Kami and the Yaks

Just before the start of a new trek, a Sherpa family discovers that their yaks are missing. Young Kami, anxious to help his brother and father maintain their livelihood, sets off by himself to find the wandering herd. A spunky deaf child who is unable to speak, Kami attempts to summon the yaks with his shrill whistle. Failing to rout them, he hustles up the steep mountainside to search the yaks' favorite grazing spots. On the way he encounters the rumblings of a fierce storm which quickly becomes more threatening. Surmounting his fear of being alone in the midst of treacherous lightning and hail, Kami uses his heightened sense of observation to finally locate the yaks. Reunited with their animals, the astonished family is once again able to transport their gear and guide the mountain climbers into the majestic terrain.

High in a land where winds blow snow clouds off tall mountain peaks, Kami stepped out into the early morning dark. He sniffed the moistness.

The deaf culture references were very limited. I liked the bit of adventure included, but this is not a must-read. The illustrations are very well done and kept my attention.

This book was unlike anything that I had ever read before. The book was long, the illustrations were beautiful, and the plot was quirky.

A family's 4 yaks go missing before a major storm and Kami is left behind because his father and brother don't believe he can help due to his own "limitations." It is a touching story of how someone with limitations can overcome everyone's expectations.

4.25 stars This book was the feel good moment I needed today! Maybe I have a soft spot for those with disabilities or a good Sherpa story but I enjoyed this book enough to put in on my recommended shelf! I love authors notes at the back and that brought more clarification to the story! Smile to my face!
