I was really excited to stumble across this book (huge Stephen King fan bigger fan of the DT Series). I read it in one sitting and found myself bored with all the information that I could have easily gotten with a quick Google search. It's more like Cliff Notes, or a summary . I wouldn't say it's the author's fault, I had my own role to play in my disappointment, I thought I would be reading about so special information, fan secrets, or even an interview with "The King" about his personal journey while writing his Magnum Opus. Note to self read the reviews first and the book description.
To staunch upon this narration over chemistry of male dominated relationship over the inheritance of power with predominantly cohesive stigma existing within the society and different stratas of ecosphere with minimal exposure of matriachy unknowingly bequeathed for all the age group conflicted over the mannerism to function as a herd.
The fact that this book is mostly synopsis (and very useful in that respect) and only a little bit actual nerdy, scholarly stuff only serves to prove one thing: The Dark Tower series can't be mapped, set in time-frames, categorized, studied closely or even explained too thoroughly. The guide is best read after finishing the books, to fix all the main events firmly in one's mind and revisit the entire picture one last time. But as far as trying to pry the world(s) of the Dark Tower at the seams to see what is made of what and how, I think it's best not to try very hard and just accept things as they are told in the actually narrative. To ride the aven kal, as it were... and not ask too many questions.
As a huge fan of Dark Tower, I was dissapointed with this "analysis" of the series. Even worse, I felt tricked. This book absolutely has no reason for existence for 3/4 of it is just a summary of plots from all Dark Tower books, just a brief retelling of this gigantic series. There is no analysis (and everyone who read the series knows how much space there would be there for building various theories), there is just listing of observations, like: "number 19 appears on the this and that pages". Seems the author didn't have balls to build his own theories and explanation for various crucial plot spots. So, why would anyone read this brief re-telling of Dark Tower books instead of just reading the original thing? Fans wouldn't benefit from it, just like the people who didn't read the series. So for who is this actually written?
I finished the Dark Tower books 15 years ago (2009). I had many questions about the characters fate and how they were intermingled in the none DT novels such as Insomnia. This book explains all and let me enjoy the entire story at a new level.
This was mostly synopsis, which was kind of boring since it proceeds without the magic of King's storytelling. It did provide some insights, so if you're totally obsessed with The Dark Tower it might be worth a read.
After six months, this marks the end of my first full reread since I was 17 of the Dark Tower series: graphic novels, books, side-quels, and commentaries. I was terrified it would not live up to the towering place it holds in my memory; it taught me to love stories and is one of the reasons I'm a teacher, if I'm honest. Well here we are, finished, and I can say that it is still the greatest thing I've ever read - BETTER in fact than I remembered - and I don't suspect anything will ever topple its place in my heart and mind. Can't wait for my next turn of the wheel. And we all say thank ya.
