Creo que es la primera vez que doy una puntuación tan baja, y que sea precisamente para un libro de Noah Gordon me duele bastante. La historia no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con la sinopsis. Empiezas a leerlo esperando encontrarte ese "comité de la muerte", pero en lugar de centrarse en los casos médicos, la trama gira en torno a la vida de los médicos y cirujanos. La verdad es que no me hubiese importado de no ser porque me resultó muy difícil empatizar con los personajes y seguir cada una de sus historias. Siento que no he llegado a conocerlos en profundidad y que he echado un vistazo por encima a sus vidas. Noah Gordon es uno de los autores que más aprecio, pero sinceramente, este no es un libro que recomendaría.

It was very good. Not as good as Gordon's "The Physician," but still captivating. I like his style of writing and presenting the story. I learned several new words which is a plus for me. I would recommend reading it.

El autor es uno de mis favoritos, aunque esta novela si fue una verdadera decepción, yo tuve la sensación al iniciar la lectura de entrar a la mitad de una obra de teatro y cuando terminé el libro es la misma sensación de abandonar dicha obra de teatro cuando aun no cae el telón.

Es una novela de estilo coral con un ritmo lento y cansino falto de un adecuado contexto, en ciertas partes se tiene la sensación de que el autor desea terminar su trabajo de manera rápida, deja algunos detalles al descubierto, con personajes sin capacidad de reflexión y problemas cotidianos sin resolver.

Es notable que no utiliza la medicina para dar datos o situaciones morbosas, pero eso es algo que el autor nunca ha hecho, sin embargo, los libros de más de 400 páginas merecen tener un poco más de contenido.

A captivating look at what went on many years ago (the 60's) in hospitals. This novel addresses the social and ethnic issues of the times in what was once a male-dominated arena. Good read! Looking forward to more books by this author!

Noah Gordon no decepciona en este libro. Aunque por su título muy posiblemente se esperaba algo macabro y oscuro; pero realmente trata de la vida de 3 médicos, narrado por su punto de vista sus amores, su vida en el hospital, sus apuraciones, y sus ambiciones. El nombre de "El comité de la muerte" se debe a la Sesión de Mortandad de casos clínicos donde los estudiantes de medicina y maestros se reunen para discutir las causas de mortalidad de un paciente y si dicha muerte pudo o no haber sido evitable.
Este libro yo lo recomendaría para los médicos en sus diferentes niveles, ya que algunos se sentirán identificados y otros recordarán sus peripecias. Y ¿por qué no? le dan una repasada a la medicina, con algunos de los casos clínicos que se exponen (sobretodo para nefrología y cirugía general).

Pedestrian. The title is more interesting than the narrative

This was a very interesting book about doctors, residents, interns, RNs, patients, and teaching hospitals. The good, the bad, and the ugly. It was also about the wives who are left in the wake waiting for their husbands to return. All of this in the midst of the Vietnam War and the draft.

Tras leer El Médico y Chamán, tenía muchas espectativas. No sé si pueda ser por ello, o debido la traducción o a una edición antigua, me ha resultado una lectura difícil de seguir y monótona. Sólo en los últimos capítulos existe algo de acción. Hace alusiones a eventos importantes de la época en la que está enmarcada la historia, pero sin profundizar.

El libro se abre paso por las historias personales de los tres médicos cirujanos internos, las cuales se entrelazan por razones tanto profesionales como personales, avanza algo lenta la historia, pero no puedo decir que fue un buen libro, le faltó algo más, el final, fue como cuando uno termina la enseñanza media, lleno de lagunas.

This was a lovely book to read, great characters that will keep you interested in the storyline, this is a must read

This is my second Noah Gordon book. In this book, three young doctors are doing their residency at the Suffolk County General hospital. Each doctor is talented and goal driven. Each also comes from differing backgrounds, culturally and because of the unique family history of each one. Rafael Meomartino is Hispanic. Spurgeon Robinson is African American. Adam Silverstone is Jewish. In addition an older doctor, Dr. Harland Longwood figures prominently in the book. It is Dr. Longwood who conducts the death committee, which meets any time a patient does not survive. The question the committee must determine is if the death was avoidable or unavoidable. If it is deemed avoidable, then they determine how it could have been avoided. No one is punished for the death, but they all are expected to learn from it. Obviously it is a high stress time for the officiating doctor! Dr Longwood also happens to be the father-in-law of Rafael Meomartino. The book covers one year in the lives of these doctors, and each chapter bears the title of the name of one of the doctors. The story is revealed in each chapter through the experiences of one of the doctors, though because there is a lot of interaction between the doctors the others often figure into it. It is an interesting book in that the reader learns not only what is currently happening, but through flashbacks, learns each doctor's personal story. The book is very life realistic. Things work out better for some of them than others. Eventually the book just ends, with the reader having some sense, but no certainly, about how their lives will continue to unfold.

I have worked many years in the medical field as a registered nurse, so I am always interested in medical topics. This was a very good book, although very dated, with the everyday prices and different, very different lives from ours. But I enjoyed it very much and even the great difference from today's medicine, how much less they had to work with in the 60s. I wish there was a book telling us about the people who were in this book - what happened to them in a future life.
