I don't know what rating to give this, since I only loved one of the books. The Shining was by far the best one out of the three. The other two were kind of forgettable, which I thought was odd. A Stephen King novel forgettable? What? Yeah, it's true. Carrie was interesting enough to get me to finish it, but not enough for me to want to read it again. 'Salem's Lot was...bland. I started reading it with so much excitement, since at the time, I was obsessed with vampires. But I found myself reading faster towards the end just so I could be done reading it.
What can you say about Stephen King? The master of horror brings three different stories, three different kinds of stories. One of the amazing things about these classics, like all of this author's work, every time you reread one, you get something new.
All three stories are good stories. The Shining is probably the best. The characters are well developed and the evil drips off the page. This is classic Stephen King. Salem's Lot is a great vampire story. The male lead is especially well developed. I sympathize with Father Callahan and I felt an admiration for the young boy. I could not put the book down. I liked the Carrie story but I do not like the style of this particular work. In my opinion this was the weakest of the three stories contained in this book.
This book I picked up for like 10 bucks and then when I read it I couldn't stop Stephen king is a genius great novels to bundle to show the novice readers what his stories are like
Three of my favourite Stephen King novels in one amazing book.
Review: Carrie
This book is an amazing analysis of religious trauma, abuse/bullying, othering, and the effects of demeaning those labeled as different. Carrie is such a fantastic character, with the development found from both her social growth (or lack there of), and her power growth. Her isolation and almost infantilized lifestyle from her mother is truly terrifying. Wonderful for anyone who enjoys psychic horror.
Review: Salem's Lot
I love vampire novels, and this one is definitely close to the top of my list.
Ben Mears returns to his home town to write about the local haunted house, but old terrors have been replaced by new monsters as he finds the house now occupied. Neighbours are disappearing and turning up bloodthirsty monsters and the horrors continue.
Perfect for fans of Anne Rice and paranormal horror. . . But don't read at night!
Review: The Shining
I love the movie for this book, so finally reading it was an experience in both nostalgia, and new-found love.
Jack Torrence applies to be the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel during the winter, bringing his wife and young son to this remote and desolate building. Terror sets in as the ghosts of the house take a special interest in both himself and his son Danny. This is a spectacular blend of paranormal and psychological horror, as the ghosts slowly tear apart Jack's mind and he becomes a more twisted and deranged version of himself.
As a three in one, this is a perfect collection. It covers three of the more highly acclaimed King novels, and is perfect for any horror fan.
This was my first horror book I ever read and it was awesome! It was a bit wordy at times but nevertheless, I was hooked with every word. This book is so much better than the movie
