Una din cartile mai vechi scrise de Ken Follet, care mi-a placut extrem de mult. O poveste destul de complicata, tipica autorului, dar cu personaje atat de clar conturate incat nu trebuie sa faci nici un efort sa ii tii minte pe toti, asa cum mi s-a intamplat in trecut la romanele sale de sine statatoare. Romanul are fictiune istorica, o lunga disputa pentru bani si crime, toate ingredientele necesare pentru a nu mai putea lasa cartea din mana.

Nos sumergimos en el Londres victoriano, en esta novela de Ken Follet, siguiendo las andanzas de la familia Pilaster. En el verano de 1867, en el colegio donde estudian Hugh y Edward Pilaster queda marcado por un accidente en la alberca, uno de los chicos que se estaba bañando ha fallecido, a pesar de los intentos de Edward por rescatarlo. O eso dice la versión oficial, pues Hugh no está seguro de lo que ocurrió. Pero ese día tuvo una noticia más, y es que su padre se había suicidado, marcando a Hugh como un lastre para su familia, pero él solo quiere demostrar su valía en la empresa familiar, el importante banco Pilaster. Por otro lado, Augusta, la madre de Edward, vive frustrada y llena de ansias de poder, necesita escalar en la aristocracia Londinense, y para ello no le importará manipular a quién sea para obtener lo que quiere. Tanto Hugh como Augusta tratarán de demostrarlo a lo largo de los años.
Tendremos varias voces en este libro, principalmente de dos de los protagonistas, Maisie Robinson y Hugh Pilaster, en especial de este, y en el lado villano, por decirlo así, tendremos a su tía ambiciosa Augusta Pilaster, y su compinche Miguel Miranda, el amigo íntimo de su hijo Edward. A pesar de que no es un libro corto, estaba totalmente enganchada, la forma de narrar de Follet es de mis favoritas, con descripciones de las situaciones y emociones de los personajes, del entorno y demás pero sin llegar a ser pesado (por lo menos para mí), haciendo envolvente la lectura y ya solo con el prólogo estaba absorbida. La trama, como he comentado, transcurre a lo largo de varios años por tramos, desarrollándose tramas de más tensión y misterio, pero también de ver qué pasa con el banco Pilaster (sin ser aburrido). Vemos el crecimiento tanto la ambición honesta de Hugh, como la ambición devoradora de Augusta, los anhelos de Maisie o los temores de Micky, desembocando en un final de los que nos tiene acostumbrados Follet. Me imaginaba que se darían ciertas situaciones pero eso no suele molestarme si la narración me gusta y es coherente. Abajo os dejo un micro spoilers para los que hayáis leído varios libros del autor.
Los personajes es una cosa que Ken sabe construir muy bien, así que por esa parte muy bien también. Sin duda mi favorito es Hugh, pero cómo están construidos los personajes de Augusta y Micky me encantan, ver la manipulación, extorsión y lo que sea con tal de llegar a donde quieran, tejido con maestría me fascina. Maisie también me gusta pero menos que los otros, tal vez porque sale menos que ellos. Como siempre en estos libros lo que me gusta es ver la evolución de los personajes, su desarrollo y crecimiento a lo largo de los años.
Así que si ya habéis leído al autor y os gusta, seguramente disfrutaréis de este libro. Si no habéis leído nada del autor pero os gustan las intrigas familiares, escenas subidas de tono y cierta violencia, aderezado con una narrativa envolvente seguramente también os guste esta novela.

I love a female villain, and this one is so machiavelic, so devious, so smart and cold...

"A Dangerous Fortune," which is one of Follett's earlier books, takes place in the mid-1800's in England. A tragedy takes place at a boarding school when a student mysteriously drowns. This is the beginning of years of treachery that impacts the lives of so many people. There's greed, lust, and murder...what could be better? This is an old fashion family saga that grabs you from the very beginning and keeps your attention until the very last page. I'm giving a 5 star rating because this book does everything a good book should: it was entertaining and provided hours of pleasure. I simply couldn't put it down! 
Reading a Ken Follett book is like turning a cold iron to the "cotton" setting.  It may take a while to heat up, but once it does, you can expect things to get dangerously hot.  And by hot, I mean goooood reading!


Ken Follett's books are long and have very multi-layered plots.  They are not for readers looking for instant gratification, as they are not fast reads.  However, they are SO worth the time invested.  The plot twists are unparalleled genius.


There's nothing I love more than a book that surprises me, and Follett does that every time.  I love how his "bad guys" get justice in the end, just not in the way you would expect.  His "good guys" always get what they deserve, but often not for many years.  I really enjoy following characters through twenty plus years of their lives.

Buena y entretenida trama. Hace mucho no leía a Follet, más creo recordar que sus personajes malos son malos y los buenos, buenos y hay algunos de ambos en esta novela...sin medias tintas. Si te gusta el autor, recomiendo esta historia.

Ler Ken Follett é sempre uma experiência incrível. Desde o enredo, à construção das personagens... consegue sempre cativar!

Para quem (como eu!) adora livros, séries, filmes, da ou sobre a época vitoriana, decerto que só pode adorar este romance de Ken Follett.
Uma ótima história para tempos de férias (ainda que não as minhas ainda).
Não sendo um livro recente, retrata uma época que, embora sendo muito estereotipada em tantos livros, tem uma magia persistente.
Quem aprecia Jeffrey Archer ou Julian Fellowes não pode deixar de ler e apreciar este livro.

Ken Follet has added another great book this novel, A Dangerous Fortune. His has a great nack for creating amazing characters showing many different aspects of human life, like manipulation, greedy, misery, deceiving, murder, political and amorous intrigues, etc., making the book a very entertaining reading.

The story takes place in the late 1800’s and starts with a tragic drowning of a student in an exclusive school named Windfield. A small circle of boys are directly or indirectly involved in the incident, and its aftermath initiates a history that will span three decades.

The story followings a banking family and the trials that they go through fighting for the top job in the bank. Hugh is the central character. A "poor" family member who has to fight for everything where is cousin Edward floats through life and would rather visit the brothels and drink than try and advance in the bank. Edward's mother and Hugh's Aunt, Augusta is one of those characters that you swear at everything she makes an appearance. me.

Dangerous Fortune is super read. Not on the same level as Pillars of the Earth, World Without End and The Fall of Giants but a great read with amazing characters. You won't be disappointed. I ended up going out and buying another Ken Follett book right after finished Dangerous Fortune. It already has me hooked.

A salacious, but fun read, A Dangerous Fortune has some truly diabolical characters. A middle aged, middle-class, ambitious woman and a slimy, unscrupulous young man make a pact with the devil and try to destroy everyone around them. They do a pretty good job for a couple of decades.

It's a wonder of a novel and definitely worth a read because of the creation of poor, young Maisie Robinson, who is outspoken and honest and sexy. She is not afraid to face life head on and gets ahead not by use of her body, but by use of her wits. Well done Ken Follett!

Ken Follet is indeed the best living story teller. Today nobody has the panache to write as he does!!!

Innanzitutto, GRAZIE Mondadori per aver lanciato quest'offertona su 5 libri di Ken Follett!! Mi ero già riproposta di recuperare un po' delle sue opere andando a ripescare negli scatoloni/libreria-improvvisata di mio padre.. Mi sono risparmiata qualche vecchio volume, magari anche un po' ingiallito!!

Parlando di "Una fortuna pericolosa" in particolare, posso dire che è davvero una bella storia! Tutta la narrazione ruota attorno alla famiglia Pilaster, soprattutto alla pecora nera Hugh che come tutti gli "eroi" di Follett è perseguitato dalla sfiga e circondato da nemici coi fiocchi (Augusta e il senor Miranda sono due personaggi davvero scritti bene e che si fanno odiare senza troppi sforzi!!).
Personalmente, mi sono appassionata subito alla storia e in pochi giorni sono riuscita a leggere le oltre 600 pagine del libro.. Non riuscivo a smettere di leggere!!

Lettura consigliatissima a chi già conosce Follett, ma soprattutto a coloro che vogliono avere un assaggio del suo stile prima di affrontare la "Century Trilogy"

Myslela som si, že lepší román ako Piliere zeme nebudem čítať, no Piliere moci sa mu naplno vyrovnajú.
Je to úžasný príbeh plný dynamiky, zvratov, napätia, lásky a v neposlednom rade biznisu.
Follett je bravúrny spisovateľ, má cit pre postupné dávkovanie deja a jeho gradáciu, postavy sú zaujímavé, do detailov vykreslené, je to akoby ste sledovali ich konanie naživo.
Tomuto sa hovorí viacgeneračný román.
