This little Golden Book tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is beautifully illustrated and tells the story of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men and the birth of Jesus in a pure and simple manner for children. I gave this book to my littles in 1988 and we have read it many Christmases since then and enjoyed re-reading it this Christmas season.
Beautiful illustrations. The text is really close to the NKJV of the Bible in Luke (and Matthew for the wise men). Loved this one as a child, and it is great to read it to my own children.
I recently started going through books from my grandmothers, reading ones both I remember and those I don't but are very old while I was babysitting a friends kid.
This is one I am don't remember this one being read to me but reading it I like it and can tell a big difference from books for children of today then those over 35 years ago.
The writing wasn't always great: 'She lived long years ago.'
I liked the line "He shall be called the Son of God, and his kingdom shall never end."
I was disappointed in the skin tones that were way off. Joseph was pale with fair hair. And Mary had pale skin too. That in no way represents the people of Nazareth. Same goes for everyone else. There were fair-skinned, blond haired people in here, which is absurd.
In here it said Joseph only asked shelter for his wife which I hadn't heard before. All of a sudden when the wise men came in search of Jesus, they found them in a house. When did they get in a house?
We end with a blond, blue-eyed Jesus, which caps off the whole thing. 'The child was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was born. And the child grew and became strong in spirit and full of wisdom. And the grace of God was upon him.' I liked the last lines but felt it didn't really capture who Jesus was or what he means in Christianity. I liked all the colorful clothing and bright, deep colors inhere. I had the 1980 version, with Mary, Joseph and Jesus in a gold circle, with Jesus on the left side, but that version wasn't on GR.
A wonderful book that allows the beginning reader to be able to get to learn the Nativity without having to try to translate the older tongue of the King James Bible. Although it is a summary of the Nativity thus skips over a bunch of the story that leads up to the Christ's birth there are also a few areas where Bible verses are used that add their own special touch.
What makes this book so wonderful is that the pictures are so beautiful and realistic in most parts. You can feel that Mary, joseph and the rest of the Nativity cast are acting out the story yet again for the season while the details of their clothes and faces helps to ease readers that these very important people were and are people just like us.
So if you don't mind setting down the Bible for younger crowds another book you can add to a Christmas traditional reading so the youngest may follow even if they are just pointing at the pictures. Follow-up with the Bible version once the little ones are in bed and everyone can definitely participate in the retelling of the "Wonderful Story".
