Read this book some years ago and I remember really enjoying it, especially the trial.

Although this was not the first Bohjalian book I read, it's the one that cemented me into a super fan of his fiction. Over the years I've loved many of his novels and were disappointed by a handful, especially recently.

For some reason this recently popped up in a recommended book list and when I saw it was only 5 hours on audio, I downloaded it and listened to it over the course of a day. And I can once again say for sure that this is one of my favorites. It's definitely held up over the years for me, and even though I knew the ending it still took my breath away when I listened to the final lines. So it will stay at 5 wonderful stars for me, and remain a book I absolutely recommend

Eh, this book was ok. I really liked it in the beginning, but about halfway through I got bored with the same details over and over and over...it just got old. I found myself skipping paragraphs, then pages, then entire chapters. Just a little too much repetition of details. It started off good but lost me midway. :(

Nhưng nếu nhìn cho thấu đáo, “bà mụ” không chỉ là nghề hay nghiệp, nó còn xuất phát từ tình thương yêu, sự đam mê với nhiệm vụ thiêng liêng của người phụ nữ - đó là sinh đẻ. Dù thế nào cũng có thể thấy, nghề bà mụ cũng có cho nó một triết lý sống riêng, những trải nghiệm và nền tảng được xây dựng qua nhiều năm với vô số ngày và đêm để đem sự sống đến với cuộc đời này.

Vị luật sư lão luyện Stephen Hastings quả là một người đàn ông cương trực, sắc sảo, quyết liệt mà vô cùng ấm áp. Sự đồng hành không mệt mỏi, bảo vệ đến cùng cho thanh danh của Sibyl Danforth nói riêng, của nghề bà mụ nói chung là một bước ngoặt lớn lao, một cú hích cho sự nghiệp của ông. Những hướng dẫn tận tình, truy luận sắc bén, an ủi mực thước đã đem đến cho gia đình Sibyl Danforth một niềm hy vọng và sự hoà thuận lẫn cảm thông không nhỏ. Quá trình trưởng thành từ cô bé đến thiếu nữ với bao nổi loạn ngầm Connie luôn có sự đồng hành của mẹ nên cô thấu hiểu mẹ hết mực. Theo dõi và lo lắng cho từng biến chuyển của vụ án, Connie đã có một quyết định vô cùng đúng đắn vào phút cuối, quyết định ấy đã thay đổi tất cả, là minh chứng cho tình mẫu tử tuyệt diệu và là định hướng cho công việc trở thành bác sĩ sản phụ khoa sau này của cô.

Một vụ án đầy kịch tính và vô cùng nhân văn đã kết thúc có hậu. Nghề bà mụ là một nghề nghiệp đáng trân quý dẫu cho nó đã dần vắng bóng và không được thừa nhận nhiều hơn. Quyển sách đưa ta đến những khoảnh khắc vượt cạn của những phụ nữ sắp làm mẹ một cách chi tiết và sống động đến nỗi ta ngỡ như mình đang gồng, đang rặn cùng họ. Những ca đẻ tại nhà đôi khi cô đơn, đôi khi có sự quây quần của đại gia đình. Đọc để hiểu rằng việc sinh đẻ là một cuộc chiến mệt nhoài, cửa sinh là cửa tử. Nhưng cũng là món quà quý giá khi vượt thoát và “dâng trào tinh hoa”, đó là khoảnh khắc một sự sống mới vươn ra thế giới, là niềm hạnh phúc không thể đong đếm cho người mẹ và cho cả bà mụ. “Đẻ tại nhà là một trải nghiệm cực kỳ mạnh mẽ và tăng cường sức lực, nó cho những người phụ nữ yếu đuối nguồn năng lượng, sự tự tin và sức mạnh. Họ biết cơ thể mình có thể làm được gì, và nó cho họ sự động viên.”

Đọc Chris Bohjalian mà cứ ngỡ như đọc một nữ nhà văn. Hiểu tường tận về việc sinh đẻ lẫn nghề đỡ đẻ như vậy, ông hẳn là người biết trân trọng và yêu thương phụ nữ. Văn viết gãy gọn, miêu tả tâm lý rất sâu. Dù đôi chỗ diễn giải hơi dài và lập lại nhưng tổng thể là một tác phẩm nhân văn, chỉn chu và đầy cảm xúc.

A well written and eminently readable book that explores the very real and age-old disagreement between obstetricians (medical doctors), nurse-midwives and lay midwives. I have to reveal my biases here, as a former nurse, but a female non-procreator. Giving birth is, of course, natural, but can be lethal to both the woman and the baby if things go wrong. This book is the story of a delivery that went very wrong. Someone had to be blamed, of course, and the midwife was the obvious culprit. The author does a very good job of showing the humanity of Sibyl (the lay midwife involved) and her family. She was experienced, knowledgeable and caring, but none of these virtues helped avoid a disaster. The second half of the book details the preparations for the trial and then the trial itself.
I was invested in this realistic story from start to finish.

The actual rating is closer to 3.5 stars. This was an interesting read and I quite enjoyed the writing style which was very vivid in depicting certain scenes. Let's just say I'm very happy we have epidurals nowadays. However, the parts in which Connie talks about her teenage life were sometimes boring and I didn't see any connection between them and the story. Sybil's notes were particularly intriguing to me and I went in expecting the book to be more centered around her inner workings, rather than her daughter's, but maybe the end wouldn't have been as impactful had it been written from Sybil's perspective. The book is definitely worth a read.

So the Washington Post Book World says that this will keep readers up late until the last page is turned. I started the book this morning, and only had hopes that it'd be as good as the last few books I've read. Didn't think I'd do all 370 pages today. LOL

I guess depending on how you feel about midwives and home births, you could view this book as an injustice upon Sibyl, or an injustice against the woman who died. Personally, I feel that a woman has the choice as to whether she wants a home birth or a hospital birth. It's her body, and if she wants the baby at home, fine. But if there's a medical problem, then the hospital is the place to go. But I understand that things happen.

I'm getting worked up about this, and I know it's a work of fiction. But I know women have been prosecuted and tortured for being midwives. It's an Oprah Book Club book, of course it's going to bring up opinions. Don't a great deal of her choices do?

So yes. A thought-provoking book. Well-researched. And I was surprised to see it was written by a man. lol

Really two and a half stars. The pace of the story was pretty slow until the trial, which started after the half way mark. There is a bit of a twist at the end, but you kind of expect something like that to happen. An OK read.

A very unexpected story. Sibyl the midwive and her patient. Sibyl is accused of murder, but she saved a life . The majority of the story took place in the court room, with all the drama. Sibyl's life changes forever. The story was very well written .

In this book, Chris Bohjalian skillfully turns an intimate family tragedy into a courtroom thriller that keeps me on the edge of my seat until the very end. It's all the more impressive that he narrates the story using the voice of a teenage girl.

Sybil is a midwife and Connie's mom. The story is told from Connie's viewpoint. Connie is 14 years old when it happens. Sybil is helping a mom, Charlotte, in labour, but there is trouble, and Charlotte dies. Hoping to still save the baby, Sybil performs an emergency C-section on Charlotte. Unfortunately, there is now doubt as to whether or not Charlotte was actually dead before the C-section, or if that may have been what killed her. Sybil is charged, and brought to trial.

I have to admit this book surprised me. I had no idea I would like it nearly as much as I did. I don't want kids, so the first couple of chapters may have been a bit too much info for me, with the detail about women giving birth, but once the story really got going... once the night of Charlotte's labour and death arrives, then the subsequent investigation and trial happens, wow! I just did not want to put the book down. If I wasn't reading the book, I wanted to be. The tension and suspense as to what would happen, who would say what, especially at the trial, was huge. Of course, being told from Connie's viewpoint, you see how this affects the entire family. But, it was really the tension and suspense in the book that really drew me in and wouldn't let go. This will most likely be on my favourites list for the year.

I ran across this one at a used book store in Providence and picked it up vaguely remembering hearing or reading good things about it, so I picked it up.

I am surprised I didn't realize that the book was, well, about midwives, until I started reading it! I learned more than I really wanted to about child birth (though I do not regret it). The book is about one child birth gone horribly wrong, but really, it is about a whole lot more than that. The second half was especially intense. The book makes you think about a lot of things, including, family, loss, medicine, law, and such. Bohjalian writes really well and read the whole book fairly fast. I would recommend it.
