This book and others by Feynman let me learn and give the highest importance to the fact that science and physics can only be practiced well if you have freedom of thought.
I recognize that few will purchase this, but it is the most incredible set of explanations of the basic principles of physics by the most infectiously charming and lucid teacher of it. It has a great conversational tone and is thereby quite readable. Feynman provides excellent examples and thorough explanation. He also gives his honest opinion (as always) to anything controversial. Just a great read if you are curious about such things.
I am using these big 3 volumes as a reference in most of my courses. It touches almost all branches in theoretical physics. His explanation, examples, approach, and insights is unmeasurably valuable!!
The disadvantages is that it is very brief, and it lacks the deep mathematical analysis of the subjects.
I highly recommend for any undergraduate physics student to have it always by your side!
The Feynman Lectures on Physics are a real treasure for physics students, or anyone interested in physics. He blends humor with wonderfully clear and original explanations of physical phenomena. He helps implant the concepts in your mind, so you don't get lost in math. I reread these books before my oral exam for my masters in physics, and it helped me answer one of the questions that I was asked. He has other good books for the general public.
What a wonderful teacher Dr. Feynman was. Often I would listen to recordings of his lectures. It did not matter whether they were at Cal Tech or Cornell they were amazing. If any of you have a chance to read them or listen to his lectures then please do so.
For my sixteenth birthday my father gifted a copy of the lectures to me and even though I never went became a theoretical physicist and somehow my Noble Prize got lost in the mail!!
