I have always found Ken Follett too verbose but this book was an excellent fast read with a great female lead character. Flick Clairet is one of a select group of women helping the French Resistance during the final years of the Second World War. She is married to a French man, the leader of the resistance in Reims and in the opening sequence we see a group of them fail to overcome a telephone exchange that is crucial to the Germans. 

Several of the local resistance members are captured, tortured and a German intelligence officer is able to start unravelling the underground team there. He is a ruthless torturer although we also see his cultured side and his love for a Jewish mistress. He even gets terrible migraines when he has to torture people so Follett manages to create a villain who is still believable and not a caricature of the evil Nazi.

After the failure of the team, Flick is determined to get back to the exchange and blow it up, creating a critical gap in communications at the same time as the Allied forces invade. The timing is crucial and the book is basically her mission back to Reims in order to accomplish this task. The only way in is to recruit other women to act as an all-female team disguised as cleaners. In that way they can get into the exchange and blow up the communications. The women Flick recruits have been rejected by other services and are generally unsuitable, a ragtag bunch including a convicted murderer, a Cockney explosives expert thief, a lesbian aristocrat and a transvestite whose lover had been killed by the Germans. The journey the women take, the danger they get into is the crux of the story. No spoilers but as in real life, they don’t all make it.

Flick is characterized as a hard soldier in that she is able to shoot a traitor and and fight in hand to hand combat, but she also has a softer side and is able to love and think about marriage. I like these types of characters and she made the story believable. She and Dieter, the Nazi interrogator are by far the strongest characters in the book and it really was a battle between these two throughout the book.

Although you know that of course the Allies will win in the end, you still don’t know until the last pages whether the team will survive. I enjoyed the book, reading it on a windy, wild Auckland day in pretty much one sitting. It’s a thriller with an intelligent female heroine. Recommended!

This is another historical fiction by Ken Follett. It was published about 15 years ago. This time, it's a about the women of the French Resistance who attempt to help the allied evasion by going after a highly-guarded military target. One of the women is gay man who works as a cross-dressing performer and identifies as a woman. The author calls her female for the whole book.

Ken Follett is known for plots that tell quite a story. And he definitely did it with Jackdaws. I enjoyed this book a lot, primarily because it tells the story of a group of female spies playing their own version of cat-and-mouse with Gestapo agents and German soldiers. The characters are interesting, the plot is great and moves on rather quickly. In addition the women’s mission is very important for the allied invasion in Normandy. I think that the plot, the characters, the setting and how Follett tells this story are great, and Jackdaws has everything it takes to make this an exciting read.
Mind, there are some rather brutal scenes which I didn’t really like, but they were necessary as part of the plot.

Romanul incepe cu o dedicatie pentru cele 50 de femei care au fost trimise in Franta ca agenti secreti de catre Marea Britanie. Dintre ele doar 36 au supravietuit razboiului. Autorul dedica romanul acestor femei.
Cartea este despre secrete, spionaj, decizii cruciale si mult curaj. Toate aceste lucruri pot schimba definitiv viata cuiva.
In ceea ce priveste actiunea, ne aflam in 1944 si o avem in prim plan pe Felicity Clairet care este agenta britanica si face parte din organizatia secreta Divizia de Operatiuni Speciale, cunoscuta si ca "Armata secreta a lui Churchill". Acesta este un serviciu special de spionaj si sabotaj.
Ea si echipa ei, din care face parte si sotul ei Michel, se afla in Franta cu misiunea de a ataca cladirea in care nemtii au cea mai mare centrala telefonica din Europa. Misiunea esueaza, echipa ei este omorata sau capturata, sotul ei este impuscat si ea ramane sa raspunda singura pentru acest esec.
Cei care supravietuiesc sunt interogati de maiorul SS Dieter Franck. Acesta o admira, o vrea si doreste s-o invinga pe Felicity. Ea insa are un plan in care sa transforme esecul misiunii ei in succes: o echipa de agenti secreti alcatuita din femei care sa se infiltreze in centrala nemtilor, dandu-se drept femei de serviciu. Ce nu stie ea este ca Dieter afla despre planul ei si o asteapta.
Echipa de femei care se incropeste pe nepusa masa este una inedita alcatuita din: o aristocrata aroganta si infumurata, o ucigasa din inchisoare, o cocheta visatoare, o specialista in explozibil trecuta de prima tinerete si un cantaret transexual, specialist in telecomunicatii.
Am retinut si o declaratie de dragoste care mi s-a parut frumoasa:
"Ma declar vinovat. Sunt un tampit. Dar un tampit care te iubeste si-ti cere sa-l ierti de data asta, in caz ca n-o sa te mai vad niciodata."
Romanul are toate ingredientele unui thriller de spionaj si de razboi reusit, are femei curajoase si frumoase, barbati sarmanti, pericol, sex, arme, misiuni riscante, decizii inteligente, calculate si personaje simpatice.
In incheiere atasez cateva citate care mi s-au parut interesante:
"Femeile frumoase erau aidoma minunatelor tablouri impresioniste franceze pe care le colectiona: daca aveai unul asta nu insemna ca nu-ti mai doreai altul."
"Durerea dureaza atata timp cat vrei tu. Cand vei decide sa-i pui capat, se va opri."
"Ai observat, mama, ca barbatii nu-si dau uneori seama cand o fata e proasta de bubuie?"
"Ai grija de mine intr-o lume in care nimeni nu e protejat. Si acum cred doar in tine."

The saying, "My heart raced", has never been truer than when I read this book.
The historical accuracy makes this a breathless read when you know the atrocities of the Nazi's were real, that they're not just a figment of the author's imagination. Thank goodness for the resistance. Thank goodness for the bravery of the men and the women of the resistance and the Allied Forces.
An incredible story of bravery and of love and of persecution.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, spy stories, war stories.

টর্চার সেলে নির্যাতনের সময় বন্দীর চোখ বাঁধা থাকলে প্রত্যেকটা আঘাত আসে ভয়ংকর চমক হিসেবে আর প্রত্যেকটা আঘাতের মাঝের সময়টা কাটে প্রচন্ড উদ্বেগের মধ্যে। শ্যাতোর ইন্টারোগেশন সেলে নগ্ন অবস্থায় একটা খুঁটির সাথে বেঁধে রাখা হয়েছে মেয়েটাকে। বেকায়দাভাবে ঝুলছে এক হাত বোঝাই যাচ্ছে কাঁধ থেকে স্থানচ্যুত হয়ে গেছে তা। ইন্টারোগেশনের সময় পা ভেঙে দেয়াটা একটা ভালো আইডিয়া। প্রচন্ড ব্যথা পাবে বন্দি, বিশেষ করে নড়তে গেলে ভাঙ্গা হাড়টা যখন খোঁচা মারবে। এজন্য যত্ন করে লক্ষ্য স্থির করে সর্বশক্তি দিয়ে জায়গা মতো আঘাত করা হলো, লম্বা হাড়টা ভাঙার শব্দ শোনা গেল। বন্দীর অনুনয় বিনয় না শুনে স্টিলের ক্রোবারটা দিয়ে আবারো পায়ের হাড় ভাঙা যেখানে কাঁচা মাংস বের হয়ে আছে সেখানে মারা শুরু করা হলো। পাশের ঘরের বন্দীটি এখন একদম অন্য এক মানুষে পরিণত হয়েছে, ফুঁপিয়ে ফুঁপিয়ে কাঁদছে আর ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা করছে। 


জ্যাকডজ বইটার কাহিনী শুরু হয়েছে ১৭৯৩ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত এই শ্যাতোকে ঘিরে। একসময় ফ্রান্সের অভিজাত লোকদের জন্য তৈরি করা হলেও যুদ্ধকালীন সময়ে স্ট্র্যাটেজিক কারণে এই এক্সচেঞ্জটি নাজি জার্মানদের জন্য খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এই এক্সচেঞ্জের মাধ্যমে জার্মান হাইকমান্ডের সকল নির্দেশ বার্লিন থেকে উত্তর ফ্রান্সে আসে। মিত্রবাহিনী এ বিষয়টা খুব ভালোভাবেই জানে, এজন্য গত কয়েক সপ্তাহ ধরে শ্যাতোর উপরে ক্রমাগতভাবে বোমাবর্ষণ করা হচ্ছে। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সেই সময়ের ঘটনার কথা এখানে বলছি যখন নরম্যান্ডি ইনভেশন শুরু হতে মাত্র ১০ দিন বাকি। জার্মান ফিল্ড মার্শাল রোমেল তার সর্বোচ্চ শক্তি দিয়ে ইনভেশন ঠেকানোর চেষ্টা করছে। ‌এর ভিতরে ফ্রেঞ্চ রেজিস্ট্যান্সের দল শ্যাতোতে অবস্থিত জার্মান টেলিফোন এক্সচেঞ্জ এর উপরে হামলা করে বসে। রেজিস্ট্যান্সের অধিনায়ক জানতো এই টেলিফোন এক্সচেঞ্জ ধ্বংস করলে জার্মান হাইকমান্ডের সাথে ফ্রান্সে অবস্থিত নাজি বাহিনীর যোগাযোগ পুরোপুরি বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে যাবে আর যোগাযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে গেলে হিটলার তার রিজার্ভ আর্মি সময় মতো ব্যবহার করতে পারবে না। যুদ্ধের মোড় যে কোন সময় ঘুরে যেতে পারে যদি এই গেরিলা হামলা সফল হয়। নিজেদের প্ল্যান মত শ্যাতোতে হামলাও চালায় চৌকষ গেরিলারা কিন্তু পুরো হামলাটাই ব্যর্থ হয়। কিন্তু S.O.E এর মেজর ফ্লিক ছিল অন্য ধাতুতে গড়া এক মহিলা। সে ইংল্যান্ডে ফিরে গিয়ে আবারো একটা গেরিলা দল তৈরি করে। ভিন্ন ভিন্ন কাজে এক্সপার্ট ছয় জন নারীর গেরিলা দলটার নাম দেয়া হয় জ্যাকডজ। অন্যদিকে ফ্রেঞ্চ রেজিস্ট্যান্সের প্রথম অপারেশন চোখের সামনে প্রত্যক্ষ করে নাজি মেজর ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটার। একজন শিকারি যেমন আরেকজন শিকারীকে দেখলে খুশি হয়ে যায় রক্তের নেশায়, ফ্লিকের সাথে দেখা হওয়ার পর ডিটারের সেই দানবীয় নেশা জেগে উঠে।


কেন ফলেটের 'পিলার অব দ্য আর্থ' যদি কারো পড়া থাকে, রীতিমতো অবাক হবেন কি বিশাল পরিসরে দশকের পর দশকব্যাপি কাহিনি লেখায় ওস্তাদ তিনি। অথচ জ্যাকডজের পুরা কাহিনির ব্যাপ্তি মাত্র ১০ দিন। তবে স্বল্প সময়ের ভিতরেই লেখক বেশ বড় পরিসরে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের এই স্পাই থ্রিলারটি চিত্রায়িত করেছেন। উপন্যাসটির উল্লেখযোগ্য একটা বিষয় হলো এটা ফাস্ট বা স্লো পেসড কোনোটাই নয়, বাস্তবে একটা ঘটনা যেভাবে আগায় ঠিক সেরকম গতিতেই সামনের দিকে কাহিনী এগিয়েছে। যুদ্ধের সাথে পারিপার্শ্বিক পরিবেশ ফুটিয়ে তোলা হয়েছে নিখুঁতভাবে, এর সাথে লেখক চরিত্রগুলো বিল্ডআপ করেছেন বেশ সময় নিয়ে। যুদ্ধকালীন সময়ে গেরিলারা কিভাবে তাদের অপারেশনগুলো পরিচালনা করে, গুপ্তসংবাদ পাঠানো এবং সেগুলো ডিকোড করা, ছদ্মবেশ ধারনের মাধ্যমে এক দেশ থেকে আরেক দেশে এজেন্ট পাঠানো, পরিকল্পিতভাবে একটা সুরক্ষিত জার্মান সামরিক স্থাপনায় আঘাত হানার বিষয়গুলো চমৎকারভাবে ফুটিয়ে তোলা হয়েছে। একদিকে যেমন গেরিলারা তাদের মত পরিকল্পনা করে সামনে আগাচ্ছিল, অন্যদিকে তাদের পিছে জোকের মত লেগেছিল ফিল্ড মার্শাল রোমেলের সবচেয়ে সেরা একজন ইন্টেলিজেন্স অফিসার। 


উপন্যাসটা আমার কাছে সবচেয়ে উপভোগ্য লেগেছে ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটারের মতো দুর্ধর্ষ এবং ঠান্ডা মাথার গোয়েন্দা অফিসারের জন্য। জার্মানদের স্বভাবজাত তীক্ষ্ণ বুদ্ধি, শেয়ালের মত ধুরন্ধর আর যেখানে যে উপায়ে ট্যাকটিকস খাটিয়ে তথ্য আদায় করা দরকার সেখানে ঠিক সেভাবেই চরিত্রটিকে ব্যবহার করেছেন লেখক। একটা বন্দির হাড্ডিগুড্ডি ভাঙ্গা থেকে শুরু করে ব্যথা না দিয়েই সিনিয়র একজন সম্মানিত মানুষকে সবার সামনে বসিয়ে তার বাথরুমে যাওয়া আটকে রাখার মত সাইকোলজিকাল ওঅরফেয়ার অভিনব ছিল।

ফ্লিক ক্ল্যারিয়টের চরিত্রটি শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত দুর্দান্তভাবে উপন্যাসটি টেনেছে। তবে কয়েক জায়গায় চরিত্রটিকে লেখক কারন ছাড়াই অপব্যবহার করছেন। যেমন ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটারের পরকিয়া মূল কাহিনীর সাথে যতটা সংশ্লিষ্ট, ফ্লিকের মত একটা দুঃসাহসী মেয়ের ক্ষেত্রে ততটাই অপ্রয়োজনীয় ছিল। এই বিষয়টা ফ্লিকের নীতি নৈতিকতার সাথে পুরো উল্টো হয়ে যায়। আরেকটা বিষয় হলো, ইনভেশন পরিকল্পনার একজন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি এবং শারীরিক সমস্যা নিয়ে OSS মেজর পল চ্যান্সেলরের প্রেমের টানে নিজের কমান্ডপোস্ট থেকে ডুগডুগি বাজিয়ে ফ্রান্সে আসা মোটেও কাহিনীর সাথে মানানসই ছিল না। উপন্যাসের শেষে ফ্লিকের চরিত্রের পরিণতি কমন মনে হলেও আমার বেশি ভাল লেগেছে ফ্রাঙ্ক ডিটারের বিষয়টা। কেন ফলেট থেকে আরও বাস্তবধর্মী সমাপ্তি আশা করেছিলাম। বইটা পড়া না থাকলে কেউ ভাবতে পারেন যে আমি কি বইটার খুব বেশি সমালোচনা করলাম নাকি বইটা আমার ভালো লাগেনি? না, জ্যাকডজ নিঃসন্দেহে উপভোগ্য তবে প্রিয় লেখকদের থেকে সবসময় আরো বেশি কিছু আশা করি আমি।


বাস্তবে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় ব্রিটিশরা ৫০ জন নারী সিক্রেট এজেন্টকে ফ্রান্সে পাঠিয়েছিল। এদের মধ্যে পার্ল উইদারিংটন‌ (কোড নেম Pauline) ব্রিটিশ S.O.E এর সেরা একজন এজেন্ট ছিলেন। এই এজেন্টদের ভিতরে ৩৬ জন যুদ্ধ থেকে বেঁচে ফিরেছিল, বাকিরা মারা যায়। সে সময় নারীদের মিলিটারি পদক দেয়ার কোনো নিয়ম ছিল না। ২০০৬ সালে পার্ল উইদারিংটনকে প্যারাসুট উইং দিয়ে সম্মানিত করা হয়। এই সম্মানসূচক ব্যাজ পাবার পর পার্ল বলেছিলেন, 'আমি ৬৩ বছর ধরে এটার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলাম।' কেন ফলেট সেই সময়ের কিছু সত্য ঘটনার আলোকে জ্যাকডজ লিখেছেন।

Recomendou-se que recebesse a Cruz de Guerra, embora se dissesse que as mulheres estavam impossibilitadas disso, por essa razão atribuíram-lhe o título de membro civil da Ordem do Império Britânico, que ela devolveu, dizendo que «não fizera nada civil.»

Bem, este é daqueles que não dá muito em que pensar, mas serviu para me por a ler quase 500 páginas em dois dias e, certamente, deu para distrair de coisas mais sérias (e não, não sou insensível à ironia).
Inspirado numa história verídica sobre um grupo de mulheres que combateram ativamente na Segunda Guerra Mundial - com alguns apontamentos também a lembrar que na Resistência combateram muitas outras mulheres (tal como crianças, velhos, homossexuais e outros elementos grandemente marginalizados e esquecidos pela narrativa oficial), este livro é um thriller puro e duro, cheio de ação, momentos dramáticos, um grupo de heroínas sui generis - e uns quantos factos históricos bem apanhados ali pelo meio -, enquadrado pela ação das Operações Especiais Britânicas durante os finais da Segunda Guerra Mundial. No que concerne a detalhes, é tudo muito óbvio e muito cliché, mas suponho que os escritores a metro não se podem dar a grande luxos no âmbito da profundidade psicológica etc.
Não vou ser ingrata, aquilo que me trouxe a Ken Follett foi a necessidade de entretenimento: missão cumprida. No entanto, acho que se dispensavam as descrições de tortura detalhadamente gráficas - é preciso sadismo para a praticar, mas imagino que quem retira prazer da sua escrita/descrição não deva andar muito longe disso. E eu não gosto lá muito de servir de terapeuta a um sujeito que fatura milhões... Trate isso, Sr. Follett. Vá por mim.

Quite good, story line keeps you engaged making it a quick read. Yet another reference to Ravensbruck, a part of WWII history that should receive more attention.

Primeira experiência completa com um audiolivro. Foi interessante, melhor do que pensava, mesmo sendo uma versão em inglês (UK), será para repetir certamente.
Quanto à história, é mais um thriller típico da Segunda Guerra Mundial, de Ken Follett, que normalmente costumo gostar bastante. No entanto, este Jackdaws, apesar do ritmo acelerado e de algumas personagens interessantes, pareceu-me um pouco mais fraco do que os restantes que li.

Jackdaws could have been a very good World War II novel. It's about a group of women operatives (most of them criminals or malcontents) who are given a chance to serve their country and clear their records if they undertake a dangerous mission in France to blow up a Nazi communications center just as the D-Day invasion begins. Yes, the premise is very much a female Dirty Dozen.

The action and characterization of the book are okay but typical. There were just too many sex scenes. And the sad thing is those scenes were entirely unecessary. Follett has caved to the contemporary temptation of explicit sex. Too bad. Otherwise, it would have been better.
