“The Christmas Story” written by Jane Werner Watson and illustrated by Eloise Wilkin (Copyright 1952, Golden Books, renewed 1980, Penguin Random House) is a timeless vintage retelling of the biblical account of Christ’s birth, told in a storybook that is also filled with wonderfully memorable, detailed illustrations. Jane Werner Watson (1915-2004) served as the editor of the original Little Golden Books, while writing quite a few of them as well. One of my all-time favorite illustrators, Eloise Wilkin (1904-1987), illustrated dozens of Little Golden Books during her long career. A very edited version (no mention of Mary as Virgin), which will be easily understood by younger children. The artwork is pretty and very colorful. I realize that I read and evaluate children's books through the lens of an adult, and I do take that into consideration. But somehow, this was just lacking in the miracle and majesty of the event being described--a divine and miraculous birth. However, the basics are there, so it's a good intro for very young children.
A really good simplified version of the text from the Bible. The illustrations are pretty too. The part about King Herod was a little understated, but that’s the only issue. (G rating)
A more detail-oriented children's book, for older children, perhaps elementary aged? Nothing elaborate but makes the story clear yet not overly simplified.
