This book was originally written in 1971 and now has new illustrations since 1990. I love this story of the animals losing their stripes, etc from the elephant laughing and sneezing!
The elephant, of course, is going to sneeze. (Actually, there are youtube videos of elephants sneezing and not much happens because of it, but realism isn't the point, now is it?) So he warns everybody, and they start giving these long (long! don't read this book to a kiddo with a short attention span!) pleas, reminding him of the disaster that struck the LAST time he sneezed - the bear went bare, and all the hippopotamuseses fell on their bottomuseses, the feathers fell off the birds and the flowers off the trees.... Well! It was not a pretty picture.
But the poor elephant is undeterred. He MUST sneeze. He WILL sneeze... until he doesn't.
And this is so surprising he starts to laugh, and, well...
maybe he should have sneezed instead, that's all I can say.
Repetition in this story is engaging for kids and encourages their participation when read aloud. The variety of characters lends to expressive reading and humor. Kids love sharing what they already know about animals and even making some predictions based on this. It's a good lead in to conversations about how to communicate when you don't like something and the value of "please".
A rhyming book about animals begging an elephant not to sneeze because of the bad consequences that happen to them when that happens. When a mouse scares the elephant and keeps him from sneezing, the elephant starts to laugh, and all the feared destruction happens anyway.
Another super cute children’s poem book written and published in 1971. This book reads very much like a Dr. Suess book, which I absolutely love. It’s the only kind of poems I even understand. It was in with my cousin’s (Lancer Woolwine) family photos, which I am currently organizing for their family. This book, missing its cover, stays with the family.
This is a cute story and the kindergarten classes I read it to enjoyed it, but I felt it was a bit too long for a few of the classes. If I could I would re-write the last page-the end tends to fall flat after the fun on the other pages.
"Stand Back," Said The Elephant, "I'm Going To Sneeze!" was a great book. This book can be used in a lesson about rhyming words. The children can write the ryhming words they or clap when they hear them. Writing the words on the board as they are found and later finding the ending that makes them ryhme is another hands on idea. I believe it is an attention getter and the children will love a chance to be involved in the lesson.
The elephant tries to warn everyone that he is about to sneeze. We follow what happens to the rest of the animals when the elephant sneezes. Just as he is about to sneeze the little mouse yells “BOO!” to scare the elephant in order to make him forget about sneezing. The little mouse’s plan works but as he explains his reasoning for his actions; the elephant starts laughing so hard that he falls on his back. The elephant laughing too hard sends the other animals into havoc as if they would if the elephant had sneezed. This book is told in poem form and is told wonderfully. The illustrations show immense emotion and detail. This picture book is intended for ages three to six. I find this accurate because the material is incredible simple and may bore a child any older than six years old.
