I will give this book no star rating.

So, yes, if you find a Japanese version in a dumpster and you think it will help you practice Japanese go for it!

It could be good for adult education too.

I could see someone with limited literacy who is taking a night class in business gaining a lot from this book, even if its oversimplified take on change may be harmful. People in hard luck environments sometimes need super simple stories. I've taught this population of students before and getting them to read anything is a challenge.

Though again, the super simplicity of it could be harmful.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" -- a fantastic five-star book that addresses the philosophical reality of change much more elegantly -- had "Mostly Harmless" stamped on the cover.

What should be stamped on this book's cover?
*Read at Your Own Risk!
*May be hazardous to philosophical and emotional well-being.

I can't say it's mostly harmless, but it is substantially less harmful than tobacco.

In short,
1. Don't have anyone read this book as a replacement for a substantial book on any topic.
2. If you need a book about change, read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
3. But perhaps (75/25) it is better for learners who would usually read no book at all.
4. I dare you to read this book side by side with "The Grapes of Wrath" and not hate this book. Spoiler alert, the little people in Steinbeck's novel never find the cheese.
5. No one should ever have to accept this book as a substitute for a coherent explanation for why they are being fired.
6. And, it is certainly less harmful than tobacco.

This book is good. It is a simple story with a big message. There are two mice named Sniff and Scurry and two little people named Hem and Haw. They are all on a search for cheese. Cheese is a medaphor for what is good in our lives such as work, prosperity and what makes you happy. The book helps us deal with the concept of change.
Enjoy and Be Blessed.

Spencer Johnson

Change or get run over !

A great many people have recommended this particular one to me; I did not read.

We might be the most evolved species on the planet but sometimes we do over-process. Adapting and forecasting change lurking around the corner is mark of sheer greatness.

The best quote perhaps was curbing the wrong interpretations that might be drawn out : that you should try behaving in a new way in the same relationship. Do not change the person but innovate your habits. If you love your partner, let them know about it in a million different ways that change everyday.

Novelty is what keeps things moving.

The story is perfectly written and takes up one hour of your life but may just give you a knowledge of a lifetime. I can see these terms being recited to people in the company I work or the football teams I lead.

And I quote,

n
"Keep moving whilst riding a bicycle. Else you fall down."
n

Keep your senses sharp. Sniff the changes and scurry to action.

And of course, Be Worldclass like the very book itself.

Verdict : Spencer Johnson hits the bulls-eye in a 60 minute book.

I blamed this book during the time I was jobless because it was this book that compelled me or I guess goaded me to finally make the decision to quit my job what with its constant glaring advice to go for change. But I also have this book to thank for because if it were not for this book, I would have stuck with my old job and I would not have reached the place I am at now. So, thank you book for coming along my way. By the way, I love cheese.:)

A classic book I wish I read a long time ago. The premise: Adapt and change with life!

The 4 characters :
--------------
Sniff - always sniffing for negative changes in his present situation

Scurry - always runs over to the next possibility without delay

Hem - doesn’t want to see the changes coming until it’s close to too late

Haw - complains, feels entitled to the past, can’t laugh at his mistakes, and doesn’t change and do better. He fails.

Some pointers:
--------------------------
* Change is natural

* Change can only hurt/surprise you if you weren’t looking for it

* Old beliefs do not leave you to new prizes

* Change can help you…. so embrace change.

* Noticing the small changes early helps you adapt to future big changes

* Let go of the past, and adapt to the present

* You will find a new prize… you must. There’s tremendous abundance out there, and only loss where you are right now.

* Always keep your running shoes nearby: You will need to run again.

* The fastest way to change is to laugh at your folly… then you can let go, and move on

* Keep life simple, don’t over-analyze things. When the prize starts to go away, don’t waste time… move! Don’t complicate yourself w/fearful beliefs

* Adapt faster… if you don’t adapt in time, you might as well not adapt at all

* There are always new prizes out there, and you are rewarded with them when you go past your fear

* In addition to finding new prizes, you will find the better part of yourself

* "Sniff" out for changes in your present situation early. "Scurry" to protect yourself from them. Do not "Hem" and "Haw".

* Change is happening everywhere, and you will do better if you adjust to it quickly. You will do best if you anticipate it in advance and move now.

* Never be afraid to adapt to change. It can be fun! It also keeps you young.

* When you drop old behaviors and you adopt new ones, you get new prizes. The prizes are just an outside reflection of who you now are inside.

Quotes :
---------------------------------------
"If you realize new cheese is better, then it's fun to change."

"If we can laugh at ourselves, that's the best sign of mental health."

"Once you get clear on what works and what doesn't, you can get pretty decisive."

"A great way to adapt to change is to get some people on your team."

"The biggest reasons businesses don't change faster is because not a lot of people want to change."

"The minute you realize you'll get something better, of course you'll want to change."

"You can't be imagining something better and be afraid at the same time."

"The ability to anticipate change is the respect of the peaks and valleys of life."

"If you manage the peaks - be grateful, humble, realistic - you will know how to come out of the valleys faster. If you're really wise, you're grateful of your valleys."

"Today change is more rapid and on a larger scale, and the people who are going to win and are winning today are those who develop change skills."

The Change Skills :
--------------
1. Sniff out changes.
2. Take new actions.
3. Laugh at yourself.
4. Have fun adapting.
5. Always ask yourself "What would I do if I wasn't afraid?"
6. Be afraid of only what will happen if you don't change. "Only the paranoid survive."- Andy Grove

This book is one of the most referenced C-Suite 'suggested reads' I have ever come across. If for no other reason read it so that you and the CEO have something to talk about at the yearly company BBQ. This is a great book to read before the company Christmas party - will open up doors of conversation that will get you noticed!
