It's been a long time since I read a novel by Noah Gordon. After reading The Physician, I was sure I would read many more but time has passed and other titles have snuck in. Shaman is a continuation of the story from The Physician but not a sequel. It is the story of the Cole family in the period around the Civil War. Since I am reading books set in the 19th century this month, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to get back to Gordon.

The story begins with a man named Shaman on train heading home because his father (Pa) has died. It's April 22 1864. We find out that Shaman is not an Indian in spite of the name, he is deaf, and he is a doctor. Shortly after his arrival home the reader is taken into the back story about Pa (Rob J Cole) and his family starting in March 1839. It is a fascinating story and as I finished the book I was amazed at how much of those lives we had covered. There are wonderful characters, white, native, Jews, Christians, Quakers, pioneers, good guys and bad ones. There's considerable history, some adventure, and a mystery that haunts Rob J through most of the story.

The book was published in 1992 but has lost none of its timeliness. In fact, the factionalism seems to mirror these times to some extent!

"Šaman" je jedno predivno djelo, topla obiteljska priča koja se djelomično nastavlja na "Iscjelitelja" istog autora. Opet je riječ o Robu J.-u, liječniku s posebnim darom koji ovaj puta živi u 19. stoljeću i to u Americi. No, odmah moram napomenuti ono što me najviše iznenadilo - taj "liječnički dar" zapravo uopće ne igra veliku ulogu u ovoj priči. Ovo je priča o naseljavanju američkog zapada, o Indijancima, američkom ratu između sjevera i juga te sudbini naših likova koji su upleteni u svjetovna zbivanja. Ovo je priča o ambiciji, snagi volje i obiteljskoj tradiciji. Ostala sam zapanjena šarolikim likovima, mjestima kao i radnjom koja se kreće od izuzetno dirljive do izuzetno tragične. Šaman mi je apsolutno najdraži lik u ovoj priči, ali više od toga vam ne bih htjela odati. Velika preporuka za ljubitelje povijesnih romana, ali i velikih obiteljskih, epskih saga. Ipak je riječ o poprilično velikoj knjizi od "samo" 600tinjak stranica. smile emoticon 5 zvjezdica!

Aunque el libro sigue la dinámica de el primero, ambos son más costumbristas que referentes a la medicina, en el sentido de que, aunque la vida de los protagonistas gira alrededor de la medicina, en ambos libros te describen más su día a día (incluyendo tratar pacientes) que las novedades médicas en sí (que también salen).

El problema del libro, a mi parecer, es que ha perdido la esencia de novedad del primero. Me refiero a que en el primero estamos en los albores de la medicina moderna (más o menos) y en este ya se han asentado las bases y, aunque, obviamente, se siguen haciendo descubrimientos (me gusta especialmente lo de la asepsia y antisepsia), para mí, no tienen lo novedoso del primer libro (y su enfermedad del costado, por ejemplo).

Por otro lado, este libro está situado en los años de la guerra de Secesión y, siendo sincera, las guerras y la historia de España me interesan, las de América, no. Y la verdad es que todos los capítulos que versaban alrededor de la política y de la propia guerra en sí, se me hicieron muy pesados (excepto, quizás, en algunos momentos que te hablaban de cosas más médicas).

Mención a parte merecen las mujeres y su protagonismo (nulo), así como el trato que Noah Gordon hace de ellas. La violación era totalmente innecesaria y no aporta absolutamente nada. Además a este señor no parece quedarle claro que las mujeres (incluso en esa época) pueden ser fuertes e independientes y no solamente sumisas y actuando al ritmo de sus maridos. Y las pocas que aparecen un poco independientes y fuertes cambian más que una veleta.
Y por favor, no hablemos de las escenas romántico/sexuales del libro, a cada cuál más patética (y por supuesto, donde solo importa el placer del hombre). Me huele a rancio.

A pesar de todas las cosas negativas, y que me hicieron bajarle la puntuación casi desde el principio, el libro en general me ha entretenido. Las partes que tratan la medicina y su avances son lo que más me gusta, así como las escaramuzas que hacían algunos de los (mal) llamados médicos y que ambos protagonistas (padre e hijo) miraban con verdadero pavor.
Y, siendo realista, las partes que iban sobre el hijo (Chamán) son, también, de las que me han gustado bastante, especialmente, los últimos capítulos (quitando la parte amorosa) y son lo que me hacen dudar en esa media estrella.

Книга немного расстроила. Нет той возвышенности, той одухотворенности, как в первой части. Нет той жажды знаний, открытий, того всеобъемлющего понимаю, что благодаря таким врачам зарождалась и развивались медицина. Книга более современная что ли. Конечно, времена в ней описаны другие, но все-таки это 19 век.
Честно скажу, что ожидала большего. Ждала, что меня снова охватит трепет перед настоящими лекарями.
Нет, Шаман и его отец - истинные врачи, потомки того Лекаря Коула. Они не оставят без помощи даже убийцу, даже того, кого они презирают в душе. Но разбавление многими другими линиями и событиями мешает тому ощущению невероятного восхищения лекарями, которое было у меня во время прочтения первой части, за что я и оценила книгу на 4.
Я понимаю, что во многим есть и вина моих личных предпочтений: ну никогда мне не был близок Купер с его индейцами, или описание войн. Все-таки много внимания автор уделил в этой книге именно жизни индейцев, в частности, племени сауков, а также, Гражданской войне ��ежду Севером и Югом. Хотя я просто обязана признать, что работа автором проделана колоссальная, за что ему отдельное спасибо.
Кроме того, есть в книге и четкая детективная линия. К чести автора, я с огромным нетерпение ждала разгадки, хотя бывали моменты, когда казалось, что тайна так и останется тайной.
Да, книга это своеобразный микс. Если вы любите книги о войнах, об индейцах, детективы и одновременно хорошую художественную выдумку - вам обязательно понравится.
Ну а я все-таки начну читать заключительную часть трилогии :)

Un excelente libro.

Kas vaikystėje ir (ar) paauglystėje mėgote knygas apie indėnus arba nuotykines knygas, kuriose įsikuriama naujose vietovėse, tiems tikrai patiks. Čia ir JAV pilietinis karas, ir tuometinė medicina, ir šiek tiek saukų genties ritualų, truputis kriminalo ir keršto, daug tikėjimo ir meilės.

No es fácil ir a rebufo de un bestseller como El médico y conseguir salvar los muebles.
Noah Gordon no solo logra salir airoso de ese reto, sino que es capaz de construir otra historia igual de atractiva que la que abrió la saga.

Cambio de escenario (América), cambio de época, cambio de Doctor Cole... pero el mismo don curativo.

Hay partes que pueden resultar más densas, pero el mensaje de superación que salpica la novela lo compensa con creces.

Das Buch ist zwar äußerlich keine Schönheit aber auf jeden Fall lesenswert!
Eigentlich ist das auch gar nicht die Art Buch, die ich sonst mag aber mir hat der Medicus gefallen und ich habe es lange genug im Bücherregal ignoriert.

Die deutlichen und klaren Darstellungen zum amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg und der Vertreibung und Verfolgung der Indianer sind toll mit der Familiengeschichte der Coles verbunden.

Ich mag Gordons Schreibstil, der schafft es einen in die Zeit zu entführen und gestaltet die Geschichte interessant und unterhaltsam obwohl sie stellenweise leicht langatmig wird.
Kommt zwar nicht ganz an den Medicus heran, ist aber fast genauso gut.

Mit diesem Buch ist Noah Gordon ein wirklich großer Wurf gelungen. War der Medicus schon recht ansprechend, so hat er hier das Thema nochmals aufgegriffen und eine noch bessere Fortsetzung geschrieben.

Der Roman spielt in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ein Nachfahre des im Medicus beschriebenen Rob J. Cole verfasst ein Pamphlet gegen die englische Krone und muss daher seine Heimat Schottland verlassen. Er ist wie viele aus seiner Familie mit der Gabe seines Ahnen gesegnet - er fühlt wenn die Lebensenergie aus jemanden schwindet. Und ebenso wie so viele andere in der Familie ist er Arzt geworden mit der Liebe zur Schafzucht. Er flieht also wie schon angedeutet in die U.S.A. wo er bald Richtung Westen aufbricht um als Landarzt zu arbeiten. Er trifft dort zwei Frauen, die sein Leben beeinflussen sollen. Eine Schamanin des Sauk-Stammes zu der er eine platonische Beziehung aufbaut, und eine Frau die einen Sohn in die Ehe mitbringt und ihm einen leiblichen Sohn schenken soll. Dieser Sohn ist es der immer "Schamane" gerufen wird - er wird zur zweiten Hauptperson des Romans. Das Buch fließt also weiter mit sehr viel Handlung und mündet direkt in den amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg, wo der pazifistische Schotte als Arzt an der Seite der Nordstaatler in den Einsatz geht. Sein Stiefsohn jedoch steht auf der Seite der Gegner, und der "Schamane" schafft es an eine medizinische Hochschule - trotz seiner Taubheit.

Eine sehr schön erzählte Geschichte, viele Handlungsströme und viele Informationen über die damalige Zeit. Besser als im Medicus gelingt es Noah Gordon seine Erzählstimme zur Wirkung zu bringen - und er ist auch glaubhafter. War der Rob J. Cole des Medicus noch zu aufgeklärt, so ist der Rob J. Cole dieses Buches, eine Person die man sich in diese Zeit geboren gut vorstellen kann. Besser als im Medicus gelingt es dem Erzähler seinen Personen Tiefe zu geben. Wem der Medicus gefallen hat, dem wird wahrscheinlich auch dieses Werk gefallen.

gordon offers two fictionalized generations of doctoring on the Illinois frontier from 1839 to 1865, covering such medical history as the advent of hygiene and anesthesia. Rob J. Cole, political agitator in Scotland facing banishment to Australia, decides to migrate to the US. A doctor, he lands in Boston and can find work only in the Irish ghetto, making hovel calls for a charity. Disillusioned with the politics of the charity and intrigued with Indians, he heads west, stopping in Illinois at Holden's Crossing. Rob finds his Indians in the Sauks, who have fled the reservation and are now starving nearby. He treats and feeds them, becoming their ``white shaman,'' and eventually Makwa- Ikwa, their healer, goes to work with him. He travels the countryside, snipping off fingers and enlisting household help to pinch off spurting arteries. He removes kidney stones from a recluse named Sarah, who has holed up because she thinks she's dying from cancer. After he removes the stones, she blooms, and they marry. Sarah gives birth to a boy, and Makwa tags him ``Little Shaman.'' At age five, Shaman develops scarlatina and loses his hearing, a disability that makes his road to a medical practice difficult. Both father and son end up doctoring during the Civil War, the carnage of which is graphically described. The story moves too fast to develop either characters or scenes deeply, but it's a good read and has a refreshing approach to the frontier as part of a larger culture, not an isolated place where people did nothing but murder each other.

I was reading this sweeping saga when America's democracy was threatened. What a coincidence! This is a story if a deaf child's growing up into a doctor in the 1800's during the American civil war. I had devoured the first part of the Cole trilogy (The Physician) and then this. Highly recommended for historical fiction lovers and especially a wonderful read for medical historical fiction lovers like me.
