This is not a pick-me-up story. The Partner read to me like a tragedy. Patrick Lanagan accomplished an incredible triumph over his enemies, over the government, and over the legal system. He masterfully faked his own death and disappeared with ninety million dollars. When he was caught, he had a plan that roiled them all. But for all his scheming, he only wins despair and loneliness.

If you enjoy courtroom intrigue and legal drama, I think you’ll find this book an engaging and fast-paced thriller. Much of the action is in the legal realm. There are many chapters of lawyers and judges in discourse and verbal conflict, many pages of scheming and explanation. But the book is excellently written with an important theme.

After reading several pretty heavy books about India and the Muslims, I needed a good, old-fashioned thriller. Grisham was what I was craving. This book is sometimes considered his best work, so I had to read it. I mean if it's his best, it goes without saying that I should read it, right? It's pretty exciting, and it's fun to watch the way Patrick Lanigan (the main character) plans and the way John Grisham plots the story. Grisham probably won't ever be taught in a college English course, but he is a master storyteller. And if he ever decided to turn into a criminal, with his mind, watch out!

This one is clean and devoid of language issues. And I stayed up into the wee hours to finish it.

I just love the way Patrick handled Trudy and Lance, never felt boredom in any scene and that's what I like about Grisham books

I kinda expected happy ending but it never occurred and I'm upset about that

A man jogging down a lonely road in Brazil is kidnapped and tortured, accused of being Patrick Lanigan, an American lawyer who was thought to have been killed in an automobile accident four years earlier--about the same time that $90 million disappeared from his law firm's offshore account. If he really is Lanigan, everyone wants a piece of him: his former partners, the client that the money came from, his wife, the insurance companies, the feds . . . Everyone. So is this guy really Patrick, and if so, what's his plan?

I thought this was a highly entertaining legal thriller--implausible maybe, but who cares as long as it's fun?--until the very end. It lost a whole star with that ending. If you're going to pull off a twist like that, it needs some additional foundation. Foreshadowing. Something.

It felt like a cheap shot, manipulative and tacked-on, and left me more annoyed than an insurance company out a few million dollars. Or at least as annoyed as a reader out several hours and $26.50.

My recommendation: rip the last few pages out of the book and pretend they were never there. *plugs ears* Lalalala!

As someone who just got on GoodReads, gotta leave a book review for my all time favorite!! If you’re gonna read a Grisham, this is the one! His most original and different. As a Grisham fan, The Partner is a great author’s masterpiece.

I had read The Partner by John Grisham years ago and have just recently re-read. I believe I am more impressed today with the novel than 15 years ago when first published. The way Grisham is able to tell a story is, of course, entertaining, but Grisham’s descriptions of attorneys, their behaviors, and their egos are absolutely hilarious and spot-on! If you want some insight into how our justice system behaves look no further. Here is an entertaining story that will provide all the fun of a great storyteller and the insight to the mechanics of a justice system fraught with egos, ineptitude and downhome stupidity. Enjoy!

Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!

Excellent story and a cleverly written one at that! Intriguing and gripping until the end, ah yes, the ending…what am I to make of the ending?… Pretty sure it will leave the readers mind boggled, frustrated and feeling a little bad for Patrick. Some say it’s his just desserts. Awww.

Well…Grisham didn’t disappoint, again. This is one of the best ones I read so far. I gave it a 4 because I was really mad about the ending. Not because it wasn’t a good ending. It was a GREAT ending. I’m just pissed because I really liked Patrick. He planned everything so meticulously and it fell into place exactly as it should have. Except the one thing he was sure of. Or at least thought he was sure of.
The plot is about Patrick who fakes death and steals millions of dollars and disappears. Then he gets caught. Bit by bit Grisham reveals a piece of the story a little at a time. Perfect way to keep the reader wanting more. And I did.
Oh but the ending. It was ingenious. But it did not satisfy me. I’ll be thinking about this one for a while. And maybe I’ll come back and change the rating to a 5 once I’m over it.

My poolside reading yesterday - no worries about getting it wet.

Lots of long-term planning, litigation and loophole navigation but no courtroom theatrics; basically an unlikely story with a more or less predictable outcome. Just OK, but perfectly compatible with an air mattress, suncreeen, and a cold drink.

4 Stars for Partners (audiobook) by John Grisham read by Mark Deakins.

This is a fast paced and hard hitting crime story. There is definitely some gray lines and a little moral ambiguity thrown in.
