Some interesting insights for those who have just delved in the the Dark Tower universe, but if you're a Dark Tower junkie, there's not a lot of new information here.it does give you a kind of blueprint to related King books, and I did get a bit of closure on a few things I never could get to jive, but by and large not much I didn't already know. YMMV

Bev Vincent zaskoczył mnie swoim niezwykle kompleksowym podejściem zarówno w obrębie omawianego cyklu, jak również wszechstronną znajomością nie tylko dorobku Stephena Kinga, ale literatury, z której twórca "Mrocznej Wieży" czerpał inspiracje.

"Droga do Mrocznej Wieży" jest w moim odczuciu pozycją, której nie powinien pominąć żaden fan twórczości Kinga. Poza starannie streszczonymi poszczególnymi częściami "największego dzieła" autora "Mrocznej Wieży", sporo miejsca poświęcono pozycjom spoza cyklu, mniej lub bardziej wpisującym się w kanon tej epickiej opowieści.

Zarówno do streszczeń, jak i obszernych charakterystyk "bohaterów dramatu" dodano liczne dygresje, uściślające źródła inspiracji, wskazujące na liczne motywy i tropy, charakterystyczne dla pisarstwa Kinga i nie tylko. Jest rzeczą naprawdę zaskakującą, jak wiele może umknąć mniej uważnemu czytelnikowi a które po wskazaniu przez Vincenta okazują się wręcz oczywiste i idealnie wpasowujące się we właściwie miejsce układanki - choć uprzednio mogły wydawać się elementami wprowadzonymi bez konkretnego zamysłu.

Najciekawszą partią - nie żeby pozostałe części były "nieciekawe" - książki wydają mi się wieńczące ją eseje, w których autor przygląda się cyklowi z punktu widzenia inspiracji i ram gatunkowych, w które poszczególne części i elementy "Mrocznej Wieży" się wpisują, oraz próbuje przeanalizować proces twórczy, który doprowadził do stworzenia - bodajże - najdłużej pisanej opowieści w historii ludzkości.

Kolejna z książek, które zdecydowanie powinny zostać wydane w języku polskim! Rzetelna, spisana w interesujący sposób, otwierająca umysł na zupełnie nowe interpretacje wydarzeń z "Mrocznej Wieży", jak i innych książek Stephena Kinga.

PS. Jedynym do czego mógłbym się przyczepić, to fakt, iż "Droga do Mrocznej Wieży" nie obejmuje wydawnictw, które ukazały się po roku 2003. "Wiatr przez dziurkę od klucza" i liczne komiksy znacząco poszerzające wiedzę o uniwersum MW zostały tu z oczywistych przyczyn pominięte. Liczę, że kiedyś ukaże się wydanie wzbogacone o analizę tych pozycji, zwłaszcza, że z komiksami około-wieżowymi nie miałem w ogóle do czynienia.

If you're looking for a thought-provoking exploration of the themes of The Dark Tower series, you won't find it here. Aside from the seven chapters which summarise the first seven books in the series (which I didn't mind, nice to have a recap. No mention at all of Wind Through The Keyhole though) there is no real attempt to dig deep in to Stephen King's magnum opus at all.

Once Vincent is done summarising chapters, he then sets about examining how it relates to King's other works. Except all he does here is summarise those other works. If you haven't read these other works, you're having the entire plot spoiled for you in a couple of pages, if you have, you gain nothing. For instance, I know I definitely want to read Insomnia. The entire plot is sketched out over a few pages. Nightmare.

Once this set of summaries is over, Vincent sets about summarising characters. Again, there is absolutely no information here that you wouldn't already know if you hadn't read the books. Absolutely tedious.

I was expecting something a bit more exciting at the end, summary after summary finally out of the way. There's some interesting info about how Browing's poem 'Child Roland...' influenced other works (a C.S. Lewis story for instance) but most of the 'analysis' provided in these final few chapters is taken from Stephen King's own introductions and appendices to in the Dark Tower series itself. Vincent doesn't really paraphrase it, he just quotes entire chunks from books you've already read.

If this were an A-level or university essay, it would get low mark - a D, maybe, an E on the basis that it relies too heavily on copy and pasting the author's own work and shows no original thought.

This book is definitely wonderful.

An impressively detailed work - I only wish there was an update to include all the post-2004 DT works.

The great story that brings together the work of a lifetime by King is here unpacked book by book. Essential to the story is how it came about, you will love it.

The perfect guide to the Dark Tower saga

In The Road to The Dark Tower Bev Vincent takes the fans on a journey through the wonderful world of Stephen King's Magnus Opus. He starts off with a meticulous analysis of the seven Dark Tower books, nicely avoiding any academic mumbo jumbo. That�s effectively one of the strong points of this book: it does not judge, only analyses the storyline and helps find surprising links you missed while reading the books. In a second part the author dives deeper into the related Stephen King works and shows how the quest of Roland Dechain has seeped systematically into almost all recent works of Stephen King. In a third part the focus is more on the main characters and the source material that has been used to create this great saga. Throughout the narrative it quickly becomes clear that Bev Vincent is a fan himself and that makes reading this book a great joy.

The Road to The Dark Tower is a must read for anyone who has enjoyed the Dark Tower and wants to learn more about arguably one of the best works Stephen King has produced.

Not much to say here, as this book speaks for itself. This is a solid overview and exploration of The Dark Tower as a whole, and it was nice to revisit the series in cliff note form. Highly recommended to any fan of DT, though any self respecting fan would already know that.
