A solid investment for someone wanting to sample some of King's earlier novels.

The Shining was definitely my favorite of the three, though all represent what I have come to think of as Classic King.

ive read just about all of his work. great imagination. always a twist. in the gut that is.

Have read this book over and over again. Loved it the first time loved it the tenth. Its a ghost story with out all the supernatural stuff that others use. Well written and grabs you straight away. You can almost imagine being in the big house all alone and the corseway blocked.

n  Carrien: I knew the basics about Carrie from what I've heard of the movie. I have not watched the film yet; I wanted to read the novel first. When I began reading Carrie, it had sentences in brackets to explain what was going through Carrie's (and other characters') minds. These "thought" sentences were the only parts of the book that took me a while to get used to. To say that Carrie frightened me was an understatement. In the most straightforward sense, Carrie is quite relatable. The novel demonstrates the cruelty of people and their lack of remorse. Not every person has these qualities, but enough do. Bullying is a big problem and Carrie shows the extreme of its outcome. Stephen King definitely creeped me out with Carrie, so much so that I took a break before continuing to read Salem's Lot. My rating for Carrie is a 4/5.

n  Salem's Lotn: Salem's Lot took a while to get good. The story is broken up into three parts (with an epilogue at the end). The first part was rather tedious because it introduces the reader to characters who are forgotten almost instantly. The second part begins to flesh out the true motives of the novel while the third part reveals the climax. The story does well to keep a sense of foreboding and evil. Although not overtly frightening, King's words easily paint a picture in the mind's eye. If the first part of Salem's Lot had been a tad shorter, or less peppered with rather irrelevant characters, than the rating would have been a 4/5. However, my rating for Salem's Lot is 3/5.

n  The Shiningn: The best phrase for this story would be chillingly eerie. Perhaps eerie bordering on downright terrifying. I'm not ashamed to say that The Shining gave me nightmares within reading a few chapters. Not many books have the ability to do that to me. I know a movie adaptation was made but I don't think I'll ever work up the courage to watch it after having read the book. I had to put the book down multiple times out of sheer fright. When I read Danny and Jack's experience in Room 217 I became increasingly uncomfortable walking into any bathroom with a bathtub. Good job scaring the crap out of me, King. I commend your ability to craft a chilling tale all while keeping the reader eager for the next turn of events. The Shining has become my favourite King novel, even if it scared the bejeezus out of me. While I'm wary about the forthcoming sequel, I'm excited to see how it plays out. My rating for The Shining is a 5/5.

It was my first King novels and I fell in love with his work. Carrie was so intriguing and fascinating to me, it was a great start. Salem's Lot and The Shining are such good novels, I couldn't put it down.Plus, the book cover is so beautiful.

Classic horror that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up on more than one late night reading session.

Stephen King's writing is a combination of three things:

Horrible, crippling boredom. King's prose is leaden, there isn't a single scene or line of dialogue that flows naturally or moves at a crisp pace. He focuses on unnecessary details, pointless side characters, endless internal monologuing, irrelevant history, useless digressions, and annoying chatter. The supposedly spooky threats he invents are laughable, rather than scary (the worst offender is the possessed topiary of The Shining, which represent a sub-Goosebumps-level menace). King very transparently tries to gin up a cheap emotional response using gimmicks like constant racial or sexual epithets, child abuse, et al, but only the most easily-manipulated reader would fall for it.

Sexual perversion. King was apparently born as a creepy middle-aged man and weird, unnecessary sexual details ooze into every thought his characters have or that the narration describes. Carrie was saturated with leering descriptions of teenage girls' bodies and obsessive discussion of periods (which is written as if blood gushes out like a waterfall, King clearly failed sex education). The Shining is replete with references to repressed homosexuality and repeated scenes of a little boy urinating on himself. Salem's Lot has multiple rape threats and endless general horny references. All of the books drop multiple unnecessary, non-sequitur references to masturbation, child molestation, lusty descriptions of women in non-sexual contexts, allusions to rape or actual rape, references to pissing oneself (that one's clearly a fetish of King's), references to crapping oneself, characters perpetually feeling their emotions in their balls or anus, and descriptions of people inevitably reference sex or genitals in some manner.

A hatred of the human race. King very clearly has a negative view of humanity and it bleeds out into every aspect of his writing. All of the characters in King's books are awful to some degree, variously molesters, abusers, alcoholics, racists, murderers, lunatics, liars, religious zealots, cowards, bullies, hypocrites, thieves, bigots, and a cavalcade of other thoroughly unlikable, unsympathetic, largely uninteresting types of bastards. "Well, he's a horror writer blah blah blah," isn't an excuse. Horror requires you to feel something positive for somebody in the allegedly horrifying situation, otherwise why should the reader care what happens to them?

It baffles me that a dull, perverted misanthrope has enjoyed such wide popularity, but I suppose that mainstream taste always trends toward garbage.

I think this collection of Stephen King stories have stood up against the test of time. Carrie, Salem’s Lot, and The Shining are 3 of his best works. Reading this collection of stories takes you on a relatable ride through horror from familiar heights that are quite frightening. Stephen King found a healthy blend between horror and reality and he does not disappoint. Definitely a MUST read!

Review if for the Shining as I read the first two portions some time ago (and both were good!).

Shining had strong characters (particularly Danny and Jack Torrance and Dick Hallorann) that I actually felt invested in. I have joked many times with family that Stephen King is the best writer around, but can't seem to finish a book for the life of him, the ending here is nice.

I wish I had not seen the movie first (years and years ago), as I was expecting some of the scares from the movie to appear here (and they don't).

Overall another strong King book that I really enjoyed, would recommend and now I am looking forward to reading Doctor Sleep sometime before I see that movie!

Η Κέρι έχει περίοδο και έχει και τα νεύρα της. Ουαί και αλίμονο, αλί και τρισαλί (βαβαί παπαί ιαταταί κ.λπ.) σε όποιον βρεθεί στο δρόμο της (και των τηλεκινητικών της ικανοτήτων). Μακριά από το δόγμα "η μεγάλη δύναμη συνεπάγεται και μεγάλη ευθύνη" του θρυλικού ανθρώπου-αράχνη (όχι του Παναγιώτη Φασούλα, του Πήτερ Πάρκερ), η Κάρι χρησιμοποιεί τη δύναμή της για εκδίκηση.
Το βράδυ του χορού του σχολείου, η κλασική κακιασμένη λυκειακή γκόμενα (με εξίσου κλασικό εξοσχολικό αλήτη γκόμενο) ρίχνει δυο κουβάδες με αίμα γουρουνιού στο κεφάλι της Κάρι και του συνοδού της και "τα περιττώματα χτυπάνε τον ανεμιστήρα" όπως λένε και οι αγγλοσάξωνες. Η εκδίκηση της Κάρι, της μικρής ντροπαλής Κάρι, θα είναι τρομερή. Ακόμη και η (χρήζουσα εγκλεισμού και ψυχιατρικής παρακολούθησης/αγωγής) υπερβολικά εμφατικά θεούσα μητέρα της Κάρι βιώνει τις συνέπειες του ξεσπάσματος. Όσο για εκείνους που τόλμησαν να γελάσουν...
Ένα πολύ μέτριο μυθιστόρημα με μερικά χαριτωμένα τεχνάσματα στην αφήγηση που ξεκινάει με σοκ (η περίοδος της Κάρι μπροστά σε όλα τα άλλα κορίτσια στο ντους) και τελειώνει με εκρήξεις, ηλεκτροπληξίες και τηλεκινητικά προκεκλημένες μητροκτονικές καρδιακές ανακοπές.
Σίγουρα τη δεκαετία του '70 οι αναφορές στη γυναικεία περίοδο δεν ήταν συχνές, αλλά αυτό δεν είναι λόγος να μνημονεύεται ακόμα αυτό το πολύ μέτριο έργο. Από την άλλη, ο ανταγωνισμός ήταν ανύπαρκτος τότε, για τον αναδυόμενο King...


Salem's Lot ⭐⭐

Το εξαιρετικά φλύαρο στο ξεκίνημά του βιβλίο αργεί ΠΟΛΥ να πάρει μπρος, σε σημείο που θεωρείς ότι ο Κινγκ έχει μείνει από βενζίνη. Στη συνέχεια προσφέρει μια-δυο καλές σκηνές ανατριχίλας (από αυτές που σε κάνουν να θέλεις να ανοίξεις ένα ακόμα φως στο δωμάτιο που διαβάζεις) και στο τέλος... δεν τελειώνει, περισσότερο "ξεφουσκώνει".

Δεν είναι ότι αποστρέφομαι τις ιστορίες με βρικόλακες, αλλά περίμενα κάτι περισσότερο από τον "μετρ του τρόμου". Ιστορία με βρικόλακες έγραψε και ο Μάρτιν στο Fevre Dream και είναι αριστούργημα από τα λίγα.
Το άλλο ζητούμενο είναι η απίστευτη φλυαρία του Κινγκ. Δεν ξέρω αν προσπαθεί να μπάσει τον αναγνώστη στο κλίμα, αλλά προσφέρει τέτοιο πακτωλό άχρηστης πληροφορίας που κουράζει. Τα σημεία στα οποία ξεδιπλώνει το ταλέντο του και σε κάνει να θέλεις να αλλάξεις βρακάκι δεν αρκούν για να ξεπληρώσουν τον αναγνώστη για όλη τη βαρεμάρα και το "study in triviality" που υφίσταται για σελίδες επί σελίδων (γνώμη μου).



The Shining ⭐⭐⭐


Αντί κριτικής, περίγλειψη (κοινώς ατέσιο, ζμπόιλερ! -το μπόιλερ ανατινάζεται!):

Ο συγγραφέας Τζακ Τόρανς προσπαθεί να τελειώσει ένα βιβλίο, οπότε (τι πιο σύνηθες) δέχεται δουλειά επιστάτη σε ένα ξενοδοχείο με το εξαιρετικά καθησυχαστικό όνομα Overlook (παράλειψη) στου «βοδιουτομπούτσο». Μυρίζει «παράνοια των απομακρυσμένων τοπίων» πριν καν σαλιώσεις δάχτυλο για να γυρίσεις σελίδα. Επειδή δεν έχουμε αρκετά στερεότυπα, ο Τζακ είναι αλκοολικός και βίαιος. Η γυναίκα του παραλίγο να τον χωρίσει και να φύγει με το γιο τους, επειδή ακόμη δεν έχει συμπληρωθεί ο αριθμός στερεοτύπων. Ο γιος του ο Ντάνι είναι προβληματικός και ψυχολαλά, σα να μην έφτανε που έχει τον πατέρα που έχει και, τις ψυχολαλά ικανότητές του, ο μάγειρας της Παράλειψης (ελπίζω να μην παραλείπει και τις τηγανητές πατάτες δίπλα από τη μπριζόλα) τις αποκαλεί Shining, οπότε τώρα ξέρετε από που βγήκε το όνομα του βιβλίου. Φυσικά ο Ντάνι έχει την πιο δυνατή λάμψη που έχει δει ποτέ ο μάγειρας. Και αν δεν μπορείς να εμπιστευτείς ένα μάγειρα σε τέτοια θέματα, κακώς τρως το φαγητό του. Μέσα στις ικανότητες του Ντάνι είναι να βλέπει μια εκδοχή του εαυτού του από το μέλλον που προσπαθεί να τον προειδοποιεί για το μπάχαλο, τη βία και τη σκατοθύελλα που έρχεται (αν μόνο είχα ένα τέτοιο τύπο πριν παντρευτώ!)

Επειδή είναι βιβλίο του Κινγκ, με το που σκάνε η φαμίλια Τόρανς στο ξενοδοχείο, αρχίζουν τα ντράβαλα και προφανώς το ξενοδοχείο είναι περισσότερο λεύκωμα παρελθούσης βίας (δολοφονίες, αυτοκτονίες, μαφίες, κόσμος ποτ πατάει στα σφουγγαρισμένα, αυτοί που τρώνε το τελευταίο μελομακάρονο ή το τελευταίο κομμάτι πίτσας και άλλα τέτοια αίσχη) παρά περιστασιοκό κατάλυμα και προσπαθεί (ναι, το ξενοδοχείο) να κάνει το Ντάνι το πουτανάκι του καθώς τα οράματα που έχει ο μικρός γίνονται όλο και πιο απτά (στα όρια της παραίσθησης από μεσκαλίνα με κομπρέσορα), αλλά στο τέλος το ξενοδοχείο θα «καταλάβει» το Τζακ. Και όταν λέω καταλάβει, δεν εννοώ ότι τον συμπονεί και αντιλαμβάνεται τις αιτίες της βίας και του αλκοολισμού του, αλλά μπαίνει μέσα του και τον κάνει μαριονέτα παραλογισμού και βίας, όσο ο γιος του κάνει υπεραστικές ψυχικές κλήσεις με κόσμο που είναι σε αεροπλάνα (χωρίς χρέωση). Όσο ο γιος τσακίζει τις τηλεφωνικές εταιρίες με τα ψυχοτηλεφωνήματά του, ο Τζακ πίνει το Βόσπορο ή το Τάμπα Μπέι ή τον κόλπο του Μεξικού, ό,τι προτιμάτε και φυσικά η πρώτη του αντίδραση μετά το λιωμίδι είναι προσπαθήσει να σκοτώσει τη γυναίκα του και το παιδί του, τι πιο φυσικό Νίκο Ευαγγελάτε. Οι δύο τελευταίοι (όχι το αγόρι της Τατιάνας, η γυναίκα και το παιδί) έκτοτε κρύβονται για να μπορεί να κάνει μια καλή σκηνή, αξιομνημόνευτη, ο Κιούμπρικ.

Ο Τζακ τα κάνει γυαλιά καρφιά και στο τέλος πραγματώνει το όνειρο του κάθε επιστάτη, ανατινάζει το ξενοδοχείο παίζοντας με το λέβητα του καλοριφέρ (έχει γίνει και σε ελληνικό σχολείο, αλλά δυστυχώς είχε θύματα παιδιά).

Στο τέλος ο Ντάνι αποφασίζει ότι δουλειά του είναι να αγαπάει τη μαμά του. Ο χρήστης Οιδίποδας νιώθει δικαιωμένος στην τοποθεσία Θήβα.

Αρχετυπικό θρίλερ που δείχνει πλέον τα χρόνια του, αλλά διαβάζεται ακόμα ευχάριστα, οφείλει μεγάλο μέρος της αναγνωρισιμότητάς τους και στην ταινία του Κιούμπρικ και σίγουρα δεν είναι ό,τι χειρότερο έχει γράψει ο Στίφε Κινκ.

Carrie was really good. Salem's lot I honestly couldn't even finish. The Shining was not what I expected. I don't know if it's just me, but it's hard for me to get into King's form of writing.
