Just re-read this in order to get out of a slump...ended up typing my version of Haw's points and posting it at my desk at work. I'm visualizing new cheese, I'm running the maze...I will find new cheese.

You can read Who Moved My Cheese? in an hour or lesser.

It took me a while to understand the impact of the simple yet powerful message, given that I in high school and I didn't believe that short books could be important and I was skeptic about the whole self help genre. But the message somehow stayed with me and kept me thinking.

The book is divided into two parts, a short story and then the relevant message. The basic theme of the books is how to deal with change and the importance of the right attitude in life. While it is usually classified as a business subject, it is equally possible for anyone if us, including the high school me, to implement them in our life. Currently there is a talk of a possible sequel to this one!

Final thought: Simple and relevant message

This was recently gifted to me, by my financial advisor, post my recent tough lay-off. A simple story that many might read and think, well that’s obvious. However it’s sometimes good to read basic concepts again as we, as humans, tend to make things more complex than needed and in today’s multi-tasking mess reading a book can help people focus on a concept better than an online article.

My take away, after reading many of the pages twice, is this specific line:
”What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”

This resonates with me for a couple reasons. When people ask me about my ‘dream job’ I tell them none of them make enough money to pay the bills. For example: writing book reviews, copy editing or beta reading fiction, stitching, creating stitching patterns, or in a crazy moment I’ll consider writing a book.
I’ve been recently challenged, as I don’t have to immediate rush to get a new job since lay-off, to really think about getting “closer” to the industries I want to be a part of as a data analyst (what I have been doing for a living).
It’s an intriguing thought. Although I don’t want to leave my city; and I live in the wrong place for publishers to give me a job.

There are lots of pieces of this very short story that people can take away. For me, today, this was mine. But in a few years it might be something else. At less than 90 pages it’s an easy read to revisit any time you are at a crossroads or feeling a change or push coming on.
I’m pleased to add it to my personal library and lend it out to others who might benefit. Maybe this time, or sometime in the future, it will change my life by asking myself about ‘the cheese’.

Make it pizza.

Two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two little people, Haw and Hem, are enjoying a perfect blissful life, until one day someone moves their Cheese. Oh no! What will become of them now???

A nice allegorical story about embracing change.

I think this could’ve been a lovelier 4 star message if it would’ve been just a tad less allegorical and repetitive; and the ending far less corporate.

The movie clip is perfect adaptation. Right to the point, 15 min, without all the excessive repetition and almost none of the corporate stuff.

Que sea pizza.

Dos ratones, Sniff y Scurry, y dos pequeñas personas, Haw y Hem, disfrutan una perfecta feliz vida, hasta que un día alguien les mueve el Queso. ¡Oh no!

This is a book about victimized lower and middle class mice trapped in a corporate capitalist maze, forced by The Man to scurry around, looking for "The Cheese" (salary, 401K, maybe even decent PPO or HMO). Then The Man (maybe Boeing, maybe American Airlines, maybe Monsanto--whoever) MOVES THE CHEESE because it interferes with his quarterly earnings reports or THE CHEESE will be more cost effective if it is shipped to China or Rwanda where labor is cheaper. So what are the mice supposed to do? Are they supposed to unionize, or protest the WTO, or elect people who will enforce antitrust laws in this country! oh, Nooooo! They are supposed to change directions and start running around looking for THE CHEESE in some other part of the maze. Inferior quality CHEESE, no doubt--maybe more of a PROCESSED CHEESE FOOD, without the employer-matched 401K, sans health insurance. Scurry, scurry, little mice! Find your CHEESE before Wall Street and NASDAQ move it again! They are pretty quick to move THE CHEESE and they don't care if you starve!
That is why this book is horrid.
But I'm not bitter.

"What would you do if you weren't afraid?" - Haw

"Who Moved My Cheese" is a very short booklet, and an inspirational call for people who know, or may not know, that they need change but refuse getting out of their comfort zones simply because, they are afraid of what's hidden for them in the future; the unpredictable.

Surprisingly the writer describes literally a situation I am going through right now. Sometimes we need to adapt to changes, which is NOT EASY -from experience- but some other times, change must be initiated from within; Two faces of the same coin. I am glad I am already on my journey to find a new cheese!

It's a short read, might not be a thought-provoking one but a refresher on why it's important to adapt to the change.

This was another motivational book assigned in a group at work. This rather famous book at least lives up to the hype surrounding it. Not that its message is particularly unique or surprising. Though I was surprised with how short it is. And how little real text there is on each page, for that matter, with entire pages devoted to a short bullet-point sentence.

That length is key to the punch the book delivers. Because the essential point is rather simple (in the way good points generally are). As it stands, I think the extended metaphor gets a bit tattered around the edges and I'm not sure what to do with the frame testimonial group. So I think it could probably have been even more compact if it had tried.

At any rate, the central message that "change happens and accepting that and moving on with as little drama as you can manage makes life measurably better" is a good one and I think the metaphor is a strong one, even if cheesy (yeah, couldn't resist). Life as a maze and desirable achievements/goals as cheese works, as do the four personalities depicted, not least as a good illustration of how we make simple things complicated because of our expectations and fear. In fact, it's good enough that I'd strongly recommend using this book/story to convey the message over trying to bullet-point or summarize it. The images are strong and memorable and I think that plays a role in why this book is near-iconic in our cultural hind-brain.

The frame group is more problematic, but then, so is the problem they're trying to solve. Like any simple but crucial principle (like being kind or forgiveness or honesty) the real challenge is going to be in figuring out how to apply it in real life—i.e. that space where principles sometimes clash or are opposed by others. This section works as both underscoring testimony and a bit of a how-to in ways that may or may not find resonance with readers. It's the weakest part of the book, and one that I think could have been better. I found the fictional group of friends unrelatable and with cases that have little resonance with me on a personal or professional basis. I hesitate to say what methods might have been better, but I can think of several that I'd like to put in front of a focus group. Of course, for all I know, that's exactly what Dr. Johnson and Kenneth Blanchard did and my ideas all suck...

At any rate, I'm going to rate this at four stars for being simple but profound and making things relatable enough that I can see at least some ways I'd like to try applying the principle depicted. Which is a really strong rating for my generally cynical perspective on motivational/self-help books.

Heard it all before. One thing that's always constant in life is change and we should adapt to it to be successful in our career and relationships.
