Something about these books just captures adolescent friendship unlike anything else. It isn’t edgy or thought provoking or particularly brilliant, but it brings back waves of nostalgia so intense you almost drown in them (clearly I’ve been reading a lot of Brashares’ metaphors lol).

This didn’t quite hit the same way the first one did - it’s not quite as fun or fresh - but had some real moments of authenticity. A damn fun escape.

I loved this book in my twenties. I love this book now. I can still remember the first time I read it, and every time I go back and re-read (especially all the quotes I've marked) it's like coming back to an old friend.

“back then was exactly the same as now. to brave the undertow, we had learned to hold hands.” NO IM NOT CRYING YOURE CRYING!!!!! i love this book. i love carmen’s plot and i love tibby helping christina through labor and i love EVERY MOMENT of the bridget/eric reunion. when i think about love, i think about a hot boy breaking into an infirmary and stealing medicine for me while i’m lying in bed sick. WHAT SAYS LOVE MORE THAN THAT!

Maybe 4.5 stars?

I think this is my favorite book of the series so far. It's hard to tell because the first book packs such a hard punch right off the bat. But I didn't realize how little I liked book 2 until book 3 walked in and brought back that intensity! It's made more powerful because of all the history I now have with these girls and their lives.

I still just don't enjoy the format of this book, and I keep getting stuck on that. But I feel like the writing has vastly improved since book 1. I'm seeing more of the character actions and reactions instead of just being told how they felt off page.

“You couldn't erase the past. You couldn't even change it. But sometimes life offered you the opportunity to put it right.”

I do not like young adult books much anymore, especially contemporary young adult, and especially young adult contemporary coming of age stories with romance (whew, that was a mouthful). And The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants series is all of those things. And somehow I really enjoy it. Girls in Pants is the 3rd book in the series, and so far my favorite one. I lost some faith in the book 2 (I didn't like it much), but book 3 came back and definitely brought it home for me.

“She was still waiting for him to come back to her, even though he wasn't going to. She was still holding out for something that wasn't going to happen. She was good at waiting. That seemed like a sad thing to be good at.”

If I was a teenager reading these books right now - they would be my holy grail of books. I can say that with a 100 percent certainty. But as I am not a teenager anymore, I just appreciate these books for what they are - a really good, proper young adult coming of age story. Young Adult genre, while skyrocketing in popularity over the last couple of years, definitely went downhill in quality of its content. A lot of ya contemporaries are very mainstream, "hip" (or whatever they are trying to be) and just not generally good (in my humble opinion).

The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants is a classic of coming of age stories - it's relatable, it's real and it's very raw. Nobody in these books is perfect - adults or teens - both are flawed, both are guilty of doing wrong things. And I really love that. Nowadays it's teens vs parents, or parents are very often absent (I guess we have Disney to thank for a trend of "poor unfortunate orphans" that always somehow save the day.

“Why does he have to be my boyfriend? Are you inferior if you don't have a boyfriend? Why does everybody have to be in love with somebody?”

Girls in Pants is far from perfect, not just character wise, but plot wise too. I admit that it is too easy, too convenient, too happy even. But I (ever the critic of cliches and tropes) somehow am okay with it. There was plenty of heavy emotions to offset the cheesy- it was a pretty good balance. Being on a third book in this journey my only fear right now is for the series not to become horrible with the last books, because oh that is definitely a possibility. But, fingers crossed.

I always try to say who was my favorite in each book, and I always gravitate towards Lena - I just really love her. And her story arc in this book was so, so good. And happy to say that I finally didn't hate Carmen or Tibby - both definitely evaluated themselves as characters in my eyes. Bee is always a solid number 2 for me, I love Bee.

“Sometimes when she thought of Eric, and now more powerfully when she saw him, she felt some achy nostalgia for her old self. For the dauntless, daring soul she used to be. There were certain qualities you possessed carelessly. And you couldn't retrieve them when they were gone.”

This book surprised me a little bit. I mean I didn't hate the second book. Not really. But it just made me feel like this shouldn't have been turned into a series. I mean it was cute and adorable, but it was just... I'm not sure how to explain it exactly. I did like it though. And I did enjoy reading it very much.

There are some parts that were rather hastily put in that should have been discussed a little more for context. There were other parts that I didn't understand were included at all. Mostly the former than the latter.

All in all, it was a cute book. I can tell you honestly that it is directed more at the younger audience that it is aimed for. And that's okay. I have been enjoying the book and I will finish reading the series.

Me ha gustado muchísimo este libro, el último verano antes de ir a la universidad; me ha gustado ver su crecimiento y como a pesar de ser tan diferentes son tan buenas amigas. Esta vez la historia me pareció menos triste y mucho más tierno.

Loved rereading this book! This is about the summer before college and we see Bridget, Tibby, Lena and Carmen grow up a lot and figure out what they want. Loved, loved, loved :)

Okay I actually loved this one. They are so fun, easy listens. Makes me miss my own sisterhood of the traveling pants dance friends.

From the goodreads blurb:
"We’re facing our last summer together. In September we go to college. And it’s not like one of those TV shows where all of us magically turn up at the same college. We’re going to four different colleges in four different cities (but all within four hours of one another—that was our one rule). We’re headed off to start our real lives."
This is the first book I have read in this series. It is about 4 girls who are friends throughout high school. This book takes place their last summer together before college.

I found myself liking this book. It was written in an easy to read and understand format. There was not a lot of language and just a few questionable situations. I started the book and could not put it down. Having started at 8:30 PM and ended at 12:00 AM reading, I found myself having read it straight through. Each chapter was narrated by each of the girls and really showed what the summer was like for them.

This caused one of the problems for me though. There was no lines or scene closings. The book would be about Carmen or Bee or etc. and then it would switch to Tibby's or etc... This was very disconcerting and would knock me out of the story. That was very disappointing.

Second was what kind of camp did Bee go to? I have never heard of a camp that would assign just one girl counselor and one boy counselor together for activities (that maybe no camper wants to attend) or assigns them to take a group of (9 - 13 year old) boys or girls camping and only provides one two person tent for these same counselors to share? This is just a law suit waiting to happen. I would have been extremely upset to send a child to such a camp. I would have also been upset to learn that these same two counselors were in each others cabins and beds in just their underwear. True one was sick and nothing happened, but it is the appearance and responsibilities.

Third is what happened to the "Pants"? The Pants had a very minor role in this book and the focus was solely on the girls. I wanted to learn more about the pants and how they affected the summer.

2020 reread: 4 stars. There were still parts that made me do a double take (not in a good way) but this book showed the most growth for all 4 girls and there was something especially poignant about this last summer before they all go to college.

Original 2006 read: 5 stars
