Bu kitap yıl boyunca okuduğum nice kitabın şahı. Yazarın böyle bir konuyu nasıl keşfettiğin hiç anlamadım. Ama yazdım oldu da dememiş, öyle güzel inceleyip güzelleştirmiş ki, her satırının gerçekliğine okurunu ikna etmeyi başarmış.
Aldığım notların hepsinin karşılığını buldum.
Gerçek oladığını bilsem de gerçek olduğuna inandırdı bu kalem beni.

I usually give a book until page 50 to hook me, but I chucked this one at 42. Robbins strikes me as a sex-obsessed adolescent desperate to prove how clever he is. I felt like an indulgent mommy pushing myself past page after page. "Oh, Tommy. What big words you use. Such an original way to describe an orgy. Good boy." The premise of "mystery beets" did nothing for me and we didn't stay with any one character long enough for me to care. The king's discovery of "individualism" felt about 200 years past being relevant. "Gee you're deep, Tommy." I can see why he might appeal to some readers, the way Douglas Adams appeals, but for me, this is a novel only a mother could love. And luckily, Tom Robbins is someone else's kid.

Tom Robbins is, to me, like the band Rush (I know this seems like I'm trying too hard, but honestly, this is the best analogy I can come up with & this is legitmately the first thing that came to mind): You like them ok, and even get a bit excited when they come up on the radio, but when you're grabbing CDs for your car, your copy of "Moving Pictures" somehow never quite makes the cut. That's how it is with me and Tom Robbins. Well written? Check. Interesting characters? Check. Unique? Double check. Glad I read the book? Check...But somehow this is all never enough to get me to grab his next book off the shelf. Robbins is one of my wife's favorite authors, and I can see why, but somehow his work just doesn't grab me on a long-term basis. Still though - great book. If you want something a bit unique & haven't read his stuff yet, give this a try. Unlike me, you'll probably want more.

Parfümün Dansı'da Pazartesi bitti ama ben daha yeni yorum yazabiliyorum. Şu sıra okumaya zor zaman buldum. :)

Parfümün Dansı'nı genel olarak beğendim, güçlü bir karakter tablosu var ve hikaye örgüsü de oldukça iyi hazırlanmış, işin içine yazarın hayat-ölüm gibi konular üzerine düşünceleri de girince kitap okuması çok zevkli bir edebiyat şölenine dönüşüyor. İlk yarıda bunu çok güçlü hissetsem de sona doğru o kadar zevk almadığımı da belirteyim ve en sondaki öte dünya ile ilgili bölümü de hiç sevmedim, bir de yazar cinsel ilişkilere sanki gereğinden fazla yer ayırmış gibiydi. Yazarın kendine özgü tarzını sevdim, kitaptaki bağlantılar oldukça hoşuma gitti, üzerine çalışılmış bir kitap olduğunu oldukça iyi gösteriyor. Okuduğunuza pişman olmayacağınız, güçlü bir kitap.

This book is RIDICULOUS! Its a huge, dense story in a small package. I thought I would speed right through it, but it is so dense that it has taken me nearly 3 weeks to get through it.
I recommend this book highly. Its smart, thought-provoking, and over-the-top. I have never read anything like it before.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the incessant absurd metaphors that Robbins uses grow tiresome after the first few chapters. At first they seem clever, but then after the first 20 or so I started rolling my mental eyes each time he used another one.
But really, that is the only fault I can find with this novel. It has everything else I could ask for. And as soon as I finished it, I had the urge to turn to the first page and start over again (which is always a sign of a good book).

Parfümün Dansı beni yazar Tom Robbins ile tanıştıran kitap oldu. Kendisini sevdim mi sevemedim mi bilemiyorum. Ancak yazdığı şeyle beni çok zorladığını biliyorum.

Zor bir kitaptı Parfümün Dansı. Dili olsun, anlattığı şeyler olsun okuması zor bir kitaptı. Çok fazla felsefe ve mistisizm barındıran bir hikâye ve bu hikayenin bir ton karakteri var. Alobar, Alobar’ın eşleri ve Kudra, Pan, Priscilla ile Ricki, V’lu ile Madam Devalier, Claude LeFever ile Marcel LeFever, Bingo Pajama, Wiggs ve de kızı Huxley Anne. Ana karakterler olmasa da buraya yazmadığım bir iki kişi daha vardı sanırım.

Kitap öyle bir kitap ki, şu yukarıda yazdığım herkesi her şeyiyle tanıyorsunuz. Yazar ana karakter falan dinlememiş, bir şekilde bu hikâyeye karakterlerin hepsini tam hesaplı oturtmayı becermiş. Tebrik edilmesi gereken bir nokta, hatta kitap benim için ilk artı puanını buradan kapıyor.

Kişisel yok oluşun o sinsi donduruculuğu yanında başka her şey ölümsüz kalır.
Ölüm herkesin çorbasındaki sinektir.
Ölümü insanoğlu hiçbir zaman kabul etmemiştir, bugün ise, eskisi kadar bile kabullenmemektedir.

Ana konumuz ölüm ve koku. Bazı karakterler ölümsüzlüğün peşinde bazıları da insanın belleğine en iyi şekilde yerleşen kokunun peşinde. Kokuyu temel alan ve kokunun önemli bir bahis olduğunu vurgulayan bir kitap daha önce okumamıştım, yalan yok.

Kitabın giriş şekli baya iyiydi, buradan da ikinci artı puanı hak ediyor kitap. Özgün karakterlerle özgün bir girişe sahip. Kitap ilk başlarda akıcı gidiyor kitap ve daha başlar başlamaz okura karakter ve bilgi aktarımı yapmaya başlıyor. İster istemez merak ediyorsunuz karakterlerin hangi noktada birleşeceğini. Daha temel nokta bilinmediğinden de verilen bilgilerle de nereye varacağınızı kestiremiyorsunuz. Merak etmeyin karakterler biraz daha kendilerini tanıtmaya başladıkça taşlar yerine oturuyor. Benim için sıkıntı taşlar yerine oturduktan sonra başladı.

Bir süre sonra okumakta zorladım, kitabın başına geçmek istemedim çünkü kitap çok uzun bir süre boyunca hikayeyi yokuş yukarı sürdü. Böyle bir hikayenin dili de zor olunca yorulmaya başladığımı hissettim. Bir süre sonra sanki kitap tekrara düştü gibi hissettim. Ayrıca benim için kitaba eksi bir puan daha getiren nokta da, bazı kısımların çok fazla uzatılmasıydı.
Bir sıkıntı da çok fazla cinsellik içermesiydi. Anlatmak istediğim cinselliğin çok fazla abartıldığı. Kitapta gerçekten cinselliğin konu olması gereken noktalar vardı kabul ediyorum ama öyle zamanalar oldu ki artık sıradanlaşmaya başladı, bu da genelin sıradanlaşmasına neden oldu.

Kitapta çokça bahsi geçen bir diğer konu da Tanrı ve Din. Katılırsınız katılmazsınız orası ayrı konu ama Alobar’ın bu konuları sorgulandığı sahneler çok iyiydi. Hatta bu işi espri ile yapması kitabı okur kılan üçüncü artıydı, yani kitap üçüncü artı puanını buradan alıyor. Kitabın başındaki Alobar ile kitabın sonundaki Alobar bambaşkaydı. Hatta okurken kendisinin cesaretine hayran kaldım. Bu karakterin büyümesi, kendini geliştirmesi okumak çok zevkliydi.

Uzun lafın kısası özgün hikayesi, zekice kurgusu, sıra dışı karakterlere sahip olan zamanın ötesindeki bu kitap benim için arafta kaldı.


İsa’nın dediğine göre insan aydınlığa ulaşabilmek için elindeki her şeyi tehlikeye atmalıymış. Tüm insanların arasında özellikle senin anlaman gereken bir şey var. İnsanın toplum tarafından kendisine sunulan o güven verici nimetleri reddetmek için çok cesur olması gerekir. Hele de yalnız kalmış bir ruhun bilinmez zevklerini araştırmak uğruna.



İp! Şu tanrılarda da amma mizah anlayışı vardı, öyle değil mi? Eğer insanda kendi kaderini kendi eline alacak o demir güç yoksa, o insan kaderini tanrıların eline bırakırsa, o zaman tanrılar zayıflığının cezası olarak böyle alay ederlerdi işte onunla. Kendi gemine kaptanlık edemiyorsan, hangi yanlış limana vardığına şaşırmamalısın.

Kendi kaderinin tayin etmenin fiyatı hiçbiri zaman ucuz değildir. Hele bazı durumlarda , düşünülemez bile. Ama insan harikuladeliğe ulaşmak için, düşünülmeyecek olanı düşünmek zorundadır.

6/5. Just too good. Desert Island Read. A 5-tiered cake of Hero’s Journey.

Following the resounding success of my Locus Quest, I faced a dilemma: which reading list to follow it up with? Variety is the spice of life, so I’ve decided to diversify and pursue six different lists simultaneously. This book falls into my GIFTS AND GUILTY list.

Regardless of how many books are already queued patiently on my reading list, unexpected gifts and guilt-trips will always see unplanned additions muscling their way in at the front.

Ditto, Gertie, ditto!

A couple of years back I decided to get all of my immediate family the same present (same-same, but different) - as many second hand books as I could get for £20. I averaged about 7 books each.

My brother got various Mann Booker Prize winners. My Mum got a platter of modern sci-fi and fantasy. My Step-Dad got a selection of humorous fantasy works: this being one of them.

He likes authors like Tom Holt, Robert Rankin and Chris Moore. I wasn't familiar with Tom Robbins (at all, like, zilch recognition) but it kept popping up on Amazon's 'if you like this, you might like...' so I took a punt and chucked it into his birthday bundle.

There were two books he came back to me raving about and thrust into my hands - n  Lambn and n  n    Jitterbug Perfumen  n. Having read one Moore beforehand, I knew what to expect from n  Lambn, so I breezed through it in while stuck on a plane - and it's a good book. I didn't know what to expect from n  n    Jitterbugn  n, so I left it on a shelf... and it kept looking at me...

It's good! Not to put down their own work, but this is the kind of story that Holt & Rankin would kill to write! It's got just as much imagination and whimsy as their zany tales, but a much deeper and more finessed use of theme, and bucketloads more 'blood-on-the-walls' heart to it.

It's a story about immortality, perfume, passion and beets!

Quick tangent:(If you've never heard of British poet/rapper Scroobius Pip, check out the song 'The Beat That My Heart Skips' on youtube - that kept popping into my head (over and over again) as the 'The Beet That My Heat Skips')

It's light hearted and smart, it's fun, funny, and tremendously enjoyable. Robbins knows his way around a sentence and can certainly produce a playful paragraph - the man can write!

I particularly enjoyed Pan, the whale mask, the lesbian not-lover, heaven and the bees. A delightfully incongruous combination of words!

So why not a 5-star?

Because... It's just not quite my thing. It's a bit like watching Friends with the wife - there's no doubt it's entertaining, I don't complain about watching it - but I'd rather be watching Battlestar!

I doubt I'll ever feel the urge to re-read, and if there was a sequel I'm not sure I'd pick it up. We enjoyed our time together, but like a blind-date set-up that seems good in theory, it's clear the chemistry isn't right for a long term relationship.

After this I read: Greywalker

Tom Robbins'le tanışma kitabım oldu. Ben Tom Robbins'in kelimeleri ve şeyleri kendine özgü bir araya getiriş şeklini çok sevdim. İmgelem dünyası öyle kuvvetli ki; birbiriyle ilgisiz görünen şeyleri küçük birer çiçek buketi gibi bir araya getirip karşımıza çıkarıveriyor. Genellikle betimleme kısımlarını göz ucuyla hızlı hızlı okuyup geçen biri olarak, Parfümün Dansındaki betimlemeleri merakla, daha bi dikkatle takip ettim. Betimlemelerin yer aldığı her bir paragraf, kendi başına birer şiir gibi sanki.

İçerik de dil kadar ilgi çekiciydi benim için. Zamanında nihilist edebiyatı büyük bir sebatla okumuş olan ben; Parfümün Dansından sonra ölümsüzlük üzerine metinler okumaya başlayabilirim sanırım.

Ve; bu akşam yemekte tabii ki de pancar var.

Ένα από τα πιο ιδιαίτερα βιβλία, αν όχι το πιο ιδιαίτερο, που έχω διαβάσει. Αγγίζει με τόσο όμορφο τρόπο τις υπαρξιακές αγωνίες, τον φόβο του θανάτου και τον μυστικισμό, που ένιωσα πως μαθαίνω τις έννοιες "άνθρωπος", "ζωή" και "κόσμος" ξανά από την αρχή. Η αλήθεια είναι πως οι δευτερεύουσες ιστορίες με κούρασαν στην αρχή, όμως η βασική ιστορία άξιζε και με το παραπάνω!

Breathe properly. Bathe often. Eat your veggies (especially beets). Have lots of sex. These are the keys to staying young and living longer. Oh, and it's all intimately linked with our sense of smell.

At times hysterically funny, at times excruciatingly tedious ("Dannyboy's Theory" at the end made me want to gouge my eyes out with a shrimp fork), this book was, overall, good.

Not great. Not wonderful. Just good.

The book is full of odd characters who are likeable to varying degrees. I liked Marcel and his whale mask. Priscilla was refreshingly goofy. V'lu was intriguing. Alobar and Kudra were funny and real (and very, very old). Pan was an old goat (ha!). And Wiggs Dannyboy was just annoying. (I kept thinking that it would come out that he's not really Irish since he kept losing his accent.)

I was impressed with the amount of imagination that went into contriving the plot. It was very complex and well thought out. And Robbins' talent for metaphor & description and his ability to put words together in a unique way make his writing style very fun to read.

Again, I liked the book. If you like quirky, funny, far-fetched stories that stretch the imagination, this is the book for you.

I'll end with the line that made me almost fall off my chair laughing. "Does koala bear poop smell like cough drops?"
