I read this book because my partner and I have an agreement. We both love wildly different styles of books, so we each choose one of our favourites and make the other person read it. This was her choice (I made her read A game of thrones in case you're wondering).

I hated this book for it's subject matter and content. The damn thing ended just when it started getting interesting and glossed over anything that was actually worth finding out more about. (roughly the last third was fantastic, but she skipped over so many things that by the end I was more than a little disappointed.)

I didn't give a damn about any of the characters, couldn't identify with the setting and felt like the last third of the book, with it's incredibly different tone, would have better stood as it's own book.

That being said I love the author's turn of phrase. This for me is the literary equivalent of listening to someone with a beautiful voice read the phone book. The content is meaningless but damn it sounds good.

Wow! I started and abandoned this book a couple of years ago but tried again because of Gloria’s love for it… I flew through it this time! I think I’m still a little traumatized, I didn’t expect it to be so dark and deal with so many heart wrenching issues… but I learned some things about Catholicism and enjoyed the East coast setting. Definitely not a light read, the story certainly sticks with you.

I have long touted this book as my favourite ever, but decided to give it a re-read in advance of the NAC's two-part play. I'd forgotten how incredibly gut-wrenching this story is, and how hateful some of its main characters, so much so that I'm reconsidering whether I want to see the play. Don't get me wrong - this book is AMAZING ... it brings out every emotion imaginable. But I can't fathom watching some of the more horrific and crazy scenes play out on stage. Kathleen's diary comes at the perfect point in the book ... it adds some fun and lighthearted life experiences (and a whole lot of heat) to the story before throwing you back into the family drama. So tragic, but the ending is full of promise ... and penance.

Ho avuto finalmente l’incontro tanto atteso: quello col romanzo-romanzo. Lo aspettavo da tempo e lui è arrivato inaspettato, mentre cercavo dei libri che parlassero d’incesto. La bibliotecaria (una ragazza minuta, dai larghi occhi, verdi e inquietanti, che potrebbe entrare a pieno merito nel romanzo della MacDonald) mi ha detto di averlo letto tempo fa, e di averlo trovato bellissimo. Ok, aggiudicato. Mi acchiappo “Chiedi perdono”, più altri che trattano l’argomento: “La figlia femmina” di Anna G. Dato più un altro libricino di Isabelle Aubry, “La prima volta avevo sei anni.”. Leggiucchio l’ultimo, un romanzo verità: parla ovviamente di cose terribili ma purtroppo l’autrice scrive in un modo che mi fa passar la voglia di andare avanti: (che brutto vizio non sopportare la scrittura sciatta, e ancor meno quella omologata!)
Esito tra “La figlia femmina” e “Chiedi perdono”, poi prendo in mano quest’ultimo. In fin dei conti un Adelphi è - quasi sempre - una garanzia.
Leggo.
Leggo e sono felice. Leggo e mi commuovo, ma non nella pancia, no. Nessuna corda che vibra. Nessuna empatia coi personaggi, troppo lontani da me, troppo sopra le righe, troppo letterari, forse. E’ un’emozione tutta di testa, è rispetto, è gratitudine. E’ gioia per l’incontro con un’autrice che – vivaddio – ha scritto un grande, difficile romanzo.
Non posso che ammirare la sua abilità nel tenere in piedi una struttura di quasi seicento pagine, sapendo con sapienza spargere sassolini qui e là, annodare fili pendenti, lasciarne qualcuno dondolare libero per poi, mentre il lettore si pone mille domande, zac!, ecco che te lo riannoda sotto il naso, e tu dici, Ah, dunque era questo!
Non posso che ammirare la sua capacità di rendere i personaggi (tutti, e sono tanti) memorabili, e così diversi l’uno dall’altro! Katleen, la sua musica. I suoi capelli biondi. La sua alterigia e l’amore appassionato per il padre. Mercedes, gli occhi bruni sempre attenti a sorvegliare la famiglia, il suo essere quasi servile, la sua religiosità fanatica, il suo bisogno d’amore che si riversa sulla sorella Frances, fino a…
E Frances. Piccola, rabbiosa. Cinica. I grandi occhi nocciola con le schegge di luce verde che ti pugnalano, Frances che ha subito, Frances che si odia per quello che ha fatto da piccolina ai gemelli, e che vuole solo buttarsi via, dandosi in pasto agli uomini. E Lily, la dolce sorellina con la gamba cionca per la poliomelite. L’assennata, timida, meravigliosa Lily.
Ognuno di questi personaggi rimane impresso nella mente (un’impronta indelebile), così come Materia, la madre delle ragazze: bambina tredicenne si dà a James e lo sposa contro il parere della propria famiglia. Ma a poco a poco, incompresa dall’uomo che dovrebbe renderla felice, spegne ogni sua energia vitale, avvizzisce, tutte le sue energie sono per ostacolare lo squallido desiderio che intuisce nel marito.

Temi scabrosi, in questo romanzo: eppure la scrittrice ha una tale delicatezza nell’affrontarli da sfiorare la poesia.
Qui per esempio è il padre che parla:
“Sua figlia sta piangendo. E’ sconvolta. Le ha fatto male, come? Con le mie stesse mani. Dio santo.
Allunga le braccia, sfiora una spalla, un gomito, le cinge il fianco e la preme conto di sé, non le ha mai, non le avrebbe mai fatto del male, meglio morto, mi taglierei le braccia. Sente così intensamente quello che sente lei, abbracciandola: “Non piangere”. Una fatale empatia. “Calmati ora,” la gola riarsa e tesa, “sssh”, la deve proteggere [..]
Nel corpo gli entrano una vita e un calore che non sentiva da… che raramente ha sentito. Ti terrò al sicuro, tesoro mio, oh quanto ama quella ragazzina. La tiene stretta, niente paura, mai e poi mai ti farei del male. I capelli hanno un sentore di acerba primavera, la pelle è seta di mille telai, il respiro così fragrante, miele e latte nella tua bocca… Poi inorridisce. La lascia andare staccandosi bruscamente, perché lei non si accorga di quello che gli è successo. Malato, Devo essere malato. Esce dalla stanza e scappa dalla porta sul retro, attraversa il torrente fino all’orto, dove si calma abbastanza da vomitare.”
L’autrice ci sta dicendo che James, abbracciando la figlia Katleen, ha avuto un’erezione. Mette qui il primo sassolino per una storia che avrà un epigono – forse - scontato.

Ripeto, questo romanzo l’ho amato soprattutto di testa. Da scrittrice, non ho potuto che ammirare in toto la bravura della McDonald. Non ultima, la sua splendida scrittura. E’ un romanzo che t’inchioda e non ti lascia più. Però, c’è un però.
Non sono entrata un empatia con i personaggi perché li ho sentiti spesso eccessivi (vedi Frances quando si concia da puttana e masturba gli uomini per farsi dare i soldi che potranno mandare Lily a Lourdes (ma Lily, la meravigliosa Lily, non vorrà, lei ci tiene alla sua gambina malata); quasi sempre siamo davanti a situazioni inverosimili; i personaggi hanno spesso atteggiamenti poco spiegabili o addirittura incomprensibili; insomma, sono personaggi così lontani dalla realtà (seppure in qualche modo, veri) da avermi reso impossibile il riconoscermi in qualcuno di loro, il sentirlo mio: quello che in fin dei conti, un lettore chiede all’autore. Che gli parli, che parli proprio a lui.

This was a heavy one. I love how MacDonald positions the role of the reader as holder of truth. Staying present was a challenge at times, and for me (and others I can imagine) Kathleen and Rose’s love story was almost unbearable to endure for this very reason.

“I remember Sister Saint Monica warning us against “overly strong attachments” that doesn’t apply to Rose. Not to adore her is the sin” (494)

There is so much to say about the tales of the Piper sisters but Kathleen’s time in NYC particularly resonated with me. In a perfect world, Kathleen became the star she was destined to be, and her and Rose had more time together. If nothing else, a proper goodbye.

Een van die zeldzame boeken waarvan ik wou dat ik het opnieuw voor het eerst kon lezen.

J'ai vraiment adoré... L'intrigue est très bien ciselée, les personnages sont si bien définis qu'on prend plaisir à les aimer ou les détester. L'auteur a beaucoup de talent, autant pour les dialogues que pour les descriptions.

Výborná kniha. Strašlivý příběh. Od začátku jsem neměla problém se začíst a okamžitě mě vtáhly osudy prvních postav, i když jsem ještě nemohla tušit, jak moc budu zanedlouho nesnášet mladého Jamese a jak rozmanité pocity ve mně budou vzbuzovat jeho dcery. Třeba taková v zásadě nezajímavá Kathleen mi později téměř zlomí srdce, Frances má člověk střídavě chuť obejmout či profackovat, a Mercedes.. Mercedes Obětavá, fanatická, láskyplná a smrtelně děsivá. Nakonec se pro mě vykoupila. A vůbec, řada dalších postav příběhu, který se odehrává od konce 19. století až do poloviny 20. na kanadském ostrově Cape Breton a místy rovněž v New Yorku, prožívá situace tak silné, až mi nad tím rozum někdy stál. Přesto nic z toho nezní nesmyslně, vše do sebe čím dál tím víc zapadá a konec knihy je fantastický. Rozhodně se poohlédnu po autorčině dalším díle.

I was more productive than I've ever been when I was reading this book. Why? I was listening to the audiobook and could. not. stop. So, I kept doing more and more chores so I could keep listening to this book which was part drama, part mystery and 100% addictive.

The book follows the Piper family: James, the father, Materia, a Lebanese woman who was still a child when they married, and their four children: Kathleen, Frances, Mercedes, and Lily, through an intergenerational story of what makes, and breaks, a family.

Through the twists and turns of the 20th century, the family faces obstacles, both wrought by external forces, but also borne from the actions of the family themselves and the secrets that are kept from each other and the broader public. What seemed to start as your perennial Canadian novel of facing tough times in a tough part of the country, quickly turned to drama and mystery as MacDonald expertly weaves together the stories so that while the reader knows more than each of the characters, still so much is left in the dark until the very last moment.

There is so much dark in this novel, but it just makes the moments of joy, happiness, and beauty so much brighter. I felt as a witness to their stories, and as I learned to love each character, felt I could not put the book down until I saw it to the end.

Hoo boy.

This book took me a long time to read, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I don't even know what to say about this novel. The plot was so tightly woven that when the reveals slipped through, you are literally like "wut, the, fuck." Usually no reveals really hit me hard, sometimes one or maybe two reveals really get to me, but in this book there are at least five. This was a heavy and intricate book and possibly not like anything I've ever read before.

Padněte na kolena mě na kolena srazilo v tom smyslu, že nedokážu smysluplně vyjádřit, proč se mi knížka tak líbila. Možná proto, že mám ráda rodinné ságy a romány rozepjaté do delšího časového období. Tajemství opřádající rodinné klany. Román Ann-Marie Mac Donald je zajímavě umístěn časově i místně - do první poloviny 20. let na kanadský ostrov Cape Breton. Příběh byl pro mě nesmírně zajímavý, čtivý, postavy vícevrstevnaté a pozoruhodné, všechny mě zaujaly a všech mi kolikrát bylo líto, až se hrdlo svíralo (i když by se dalo říct, že si to kolikrát nezasloužily). Dlouho jsem zvažovala mezi čtyřkou a pětkou, ale závěrečná část knihy, která všechno perfektně propojí a která je opravdu jímavá, rozhodla pro pětku. Menší výtky mám, někde bych malinko prokrátila, některé úseky by v knize nechyběly, hodnocení není 100%, spíše 90%. Co na tom, že kniha připomíná jiné klasické ságy, co na tom, že nám je kolikrát jasné, co se asi dělo/bude dít. Rodina Piperova se mi zaryla do mozku a tam i zůstane. A možná se k ní někdy zase vrátím.

Well, this is one hell of a story. I did enjoy it and would recommend. However I’m not giving it 5 stars because I feel like the climax of the story happened about 100 pages before the book ends. Having said that, the last part did have some interesting reveals of the mysteries from earlier in the book, but I kinda feel like something shorter would have been better. Or perhaps the reveals could have happened before the climax? In any case, uplifting and haunting all at the same time.
