i always find myself reading these every winter. they are definately high school girl books, but i find the honesty in the characters intriguing. i find the girls empowering. plus, the setting is summer and when it's 20 below outside there's nothing better than pretending you're in the heat of mexico and italy...or just working at your summer job.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was the first novel I ever read that made me cry. The friendships described in the book made me want to have those type of relationships later in life.
I picked up all four of these books and blasted through them in about a day. I decided to read them so I could talk about them with my 15-year-old sister. They were a fun, quick read. I liked that the book had action and consequences from real-life situations, and that the four girls in the book had to grapple with their own shortcomings and insecurities. Yes, there's lots of teenage drama and some fun love interests sprinkled throughout, but the real charm of these books is the self-discovery done by each girl.
Ann Brashares does a wonderful job writing Sister Hood of the Traveling Pants. I think that this book is an easy read and is really relatable to teenage girls. Although it is a good read, some of the stories told in the book are not intriguing. tSister Hood of the Traveling Pants is about four sixteen year old best friends who spend their first summer away from each other. The girls all go to different places: Lena travels to Greece; Carmen goes to South Carolina; Bridget goes to Mexico; and Tibby stays home. They stay in touch by writing letters and sending the pants which they found at second hand shop that magically fit every one of them. Lena goes to Greece to visit family. Carmen’s story is about her going to visit her dad for the summer because her parents are divorced. Bridget goes to a soccer camp (Spoiler Alert!), but ends up falling in love with one of the counselors who is 20 years old and highly forbidden. Tibby stays home and works at Wallman’s all summer and creates a documentary on people with a little help from her 12 year old friend Bailey. The overall theme of this book was friendship and self-acceptance. Before the girls all left for vacation they made rules for the pants and the last one was “Remember: Pants=love. Love your pals. Love yourself.” tIn my opinion, my favorite story was Bridget. You never knew what crazy thing she was going to next. I think her story appealed to me because she’s outgoing and plays soccer like I do. The most boring story I think was Tibby’s but without her story, the book would not be complete. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and think that all teenage girls should consider reading this book.
