يكتب الفيزيائي الشهير (ريتشارد فاينمان) في هذا الكتاب فصولا متفرقة من حياته. بعضها شخصي جدا، وبعضها أكاديمي مهني.
بأسلوب جميل طريف، يبدأ من العنوان، وعِبرٌ قليلة متناثرة. أرى في بعضها فوائد فكرية.
الكتاب مسلٍّ، وفصوله قصيرة.
أجمل ما في حياة فاينمان كما صورها كتابه؛ مرحه وعفويته وحبه للمغامرة والتجريب.
وكانت أهم دروسه؛ حرصه على الفهم بالمثال، ونصائحه غير المباشرة في الفهم العميق، واستخدام الأدوات الخاصة لحل المشكلات التي تبدو معقدة أو مستحيلة.

كان فاينمان، فيما يظهر من مذكراته، رجلا يحب اللعب، ويهوى العبث، ويجد في ذلك طريقا للإبداع...وصل به إلى نوبل الفيزياء.

Desde su paso por el proyecto Manhattan hasta sus peripecias en Las Vegas entre bailarinas y mafiosos, un personaje que no deja indiferente a nadie.
Es un libro que te mantendrá con la sonrisa puesta, pero de aprender de física... más bien poco.

What a fascinating personality! To follow your dreams, make them happen, make a living out of them, ultimately all this work to be of help for others and above all to enjoy life as you wish to - this is what I call to live your life to the fullest!

Mr. Feynman stories are simply wonderful! They are not just funny - they present a man which desire to learn was his motto in life (he owes this desire to his father, a very remarkable man). According to him, anything can be learned as long as you wish for - so very true. If all pupils and students would have teachers like him, the world would be a much better place... I think the saying "like father, like son" emerged from their relationship. ;)

Some called him corky; others arrogant - and maybe he was. But who are we to judge? I don't think it was easy for him to work on the atomic bomb project - the pressure, the implications... even brilliant minds need a getaway of some form. Maybe when we'll do the things he did we'll get to have a word on this matter. Until then, lets just admire his passion, his dedication and his work.

The book does not contain scientific language, calculations or anything alike. Even if you're not interested in physics, this book is more than worth reading. Such a life experience not many can say they had...

One more thing: I came across on below interview, produced by BBC in 1981, called The Pleasure Of Finding Things Out. 50 minutes length, worth every second of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bgaw9... . It is a shorter version of his memoirs presented in the book and the following fragment is a part of it:

People say to me, “Are you looking for the ultimate laws of physics?” No I am not. I am just looking to find out more about the world. And if it turns out there is a simple ultimate law that explains everything so be it. That would be very nice discovery. If it turns out it’s like an onion with millions of layers and we just sick and tired of looking at the layers then that’s the way it is! But whatever way it comes out it’s nature, it’s there, and she’s going to come out the way she is.

Richard Feynman understood physics.

His reader, the cerebral and equally pulchritudinous, david, knows not a thing about physics. Okay, that is not true. “Things fall when you drop them,” I have observed, time and again. Therefore, I have an aptitude for science.

I can relate.

This guy won a Nobel Prize, hung with Einstein and Oppenheimer, and discovered and documented events that I do not feel like sharing, mostly because I cannot.

I, unlike Feynman, garnered a trophy in wrestling. An unusual one. I was one of the few kids on any high school grappling team to have viewed the ceilings of each tournament visited (that is not a good thing in this sport). And it was not by design, but by ambivalence. If at first, you do not succeed, no one really cares.

I did not know any scientists, but I did occasion ‘Feinstein & Schloppenheimer’s Deli.’ Ah, the pastrami on rye, you could just die, literally. And still, like every solid American who has learned not to enjoy anything ‘too much,’ I ripened into a vegan decades ago. Go figure. Please pass the Kombucha.

A very interesting story, this was. Feynman had his tale to tell and it was atypical. He was one of the architects in the development of the nuclear bomb and was an instructor and/or a student at MIT, Caltech, Cornell, and other top schools. His take on academia for a lifetime, with a IQ that could travel the autobahn but not I-80, makes for some funny moments.

He had the corny sense of humor you would expect from a full-time scientist. And much of it made for an enjoyable read, although I go deaf when it comes to jokes that include numbers.

So, in conclusion, I would like to thank the members of the Academy, my school teachers who assuaged my youth with ‘C’s rather than ‘F’s and the good people of the Seychelles.

I really enjoyed this book and learning about this man. Just the kind of guy one would love to have as a friend. Such curiosity. Such lack of pretension! Marvelously enjoyable book.

সেই যাদুকরের সাথে পরিচয় মিলল এই বইয়ে। রিচার্ড ফাইনম্যান একজন নোবেল বিজয়ী পদার্থবিদ বললে আসলে তার সম্পর্কে যেন কিছুই বলা হল না।
একজন পদার্থবিদ পরিচয়ের পাশাপাশি তার আরও অনেক পরিচয় বিদ্যমান।
ছোটবেলা থেকে তিনি রেডিও রিপেয়্যার করতে পারতেন। আগে ভাগে স্টেশন টিউন করে কাহিনী জেনে বন্ধুদের তাক লাগিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। একজন এমনও বলেছিল যে, This kid can repair radio just by thinking.
Los alamos এ তার লক ক্রাকিং এর কাহিনী তো সবারই জানা। তিনি একজন সফল চিত্রশিল্পী, ড্রামার, ক্রিপ্টোগ্রাফার।
পদার্থবিদ্যার পাশাপাশি তিনি বায়োলজি এর দিকে ঝুঁকেছিলেন এবং উল্লেখযোগ্য অবদানও রেখেছিলেন।
এত এত দিকে তিনি তার মেধা প্রয়োগ করেছিলেন যে, এই মুহুর্তে সবগুলো মনেও পড়ছে না।
বইটি পড়ার পর শুধু একটা কথাই মাথার মধ্যে ঘুরপাক খাচ্ছে, আশি বৎসরের আয়ুস্কালে একজন মানুষ এতকিছু কিভাবে করে।

The story of Feynman changed fundamentally, what I think about the world around me.
The story of Richard and his father helped me to understand, that many parents could help their children to a more fulfilling life. Parents could pique the interest of the child very early and could give him real answers if he asks why again and again.
He changed my view about scientists. He proved that the life of a scientist can be also “sexy” and interesting and the same time useful and deep activity. You rarely have a chance to meet pedagogues who can help you fall in love with learning and set the fire of science in you, as Feynman did.
This book is not only interesting for physicists and scientists, but also for parents and pedagogues who want to inspire their children, students to have a better life. Elon Musk (founder of Tesla) founded a school build on the same principles what Feynman confessed. Where children have a chance to understand the thing work around us, understand the “whys”, and continuously maintain the interest of the students.
Of course many people cannot afford this luxury. But also they can profit from these pedagogical principles, even if these seems to be terrifying at the first time as a parent. If you encourage your child to question anybody, you will be also questioned. If you encourage your child, not to defer to different orders, it questions basic societal values of many people and they can be stigmatized being unrespectful.
But I think, you will only show a path for your child, which even can lead to the Nobel-prize, but to a happier, more interesting life. And now I am surely not joking.

মাত্র পড়ে শেষ করলাম “Surely You’re joking Mr. Feynman!”। বইটি ফাইনম্যান তার বন্ধুকে বলা তার জীবনের মজার মজার সব স্মৃতিকথা আর চিন্তা-ভাবনা নিয়ে লেখা প্রায় চল্লিশটি লেখার সংকলন। ফাইনম্যানকে বইটি পড়ার আগে চিনতাম একজন নামকরা পদার্থবিদ হিসেবে। আর আটদশটা গুরুগম্ভীর পদার্থবিদ থেকে আলাদা করে দেখতাম না। বইটি যতই পড়তে থাকলাম, অবাক হয়ে দেখেছি, একজন মানুষের জীবন কিভাবে এত বৈচিত্রময় হতে পারে। তিনি শুধু একজন নোবেলবিজয়ী পদার্থবিদই ছিলেন না, শখের বসে ড্রাম বাজানো, ছবি আঁকা, সিন্ধুক-তালা এইসব কৌশলে খোলা হেন কাজ নেই যে উনি করেন নি। একজন নোবলবিজয়ী পদার্থবিদের চিন্তা-ভাবনা আর প্রাত্যহিক জীবনযাপনের ব্যাপারে ধারণা পেতে বইটির জুড়ি নেই। অনেক ছোটছোট বিষয়ে উনার অবসারভেশন মুগ্ধ করার মত। উনার জীবনের পাঁচটি ভাগকে পাঁচটি অধ্যায়ে ভাগ করে লেখা হয়েছে। পুরো বইটি ফাইনম্যানের দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে লেখা।

প্রথম অধ্যায়ে, ফাইনম্যানের ছোটবেলার থেকে এম.আই.টি তে আন্ডারগ্রেড করার সময় পর্যন্ত কিছু ঘটনা সুন্দর করে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে। ছোটবেলায় যেমন আমাদের মজার মজার অনেক শখ থাকে তেমন ইলেকট্রনিক্স নিয়ে ঘাটাঘাটি করা ছিল উনার প্রিয় একটি কাজ। শুধু মাত্র চিন্তা করে করে কিভাবে রেডিও ঠিক করেছিলেন তার খুব সুন্দর বর্ণনা দিয়েছেন এখানে। তার বেইসমেন্টের শিশুতোষ ল্যাবের মজার মজার ঘটনাগুলো বেশ সুখপাঠ্য। এম.আই.টি তে আন্ডারগ্রেড লাইফের খুব ভালো একটা ধারণা পাওয়া যায় উনার এম.আই.টি এর কাহিনীগুলো থেকে। ডর্মে থাকা, বান্ধবী খুঁজে বের করা, সিনিয়র-জুনিয়রদের সাথে বিভিন্ন বাঁদরামো আর পড়ালেখা বিষয়ক উনার সব কাহিনীগুলা আমাদের সবার আন্ডারগ্রেড লাইফের মতই মজার। একজন নোবেলবিজয়ী পদার্থবিদের নিসংকোচ বাঁদরামোর বর্ণনা পড়ে যে কারো হাসি পাবে নিশ্চিত।

দ্বিতীয় অধ্যায়ে ফাইনম্যানের প্রিন্সটনে পি.এইচ.ডি করার সময়কালের ঘটনাগুলো বলা হয়েছে। গণিতশাস্ত্রের, দর্শনের আর জীববিজ্ঞানের তার তখনকার বন্ধুদের সাথে ঘটনা আর বিষয়গুলো নিয়ে ঘাটাঘাটি করার বর্ণনা, সবার জন্য বেশ শিক্ষণীয়। প্রতিটা ব্যাপারে তার দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি, শেখার-ভাবার ধরণ যেকোনো শিক্ষার্থীর জন্য অনুসরণীয় দৃষ্টান্ত। শুধুমাত্র শেখার আগ্রহে এক সামারে উনি একটি জীববিজ্ঞান ল্যাবে কিছুদিন কাজ করেন। যা শেষপর্যন্ত ওয়াটসন (ডিএনএ আবিস্কারক) তাকে একটা সেমিনারে বক্তৃতা করার আমন্ত্রণ পর্যন্ত গিয়ে গড়ায়। ফাইনম্যানের নিজের পদার্থবিদ্যা বিষয়ক গবেষণার প্রথম প্রেজেন্টেশনে উপস্থিত ছিলেন আইনস্টাইন, অপেনহেইমারের মত বড় বড় সব বিজ্ঞানী। এই পরিস্থিতিতে একজন নবীন পি.এইচ.ডি স্টুডেন্ট এর মানসিক অবস্থার খুব সুন্দর বর্ণনা পাওয়া যাবে এই অধ্যায়ে।

বইটির গভীরে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে মজার পরিমাণও সমানুপাতে বাড়তে থাকে। তৃতীয় অধ্যায় ফাইনম্যানের এটমবোম্ব বানানোর সময়কার সব ঘটনা নিয়ে লেখা। আমেরিকা বিশ্বযুদ্ধের প্রস্ততি হিসেবে এটমবোম্ব বানানোর খুব তোড়জোড় শুরু করে। সারা দেশে থেকে বড় বড় সব বিজ্ঞানী লস-আলামস এ জড়ো করা হয় বিশ্বের প্রথম এটমবোম্ব বানানোর জন্য। ফাইনম্যান ছিলেন তাদের একজন। আমেরিকার এটমবোম্ব বানানোর পুরো ইতিহাসটা খুব সুন্দরভাবে ফুটে আসে এই অধ্যায়ে। সব বিজ্ঞানীদের একসাথ করা থেকে শুরু করে হিরোশিমা-নাগাসাকি তে হামলার আগ পর্যন্ত তিন বছরের সব ঘটনা জানা যাবে এখানে। লস-আলামস এর ভেতরকার ঘটনা, ওখানকার বিজ্ঞানীদের কাজকর্ম-ভাবনা আর এটমবোম্ব এর ব্যাপারে শুনার জন্য ফাইনম্যানের চেয়ে ভালো কোনো লোক খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবে না। এই পুরো অধ্যায়টা এক নিঃশ্বাসে পড়ে ফেলার মত।

প্রফেসর হিসেবে তার কর্নেল আর ক্যালটেকের সময়টুকু নিয়ে চতুর্থ অধ্যায়। একজন বড় বিজ্ঞানী হয়ে উঠা, ব্রাজিলের কার্নিভালে গিয়ে পারফর্ম করা, নোবল পাওয়া, খেয়ালের বসে ছবি আঁকা শুরু করে ছবি এঁকে পয়সা কামানো, ড্রাম বাজানো শেখা, নাটক করা, লাসভেগাসে বারে গিয়ে মেয়ে পটানো, স্ট্রিপক্লাবে বসে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের সমস্যা সমাধান করা সহ আরো অনেক রঙিন বৈচিত্রপূর্ণ ঘটনা খুব মজা করে উপস্থাপন করা হয়েছে এখানে। একটা লোক কি করে এত ধরনের কাজ করতে পারে তা ভাবতেই অবাক লাগে। ফাইনম্যান যে কোনো কিছু করলেই সেটা বেস্ট লেভেলে করার চেষ্টা করতেন। সব ব্যাপার খুব সূক্ষভাবে পর্যালোচনা করতেন, সেটা একাডেমিক হোক এর ভিন্নকিছু হোক সেটা তার কাছে ব্যাপার ছিল না।

শেষ অধ্যায় তার নোবেল পেয়ে খুব বিখ্যাত হওয়ার পরের ঘটনা নিয়ে। ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার শিক্ষাব্যবস্থা নিয়ে সরকারের সাথে তাঁর কাজের অভিজ্ঞতা, গবেষণা নিয়ে তাঁর ভাবনা, বিভিন্ন ইউনিভার্সিটি গিয়ে তাঁর বক্তৃতা দেয়ার কাহিনী একসাথ করা হয়েছে এখানে। খুব বড় একজন বিজ্ঞানীর পুরো জীবনের স্মৃতিকথা নিয়ে লেখা বইটি সবার অবশ্যপাঠ্য। বইটির হাস্যরস এককথায় অতুলনীয়। চমত্কার সব কাহিনী, বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত সব আলোচনা, সুন্দর আকর্ষনীয় বিজ্ঞান এত সুন্দর সাবলীল ভাষায় আর কোথাও পড়েছি বলে মনে পড়ে না। সবাই বইটি পড়বেন এই আশা রইলো। আর ফাইনম্যানের মত আরো হাজার হাজার এমন Fine -Man পৃথিবীতে জন্মগ্রহণ করুক, এই কামনা থাকলো। মানবসভ্যতার অগ্রযাত্রায় এরাই যে আমাদের কান্ডারী।
