I enjoyed the movie so much I had to read the book. I figured usually the book is better, and in this case I was proven right. The narration is great, and if you saw the movie the plot remains the same. John Grisham writes not only as a good author, but knows the law. I read this book when I was going to school and it was sort of an inspiration for me to succeed the way the main character had to pass the bar and go up against corporate greed. I have this in my collection for reading again and again.

This was way better than the movie. Most of the changes that were made for the movie were better in the original. That's what happens when you have to edit for time. I loved watching Leo Drummond go down in flames in the book way more than in the movie. For such a long book (14 discs), the action kept moving along and truly kept my interest. Thanks for the recommendation, Andrew!

Read this after watching the movie (twice). The plot is good, keeps you engaged. But oh my word. You can tell this was written by a man. I mean sorry, but the way Rudy views some of Kelly’s supposed “flirtations” is just. Barf. Minus two stars for some of those interactions and fantasies. Like come on, dude.
Movie Rudy was better.

I hadn't remembered this until I saw a recent review. I'm adding so I don't re-read.

This is a great story about the flip side of the attorney business. An inexperienced lawyer wanting to do right by his clients against a stone wall of an insurance company not performing their contract.

A David and Goliath tale with a satisfying conclusion, I enjoyed reading this.

Another book I gotta put up there with one of Grisham's best! The Rainmaker tells us about the lies and corruption behind an Insurance Company, and it goes to show me that some companies are really like that, insensitive and cruel, makes me not want to trust any of them. But anyways, awhile back I saw the movie with Matt Damon, because I'm a big fan of him, I only saw it once and I don't remember it that well, and I was a little young to understand the legal stuff.

But now I've read the book and it was very easy to follow, and it has kind of a different feel to it than some of his past books, more emotional. The story held my interest and also holds a big twist In the end that you won't see coming. Highly recommended!

A very sloppy beginning and an even worse sloppy ending.
The beginning I found meandering. There were just too many plot lines that contained no suspense or anything that grabbed me. I couldn't even feel anything for the main character until close to the middle of the book.
The middle of the book, however, was fantastic. It was engaging and fast paced. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. The centerpiece of the book, the main trial, was handled absolutely fantastically. There were some detours to remind the reader of other weaker plot lines, but aside from that, I love it! Everything culminating to the nail biting climax was exciting, well written, well paced, and filled with characters with real emotional attachment.
Then it all completely fell apart at the end.
The reader got a brilliant conclusion to the primary story line, but then the secondary story lines needed their own half-hearted, and pointless conclusions.
The ultimate ending, without any spoilers, was a huge disappointment and seemed to negate just about everything great the book had going for it.
If I were to recommend this book, I would tell people to stop reading at the verdict because the absolutely pointless love interest plot picks up again and destroys everything good about the book.

Early Grisham from when he could be relied on for a good lawyer/courtroom thriller. I don't actually remember if it was in the book, but the line in the movie: "You must be stupid, stupid, stupid," from the insurance company to the distraught mother attempting to make a claim for her son's illness stuck with me forever as the epitome of bureaucratic contempt for individual rights.

Saying goodbye to several dozen books due to a water damage incident and I thought I'd write at least a little memorial to each of them and about why I kept them around.
