In retrospect, I blame don Rosa for all my toxic ship preferences throughout my entire life. What else can you expect when your first baby OTP is Goldie/Scrooge?

“Maybe it's nicer to pretend that there's one person in this sorry world that I might... that I can...”

Don Rosa delves deeper into Scrooge's life and the fun adventures continue. Above all, I appreciated the way his relationship with Goldie was handled, it was cute and quite heartbreaking. Even Scrooge McDuck himself, the richest duck on earth, didn't manage to get everything that he needed after all.

Don Rosa, you are a genius.

I had read most of the stories, but the new ones were absolutely brilliant.

Rosa adds some tangential tales to his earlier multipart graphic biography of Scrooge McDuck, further developing the character and even giving us one story that the movie "Inception" seems inspired by. I learned to read from the original comic books & will always enjoy seeing the spirit of Barks' creative view of history & mythology turn up in the works of others who also revere him. Don Rosa's work is just flat out great.

This is the kind of quality entertainment people should think of when they think of Disney. I was shocked at how mature these stories were. Make no mistake, they are still all-ages comics. But they are all-ages comics that are sharp, deep, and not written down for the kiddies. Even without Don Rosa's text pages, I would guess that he loved these characters. The work he did to incorporate real life historic settings and figures just shows his dedication to telling great stories.
If you're not already a Disney fan, reading the works of Don Rosa just might change that.

Rosa really knows how to inject pathos and meaning into what could have been a simple, silly alternate history of the world. Donald Duck meeting his dead mother, Hortense, as a dream-memory in his Uncle's mind is extremely touching -- even if it has to end in a bit of slapstick.

And honestly, I can't believe they didn't include Rosa's "Hearts of the Yukon" in the official "Life & Times"! It had an incredibly poignant ending, right up there with the deaths of Scrooge's parents in the official volume. This entire volume, this simple "Companion", is just as good -- if not better -- than the original!
