Vaig llegir aquest llibre fa mil anys (bé, mil anys no, però potser sí fa més de 15). Recordo que em va encantar i el vaig deixar a moltíssima gent, i casi tothom el va disfrutar molt. He aprofitat els moments de platja per tornar-lo a disfrutar i la veritat és que no m'ha decebut gens. La Chevalier escriu històries boniques, treballades i es nota que estudia molt les èpoques, religions i costums. Les dues linees narratives són interessants i això és un plus, ja que moltes vegades una es menja a l'altre i provoquen trams avorrits, pero aquí no és el cas. Dues dones que busquen el seu camí i que, més o menys, ho aconsegueixen.
Si heu llegit La noia de la perla i us va agradar, us recomano aquest llibre.

Inicia se manera lenta, me aburro en un principio y me cuesta continuar leyéndolo, digamos que una parte de mi se resiste y otra percibe que viene material interesante. En general considero que escribir una novela histórica es un reto para que funcione y no se lea como un libro de historia. Hay partes en las que funciona la manera de describir la rutina cotidiana y hay otras en que me parece plana la historia, hasta cierto punto forzada. Al inicio me intereso por Ella quien vive en la actualidad, una mujer americana casada que se muda a París y describe su vida en un nuevo continente, comienza a indagar sobre su pasado y se remonta a los ancestros, al mismo tiempo se desarrolla la historia de Isabella en época de los protestantes. Es un libro que desde mi punto de vista tiene una idea buena pero que no se desarrolla de manera adecuada provocando cambios de ritmos que provocan tedio e interés tan sólo pasando de un capítulo a otro. En ambas mujeres era posible desde el punto de vista femenino comprender por que se sentían de esa manera o sus motivaciones pero aún así en mi caso no senti conexión con ninguna de las dos por lo cual cuando acontecían eventos que normalmente en otras historias podrían conmoverme en este caso no sucedia y me sentía externa a lo que sucedía, a diferencia de otras ocasiones donde conecto con los personajes y el autor consigue ese efecto de inmersión. Ha sido un libro entretenido, enriquecedor porque aprendí sobre Francia,Suiza , sobre sus costumbres y sobre historia, lo cual me agrada. Este libro lo recomiendo para personas que quieran leer un libro que no es extenso, y que quieran aprender sobre historia. Pase un buen rato leyéndolo, en lo personal me habría gustado que el planteamiento despegara, sin embargo tono en cuenta que fue la primer novela que publico y para ser la primera me agradó, no he leído más libros de ella pero me daré la oportunidad, y quien sabe tal vez me sorprenda en esa ocasión.

Tracy Chevalier è una garanzia, non ho ancora trovato un suo romanzo che mi abbia fatto storcere il naso (i frutti del vento è quello che mi ha coinvolto di meno, ma non può dirsi brutto).
Questo mi ha regalato tante emozioni, tantissime. Perché in questo romanzo si parla di antenati, vite passate e i legami invisibili che ci collegano ad essi.
Perché anche se razionalmente non si spiega, ci sono fatti, persone o luoghi che fanno risuonare qualcosa in noi, o a cui sentiamo di appartenere.
Per me lo sono certi posti in Toscana, lo è S. i cui occhi raccontano storie antiche e mi richiamano a casa; alcune amiche che sono sorelle e anche alcuni quadri.
Proprio come per Ella, la protagonista di questo romanzo che ripercorre la storia e le vicende di Isabelle Tournier e della sua famiglia.
Ella stessa è una delle discendenti Tournier – Turner è la semplice versione americanizzata- e grazie al trasferimento del marito Patrick in un paesino della francia, inizierà una ricerca delle sue radici. Anche perché in lì non può esercitare la sua professione di ostetrica, soprattutto per via delle barriere linguistiche.
A guidarla però non sono le carte d’archivio o vecchi registri, sono soprattutto sogni, intuizioni ed angosce. Un mistero che vuol essere risolto, un’ anima che vuole la pace.
E ad aiutarla ci sono un bibliotecario un po’ scontroso(in apparenza)e che ama suonare il pianoforte, la collega Mathilde e il cugino Jacob che vive in Svizzera.
Patrick, il marito, rimane scettico, incapace di capire lo slancio che la porta a voler far luce sugli antenati, forse perché preso dal lavoro e maggiormente integrato nella nuova realtà che stanno costruendo.
Per Ella sarà un viaggio durissimo ma fondamentale per trovare la serenità che ha paerso col trasferimento in Francia.

In parallelo l’autrice racconta la storia di Isabelle
“si chiamava Isabelle e quando era bambina i suoi capelli cambiavano colore nel tempo che un uccellino impiega a chiamare il suo compagno.”
detta la Rossa per il colore dei capelli e come la gente chiamava la Vergine Maria del luogo.
Isabelle che è cattolica, ma quando la riforma di Calvino arriva a Mont Lozer a travolgere tutto ,deve vivere la sua fede di nascosto e i suoi capelli e le superstizioni che girano al riguardo.
Aiuta la madre che è la levatrice del villaggio e vive piuttosto serena, ma nel giro di poco tutto cambia e si trova sposata a Etienne Tournier: per lei è l’inizio di un incubo capeggiato dalla suocera, ma rasserenato solo dall’arrivo dei figli e in particolare di Marie.

Le due storie si alternano, prima lentamente, poi sempre più velocemente in un finale da pelle d’oca.

Come dicevo all’inizio quest’autrice per me è bravissima e sono rimasta sorpresa quando ho scoperto che questo è stato il suo primo romanzo! (io sono partita da “La dama e l’unicorno, che mi ha fatto innamorare di lei) e per fortuna mi sono rimasti da leggere due o tre dei suoi lavori, che tengo per i momenti di crisi.

Mi piace tanto il fatto che dia voce alle donne, che le renda protagoniste quando troppo spesso la storia le dimentica o le cancella.
In questo romanzo, poi, prevale il senso di angoscia: sia di Ella che di Isabelle, come se la Chevalier volesse sottolineare che anche se in epoche diverse, certe emozioni ,certe inquietudini, non hanno età. Sono retaggi che ci portiamo dentro e dietro, spesso inconsapevolmente.
È stato bello e faticoso seguire Isabelle, sentire la sua frustrazione, la sua impotenza: quanto avrei voluto che ci fossero stati marito e suocera sotto il basamento del camino! Quanto dolore nel constatare la tragedia e la follia.
Mi è piaciuto tantissimo il finale! E che la Bibbia (intesa proprio come oggetto fisico oltre che simbolico) abbia fatto da fil rouge.

Amore a prima vista per il pastore e per il venditore ambulante!
Che bei personaggi ha saputo creare questa grande autrice (tra l’altro pubblicata da una delle mie case editrici preferite, la Neri Pozza).

Chi ama i romanzi storici e le grandi storie di donne non può perderselo!

Oh this was a credulity stretch! Beautifully written but borders on fantastic. The audio version was well done.

A fascinating book that got me hooked after only a few pages. It was compelling, I wanted to learn what happened to Isabelle and her family, but also about Ella and her journey in France. Her new home.
Thevswitching between then and now I think was well done, it felt like Ella was taking the same path Ella was.

Liked this book like I did the others I read by her.

Det er jo altid skønt at læse en bog, når der er inkluderet sætninger på fransk, og jeg forstår det! Jeg lærte også en del om fransk historie (både om religionskrigene og den overtro, der lå under (ha...) områdets religion.

Der var mange ting, der skete meget hurtigt; som om alt for meget skulle ske på for kort tid (men det er nok bare fordi, jeg er vant til fantasyserier, hvor handling og udvikling er spredt ud over flere sider i stedet for to handlinger på én bogs plads). Især i Ellas forhold til de to mænd...

Der var også flere steder, hvor jeg undrede mig over, at nutidens storyline vidste noget meget specifikt om fortidens storyline, selvom det ikke burde være noget, der kunne blive overleveret i 'naturlige' forhistoriske levn.

Andre ting - som drømme og hårfarve og lignende - er simpelthen for tilfældigt til at kunne være realistisk. Hvis det havde været historisk fantasy fiktion, så ville det fungere helt fint, men det er det ikke, så det fungerer ikke helt fint. Den eneste mulige forklaring er reinkarnation af Isabelle i Ella.

Jeg elskede idéen om, hvad der skete (samme sted, samme familie, samme navne, opklaring af et mysterie...), og jeg forventede ikke det store af bogen, så jeg er tilfreds med at have læst den :).

Having never read Chevalier’s work I was very pleased with this novel, which is her first. The interesting thing to me was that the story took place at two different times in history but in the same geographic area. The first chapter introduces us to Isabelle, a girl who lives in France in the 1600s during a religious upheaval. Isabelle is seen as odd by her town because of her red hair, which was uncommon at the time. In chapter two we meet Ella, an American who has moved to France with her husband. Over the course of the novel Ella searches out her family history and finds that her family originated near where she now lives. The story is historical fiction while also discussing changes in relationships, personal revelations, and major life changes for many of the characters. I especially found the story changes by chapter interesting, and the way that Chevalier integrates the two main characters’ stories toward the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in historical fiction and world literature. I would suggest that someone who does not know European religious history well read the Historical Note at the end before beginning the story though.

One of my most favourite books ever!

This book, which I believe Tracy Chevalier wrote before Girl With a Pearl Earring, reminded me an awful lot of The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve. It uses the same concept of alternating a historical plot with present day events, and both modern heroines are facing similar issues.

The modern story follows Ella, a woman with French ancestry who moves to France because of her husband's work. They decide to live in a small French town and Ella gets involved with a local librarian while researching her geneology. The "flashback" sequences follow Isabelle, who has married into a Calvinist family who does not completely accept her because of her red hair, profession as a midwife (Ella is also a midwife), and her loyalty to the virgin Mary (Calvinists were strictly opposed to any vestiges of Catholic "intermediary" saints, especially Mary).

The Virgin Blue starts out with fairly long chapters clearly separated into medieval and current time periods, but at the denoument the events are blended together in a rapid succession that was a little disorienting, but suited the narrative, since the events themselves were confused.

There were some hints at the supernatural in the form of mysterious connections between Ella and other female descendents of Isabelle that were never fully explored. I would have liked either more of this, making it a true ghost story, or more ambiguity, with more plausible "rational" explanations.

It's been a long time since I couldn't tear away from a book, so I loved every second of reading this one. On the other hand, I'm still not sure how I feel about open endings, I don't want to have anymore questions after finishing a book and then scour google for answers that are also ambiguous. It's not always the case, though. Overall, looooved this book, and not only because the main character resembles me in more ways than one.
