't you? Bob is not in your top 10 when you think of comedians I know but give him a read or listen. Bob is a comedian who can take the mundane happenings of life and give you a chuckle.

Bob starred in two TV shows which I admit I was not a regular viewer. In the first show he plays a psychiatrist ( which is the better show of the 2) and the second he is a B&B owner in Vermont.

Bob does not use obscene language which makes him parent approved.

Check out his CD The Buttoned Down Mind. Two bits he does which had me laughing out loud. The Driving Instructor and the other he plays a PR rep for Abraham Lincoln.

They are fantastic.

Not really that funny

I found this autobiography more informative than funny.
After a late start in the business, Bob began with three dialogues printed in these pages. It must have been his delivery…because they just were not humorous. At least, however, for the most part, they were not offensive.
“The Bob Newhart Show” was apparently the acme of Bob’s career as he was surrounded by a talented cast.
Hi, Bob!

One thing I love about reading memoirs of famous people, is that I hear the author's voice in my head as I read. So with this book, it was as if Bob Newhart was telling me his life story, and weaving in some of his funniest stand-up routines. Bob Newhart is funny, and this book was funny. The only thing that would have made it better --if the narration in my head had Bob's comic timing.

What a great find! I listened to it on audiobook read by Newhart. Delightful with a capital D! Who knew he and Don Rickles are best friends. I can't imagine the book would be near the fun as listening to the monologue KING!

Part memoir, part comedy book, this slim volume concentrates its attention more on Newhart's early years as a stand-up comedian, extensively quoting some of the routines. It is funny in places, but Bob Newhart's true gift of comedy was in his delivery--without him saying the words, you have to imagine it and sometimes it falls flat.

I like Bob Newhart, I enjoy his TV shows and his genial personality...but this might be the most boring book I have ever read (actually I listened to it, read by Bob, and still it was boring)...but maybe it's boring in a charming way, I did in fact listen to all three CDs.

Entertaining Reminiscences from a Great Comedian

The late Bob Newhart was a comedic treasure, and his book “I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This” shows why he was such a great storyteller too. Full of amusing stories about his career and friends and struggles in show business, along with excerpts from his monologues and comedy albums, you get a sense of Bob’s humble humanity and low-key sense of humor. As someone who grew up watching his shows, it was nice to be able to enjoy Bob’s writing and relive some of the highlights of his career. He will be sorely missed by his fans, but he left behind a legacy of laughs that we can still enjoy.

I always liked Bob Newhart's humor when I was younger, so when I needed something light to read I chose this book and I am so glad I did. The old routines Newhart did years ago are just as funny when reading them now; his humor still holds up today as well as it did 50 years ago. While the book mainly sticks to his career as a comedian, Newhart does reveal a lot about himself as a man. I found it a great read and recommend it to anyone.
