Started off interestingly enough - 2 parallel stories, interesting premise, but then the writing seemed to deteriorate and get less fluid. The characters appealed to me less and less and it just got weird.

Questo è il libro d’esordio di Tracy Chevalier, nota scrittrice che ha avuto successo con i suoi romanzi storici.

Questo romanzo è la storia di due donne. Una nel presente, Ella che è alla ricerca delle sue origini in un paese straniero e una nel passato Isabelle, che cerca di vivere la sua vita e la sua religione in un mondo che per principio le è contro, già solo a partire dal colore dei suoi rossi capelli.
Già in questo primo romanzo si nota subito quale sia la dote della Chevalier.

La storia del presente è un po’ banalotta e superficiale. Più volte mi ha fatto alzare gli occhi al cielo e non vedevo l’ora finisse.

La parte al passato invece è molto affascinante ed evocativa.

Per quanto sia una lettura piuttosto scorrevole, non sono rimasta troppo convinta dal tutto. Mi rimane solo la consapevolezza che Chevalier ha fatto bene a continuare la sua esperienza sui romanzi storici dedicate alle figure femminili perché è proprio il suo.

I loved the Girl with the Pearl Earring so had very high hopes for this - I think you can tell that it was her first book, some of the bits and pieces seemed to carry over into GWAPE themes wise.

I didn't mind the split between time periods, but found that the writing in the present day seemed forced and the dialogue was really unnatural (kind of giving badly written TV show dialogue, provoked a cringe a few times). But the half in the past was much more subtle, far easier to be interested in, and the ending was obscure but tied together well.

Overall, GWAPE is a much bigger slay, but if you like a bit of painting/witchcraft/childbirth/disgusting 16th century men/religious turmoil/stereotypical French people then this will be a mega slay for you!

First I tried the audiobook and soon gave it up as the reader was quite irritating the way she faked a French accent. So I thought I would like the ebook better, but I am not fond of dual timelines and found Ella very superficial and annoying. I would have given up long ago, only I am a fan of Tracy Chevalier and am quite disappointed.
I am giving up, 50% into the book. Life is too short!
