The plot of Jackdaws is pretty straightforward--in the days leading up the Allied invasion of France in 1945, British spies, working with the French resistance, are trying to blow up a crucial telephone exchange in Nazi-occupied France. The first attempt fails, with much of the team being captured and tortured. One of the members of that team, a skilled female operative named Flick, escapes back to London and argues for a follow-on team. The British government agrees, given the importance of the target, but spies are in short supply at this point in the war, so Flick ends up forming an all female team of highly inexperienced women to make a second attempt on the target. They will parachute into France, and infiltrate the castle housing the telephone exchange by posing as cleaning women. The book also tells the parallel story of the German officer who makes it his mission to capture Flick and force her to give up her contacts in the resistance.

Despite my intense interest in history and the compelling subject of this book, I found it an incredibly boring, and predictable, read. The story never really comes to life and just sort of plays out to the ultimate conclusion--the completion of the mission, the daring escape, set against the backdrop of the well-known Allied invasion and ultimate German defeat.

I've heard good things about other Follett books, so one should look elsewhere for a first Follett book to read.

I was disgusted by this book and thought perhaps Follett had lost his mind.

I was excited to pick up this book by Follett, set in France during WWII, as I'm interested in that period of history and I really enjoyed this authors The Pillars of the Earth a few years ago. I have to say I didn't enjoy this as much. While the story kept me interested and I liked the central characters, especially the strong female protagonist, the writing just felt far too formulaic and, frankly, a bit lazy. This was a lazy holiday beach read for me and for that purpose was absolutely fine, but it's not a book I'd especially recommend.

Let me preface this by saying that I love historical fiction having anything to do with Europe between the years 1900-1945. World War Two dramas are usually filled with such drama and atmosphere that I can't help but be excited by it. I'm not sure why, but I love it.

This book found me while I was on my French Resistance kick, and it's about a squad of British Female Spies that parachute into occupied France to aid in the Resistance. Sure, it's a mass-market paperback thriller, but it's a fun, fast-paced read and I love the authenticity of detail, from the description of the spy mindset while being followed, to the images of "ersatz coffee" that was used while regular coffee was being rationed. Ersatz coffee, by the way, was usually ground and roasted chicory. Not terribly tasty.

What intrigues me most about this book is what shocked me about the movie Charlotte Gray. Women are usually depicted as nurses and faithful homebodies during WWII. The fact that many women risked their lives and actually parachuted into France blows my mind. Most male soldiers didn't even parachute, let alone into occupied enemy territory.

This novel takes place during World War Two in Occupied France. The main protagonist is Felicity(Flick) Clairet. She as been chosen to lead a group of women, mostly English, into Sainte-Cecile to sabotage its telephone system in order to prevent the Germans from any communications on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Jackdaws is an exciting novel to read; in which the reader would hardly want to put down before finishing.

J’ai découvert Ken Follett avec Les piliers de la Terre, après avoir visionné la série du même nom. J’avais beaucoup aimé cette dernière, peut-être un peu moins le roman, très dense et truffé d’informations trop techniques sur la religion et la construction des cathédrales. J’avoue que je craignais cette densité en me lançant dans Le réseau Corneille mais à ma grande surprise, le style n’est pas du tout le même. Le rythme est bien plus dynamique et je ne me suis pas ennuyée une seconde.

Le récit prend place à la fin de la 2nde Guerre Mondiale, quelques jours avant le débarquement des troupes alliées en Normandie. La Résistance s’est mise en tête de détruire un centre de communication allemand, cible primordiale pour faciliter la dernière grande bataille. Pour cela, Betty monte une équipe d’agents féminins qui se feront passer pour des femmes de ménage. Ken Follett suit alternativement Betty et le major Dieter Franck, un officier allemand obsédé par l’idée de paralyser la Résistance dans tout le nord de la France.

Même s’il est vrai qu’il est assez attendu, c’est un face à face très prenant que l’auteur nous propose ici. Betty est une femme expérimentée, celle qui a passé le plus de temps en France dans la clandestinité. Elle est dotée d’un instinct très sûr, qui va lui sauver maintes fois la vie. C’est une meneuse née, sensible aux caractères bien différents des femmes qui vont se retrouver sous ses ordres. Bien sûr, on n’échappe pas à l’histoire d'amour avec le bel Américain à demi estropié, mais cela ne prend heureusement pas le pas sur l’intrigue.

En parallèle, on découvre le major Franck, officier aux fortes convictions. Persuadé d’être dans le vrai, il considère les tortures qu’il fait subir aux Résistants comme un passage obligé pour obtenir la vérité et des informations visant à protéger ses hommes et son pays. Marié en Allemagne mais amoureux d’une jeune Française, il va se laisser emporter, d’abord par une certaine soif de gloire puis par son désir de vengeance et enfin son obsession de capturer Betty. Ainsi, cet homme “pas si mauvais” (avec d’énormes guillemets, attention) va s’abandonner au monstre qui sommeille en lui.

Le rythme de l’intrigue est assez lent jusqu’à la constitution de l’équipe de Betty et pourtant, c’est passé en un clin d’œil. J’ai dévoré toute la deuxième partie ! On est pris dans l’urgence de la situation de ces Corneilles dont la mission doit à tout prix être réalisée avant le débarquement. L’affrontement des deux personnages principaux est captivant et met en balance les enjeux de chaque camp, tout en rendant un bel hommage à ces femmes qui se sont battues comme des hommes durant la 2nde Guerre Mondiale. Une très belle découverte.

She flavors her confident delivery with a wry cynicism that is inherent to Flick's character, and her use of international as well as regional accents keeps the rapid narrative flowing flawlessly.

If I was cynical I could say this may be Follett's very own recurring wet dream:

Sounds like that n  Mel Brookes filmscriptn doesn't it. And if not that, maybe it would have been a strong contender for the n  Benny Hill-esque Chase Scenen or toned down this could be an assignment for Charlie's n  original trion.

All that said, this was rather good, taut and exciting, however it was hard to keep concentrating with all these asides my brain wanted to fling at me.

Whenever I read a Ken Follett novel, I expect a lot. Not every book I’ve read by him has been outstanding but most have and so I always hope for one of those. This one certainly qualifies.

It’s a story that takes place during the ten days just prior to the D-Day landings in 1944 during WWII. The French resistance is in full gear, expecting the imminent invasion, even if they don’t know the exact date. The SOE (Special Operations Executive) in London has determined to support the French resistance in its efforts to sabotage a key target which, in turn, will greatly aid the success of the invasion. The Gestapo HQ in Paris in the square at Sainte-Cécile, also houses the critical telephonic communications hub. If that were to be taken out of commission, then critical communications to those defending against the invasion forces would be severely impacted.

We follow along with Felicity “Flick” Clairet as she builds a team to infiltrate and destroy the communications hub. She chooses all women (Code name: "Jackdaws") so that they can pose as a cleaning crew and make it easier to withstand close scrutiny. Recruitment proves difficult and she must settle for inexperienced women with very little time to train. Most of them are misfits in one fashion or another – comparisons to the Dirty Dozen are not inaccurate.

One mark of an excellent thriller story is the quality of the primary antagonist and here, the character of Major Dieter Franck, working on Field Marshal Rommel’s staff, is a wonderfully drawn bad guy. He is extremely dedicated to his task of finding Flick and stopping her mission, and while he can be deliciously evil in his effective torture techniques, he also demonstrates admirable traits of intelligence and dogged determination.

The pacing here is perfect. A nice buildup of intrigue and emotion and stressful intensity interspersed with danger as well as softly romantic moments. The pages keep turning despite whatever else might be going on in your life that would drag you away from reading further. The danger is real, and not all characters survive but the ending is deeply satisfying.

Highly recommended.

টর্চার সেলে নির্যাতনের সময় বন্দীর চোখ বাঁধা থাকলে প্রত্যেকটা আঘাত আসে ভয়ংকর চমক হিসেবে আর প্রত্যেকটা আঘাতের মাঝের সময়টা কাটে প্রচন্ড উদ্বেগের মধ্যে। শ্যাতোর ইন্টারোগেশন সেলে নগ্ন অবস্থায় একটা খুঁটির সাথে বেঁধে রাখা হয়েছে মেয়েটাকে। বেকায়দাভাবে ঝুলছে এক হাত বোঝাই যাচ্ছে কাঁধ থেকে স্থানচ্যুত হয়ে গেছে তা। ইন্টারোগেশনের সময় পা ভেঙে দেয়াটা একটা ভালো আইডিয়া। প্রচন্ড ব্যথা পাবে বন্দি, বিশেষ করে নড়তে গেলে ভাঙ্গা হাড়টা যখন খোঁচা মারবে। এজন্য যত্ন করে লক্ষ্য স্থির করে সর্বশক্তি দিয়ে জায়গা মতো আঘাত করা হলো, লম্বা হাড়টা ভাঙার শব্দ শোনা গেল। বন্দীর অনুনয় বিনয় না শুনে স্টিলের ক্রোবারটা দিয়ে আবারো পায়ের হাড় ভাঙা যেখানে কাঁচা মাংস বের হয়ে আছে সেখানে মারা শুরু করা হলো। পাশের ঘরের বন্দীটি এখন একদম অন্য এক মানুষে পরিণত হয়েছে, ফুঁপিয়ে ফুঁপিয়ে কাঁদছে আর ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা করছে। 


জ্যাকডজ বইটার কাহিনী শুরু হয়েছে ১৭৯৩ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত এই শ্যাতোকে ঘিরে। একসময় ফ্রান্সের অভিজাত লোকদের জন্য তৈরি করা হলেও যুদ্ধকালীন সময়ে স্ট্র্যাটেজিক কারণে এই এক্সচেঞ্জটি নাজি জার্মানদের জন্য খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এই এক্সচেঞ্জের মাধ্যমে জার্মান হাইকমান্ডের সকল নির্দেশ বার্লিন থেকে উত্তর ফ্রান্সে আসে। মিত্রবাহিনী এ বিষয়টা খুব ভালোভাবেই জানে, এজন্য গত কয়েক সপ্তাহ ধরে শ্যাতোর উপরে ক্রমাগতভাবে বোমাবর্ষণ করা হচ্ছে। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সেই সময়ের ঘটনার কথা এখানে বলছি যখন নরম্যান্ডি ইনভেশন শুরু হতে মাত্র ১০ দিন বাকি। জার্মান ফিল্ড মার্শাল রোমেল তার সর্বোচ্চ শক্তি দিয়ে ইনভেশন ঠেকানোর চেষ্টা করছে। ‌এর ভিতরে ফ্রেঞ্চ রেজিস্ট্যান্সের দল শ্যাতোতে অবস্থিত জার্মান টেলিফোন এক্সচেঞ্জ এর উপরে হামলা করে বসে। রেজিস্ট্যান্সের অধিনায়ক জানতো এই টেলিফোন এক্সচেঞ্জ ধ্বংস করলে জার্মান হাইকমান্ডের সাথে ফ্রান্সে অবস্থিত নাজি বাহিনীর যোগাযোগ পুরোপুরি বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে যাবে আর যোগাযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে গেলে হিটলার তার রিজার্ভ আর্মি সময় মতো ব্যবহার করতে পারবে না। যুদ্ধের মোড় যে কোন সময় ঘুরে যেতে পারে যদি এই গেরিলা হামলা সফল হয়। নিজেদের প্ল্যান মত শ্যাতোতে হামলাও চালায় চৌকষ গেরিলারা কিন্তু পুরো হামলাটাই ব্যর্থ হয়। কিন্তু S.O.E এর মেজর ফ্লিক ছিল অন্য ধাতুতে গড়া এক মহিলা। সে ইংল্যান্ডে ফিরে গিয়ে আবারো একটা গেরিলা দল তৈরি করে। ভিন্ন ভিন্ন কাজে এক্সপার্ট ছয় জন নারীর গেরিলা দলটার নাম দেয়া হয় জ্যাকডজ। অন্যদিকে ফ্রেঞ্চ রেজিস্ট্যান্সের প্রথম অপারেশন চোখের সামনে প্রত্যক্ষ করে নাজি মেজর ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটার। একজন শিকারি যেমন আরেকজন শিকারীকে দেখলে খুশি হয়ে যায় রক্তের নেশায়, ফ্লিকের সাথে দেখা হওয়ার পর ডিটারের সেই দানবীয় নেশা জেগে উঠে।


কেন ফলেটের 'পিলার অব দ্য আর্থ' যদি কারো পড়া থাকে, রীতিমতো অবাক হবেন কি বিশাল পরিসরে দশকের পর দশকব্যাপি কাহিনি লেখায় ওস্তাদ তিনি। অথচ জ্যাকডজের পুরা কাহিনির ব্যাপ্তি মাত্র ১০ দিন। তবে স্বল্প সময়ের ভিতরেই লেখক বেশ বড় পরিসরে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের এই স্পাই থ্রিলারটি চিত্রায়িত করেছেন। উপন্যাসটির উল্লেখযোগ্য একটা বিষয় হলো এটা ফাস্ট বা স্লো পেসড কোনোটাই নয়, বাস্তবে একটা ঘটনা যেভাবে আগায় ঠিক সেরকম গতিতেই সামনের দিকে কাহিনী এগিয়েছে। যুদ্ধের সাথে পারিপার্শ্বিক পরিবেশ ফুটিয়ে তোলা হয়েছে নিখুঁতভাবে, এর সাথে লেখক চরিত্রগুলো বিল্ডআপ করেছেন বেশ সময় নিয়ে। যুদ্ধকালীন সময়ে গেরিলারা কিভাবে তাদের অপারেশনগুলো পরিচালনা করে, গুপ্তসংবাদ পাঠানো এবং সেগুলো ডিকোড করা, ছদ্মবেশ ধারনের মাধ্যমে এক দেশ থেকে আরেক দেশে এজেন্ট পাঠানো, পরিকল্পিতভাবে একটা সুরক্ষিত জার্মান সামরিক স্থাপনায় আঘাত হানার বিষয়গুলো চমৎকারভাবে ফুটিয়ে তোলা হয়েছে। একদিকে যেমন গেরিলারা তাদের মত পরিকল্পনা করে সামনে আগাচ্ছিল, অন্যদিকে তাদের পিছে জোকের মত লেগেছিল ফিল্ড মার্শাল রোমেলের সবচেয়ে সেরা একজন ইন্টেলিজেন্স অফিসার। 


উপন্যাসটা আমার কাছে সবচেয়ে উপভোগ্য লেগেছে ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটারের মতো দুর্ধর্ষ এবং ঠান্ডা মাথার গোয়েন্দা অফিসারের জন্য। জার্মানদের স্বভাবজাত তীক্ষ্ণ বুদ্ধি, শেয়ালের মত ধুরন্ধর আর যেখানে যে উপায়ে ট্যাকটিকস খাটিয়ে তথ্য আদায় করা দরকার সেখানে ঠিক সেভাবেই চরিত্রটিকে ব্যবহার করেছেন লেখক। একটা বন্দির হাড্ডিগুড্ডি ভাঙ্গা থেকে শুরু করে ব্যথা না দিয়েই সিনিয়র একজন সম্মানিত মানুষকে সবার সামনে বসিয়ে তার বাথরুমে যাওয়া আটকে রাখার মত সাইকোলজিকাল ওঅরফেয়ার অভিনব ছিল।

ফ্লিক ক্ল্যারিয়টের চরিত্রটি শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত দুর্দান্তভাবে উপন্যাসটি টেনেছে। তবে কয়েক জায়গায় চরিত্রটিকে লেখক কারন ছাড়াই অপব্যবহার করছেন। যেমন ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটারের পরকিয়া মূল কাহিনীর সাথে যতটা সংশ্লিষ্ট, ফ্লিকের মত একটা দুঃসাহসী মেয়ের ক্ষেত্রে ততটাই অপ্রয়োজনীয় ছিল। এই বিষয়টা ফ্লিকের নীতি নৈতিকতার সাথে পুরো উল্টো হয়ে যায়। আরেকটা বিষয় হলো, ইনভেশন পরিকল্পনার একজন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি এবং শারীরিক সমস্যা নিয়ে OSS মেজর পল চ্যান্সেলরের প্রেমের টানে নিজের কমান্ডপোস্ট থেকে ডুগডুগি বাজিয়ে ফ্রান্সে আসা মোটেও কাহিনীর সাথে মানানসই ছিল না। উপন্যাসের শেষে ফ্লিকের চরিত্রের পরিণতি কমন মনে হলেও আমার বেশি ভাল লেগেছে ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটারের বিষয়টা। কেন ফলেট থেকে আরও বাস্তবধর্মী সমাপ্তি আশা করেছিলাম। বইটা পড়া না থাকলে কেউ ভাবতে পারেন যে আমি কি বইটার খুব বেশি সমালোচনা করলাম নাকি বইটা আমার ভালো লাগেনি? না, জ্যাকডজ নিঃসন্দেহে উপভোগ্য তবে প্রিয় লেখকদের থেকে সবসময় আরো বেশি কিছু আশা করি আমি।


বাস্তবে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় ব্রিটিশরা ৫০ জন নারী সিক্রেট এজেন্টকে ফ্রান্সে পাঠিয়েছিল। এদের মধ্যে পার্ল উইদারিংটন‌ (কোড নেম Pauline) ব্রিটিশ S.O.E এর সেরা একজন এজেন্ট ছিলেন। এই এজেন্টদের ভিতরে ৩৬ জন যুদ্ধ থেকে বেঁচে ফিরেছিল, বাকিরা মারা যায়। সে সময় নারীদের মিলিটারি পদক দেয়ার কোনো নিয়ম ছিল না। ২০০৬ সালে পার্ল উইদারিংটনকে প্যারাসুট উইং দিয়ে সম্মানিত করা হয়। এই সম্মানসূচক ব্যাজ পাবার পর পার্ল বলেছিলেন, 'আমি ৬৩ বছর ধরে এটার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলাম।' কেন ফলেট সেই সময়ের কিছু সত্য ঘটনার আলোকে জ্যাকডজ লিখেছেন।
