The great thing about someone else buying my books is I read things I probably wouldn't have if left to my own devices. Not sure I would have chosen this for myself, but it turned out to be a great read. I was slightly let down with the very pat ending, otherwise would get a five. I guess I don't need things neatly wrapped up tightly at the end, and sometimes I appreciate when books leave me wondering. Was hoping for that here.

This was an amazing book! It really made you think about the lives of these people. I did not realize before reading this book that the Spanish Inquisition killed more than Hitler ever did. It gave me new respect for the culture and times of this century. Truly the world was in a great upheaval!
It was interesting to see how this author allows this young protaganist to rise above his circumstances and learn and find happiness.

When seeing references to Isabella's Spain, tend to think of this. Have appreciated several of Mr Gordon's stories. Recommend his Physician work most.

This book came highly recommended but I approached it with some hesitation because I dread the subject matter. I always say that I'm not going to read any more books about the holocaust, the inquisition, any genocide at all. Then I read a good story like this and am glad that I did. The story telling is superb. It rolls along quickly and gives so much history with out feeling like a history class. I really enjoyed it.

Vorweg eines: man darf dieses Buch nicht mit „Der Medicus“ vergleichen, auch wenn der Titel suggeriert, dass dies die Fortsetzung des Bestsellers ist. Es ist ein eigenständiges Buch und der Originaltitel „The Last Jew“ ist weitaus passender für diesen Roman.
In Spanien herrscht die Inquisition, man schreibt das Jahr 1492. Nach dem Mord an seinem Bruder und Vater steht der 13jährige Jona völlig alleine da, Juden ist es verboten, im Land zu bleiben, so dass er sich auf eine abenteuerliche Reise macht: er will der Inquisition trotzen und scheint, der letzte Jude Spaniens zu sein. Seine Suche nach dem eigenen Ich führt ihn quer durch Spanien und lässt ihn viele Abenteuer erleben.
Der Einstieg in den Roman ist zäh und unübersichtlich, wird doch erst mal erklärt, warum die Familie des kleinen Jona sterben muss. Auch der Sprachstil war mir fremd, er wirkte auf mich ein wenig angestaubt und unmodern, ich brauchte eine Zeit, um mich damit anzufreunden. Dann liest sich die Geschichte um Jona aber recht flüssig.
Er reist in Spanien umher, arbeite als Knecht, Schäfer und Waffenschmied, um sich Kost und Logis zu verdienen. Die Stimmung war mir einfach zu sorglos, die ständige Gefahr der Inquisition gar nicht präsent. Das ganze Thema der verschiedenen Religionen wurde immer nur gestreift, ich hätte mir mehr Einblicke in den jüdischen Glauben gewünscht.
Irgendwann erreicht der mittlerweile jugendliche Jona Saragossa, dort erkennt er seine Berufung zur Heilkunst und wird Medicus. Dieser Teil des Buches hat mir besser gefallen, ich habe wieder etwas lernen können über die Arbeit eines Medicus im 15. Jahrhundert. Das Ende wird dann doch noch spannend und interessant, der Kreis der Geschichte schließt sich und Jona findet endlich Ruhe im Kreis seiner eigenen, kleinen Familie.
Jona hat sicherlich ein schweres Schicksal zu meistern, dennoch war der Protagonist nur oberflächlich gezeichnet, mir hat es an Tiefgang gefehlt. Ich konnte keinen richtigen Bezug zu ihm aufbauen, kam er mir doch immer nur wie ein Abenteurer vor, nicht aber wie ein Verfolgter durch die katholische Kirche. Dennoch liest sich das Buch – nach kurzen Einstiegsschwierigkeiten – flüssig und schnell, kommt aber bei weitem nicht an „Der Medicus“ von Noah Gordon heran. Von mir daher leider nur 3 Sterne.

Me encantó este libro. Es una historia bastante larga pero muy amena acerca de la vida de Yonah, el último judío. Todo empieza en un momento que me parece muy interesante en la historia de España, la expulsión de los judíos, vista de una manera cercana de la mano de una familia destruida por ésta.

La vida de Yonah cambia repentinamente por lo que se huyendo y eje diciendo diferentes oficios, pero eso sí, nunca renunció a sus creencias.

Qué libro tan bien documentado! Noah Gordon nos ofrece una lectura fresca, entretenida e ilustrativa de una época marcada por la Religión.
Nos lleva a través de la historia de Yonah un joven judío que pierde a su familia debido a la expulsión de los judíos de España a finales del siglo XV, a raíz de esto debe huir, encontrar su nuevo camino de vida y lleva en secreto su verdadera identidad y su religión.
Un libro que te lleva por toda una explicación concisa, breve y muy bien documentada de la historia del Siglo XV y del judaísmo.
Muy recomendado.

Though entertaining, the tale fails to go deep enough as to grasp the roots of the life problems that beset the character, in fact is unable to catch the essence of the suffering of a Jew who is undergoing two different and simultaneous ordeals, making a living and retaining its religious heritage in a more than hostile world, Yonah seems to be very lucky everywhere he goes, though he is devoided of the required character traits of aggressiveness and commitment required to get by at his current situation, he is just a righteous man who make friends anywhere up to the point of getting married, inherit property and become rich, too many fortunate coincidences

In addition, the story exhibits poor research to provide colorful images of Columbus time Spain, the light descriptions fit in the entertaining narrative but lacking rich details expected to glitter in a work such as this one

Yonah Toledano is born in TOledo Spain in the 1400s - the height of the Spanish Inquisition. In 1492 all Jews are expelled or made to convert to Catholicism. Yonah's brother and father (silversmiths) are murdered and aat age 15 he escapes on a burro determined to honor the memory of his father by remaining a Jew. He zigzags across SPain workins as a shepherd, an armorer, a seaman and eventually discovers secrets of his past.

A great tqale of adventure and life in the 15th century.

I really enjoyed The Last Jew, but at the same time it made me so angry. As far as I know it's quite historically correct, and the treatment of Jews in the 16th century upsets me. Genocide is always horrible, and when it's brought about by Christians who really ought to know better, it makes it a so much more tragic and shameful action.

It's not as well written as Shaman and The Physician but still well worth reading.

Que gran libro que tiene como marco histórico la expulsión de los judíos de España a finales del siglo XV,durante el reinado de Isabel La Católica. La historia tiene como personaje principal a un joven judío que logra escapar y evadir siempre el temible brazo de la inquisición,a pesar de su voluntad de no ser nunca un converso. Junto a él se viven muchas aventuras, pasando por varios peligros y oficios que al final le ayudaran a crecer y a obtener la madurez necesaria para sobrevivir e incluso llegar a develar muchos secretos. Es un placer leer a Noah Gordon. Me encanta.

Hay novelas que se disfrutan en cada página. No sé cómo lo logró Gordon. El libro fue tan bueno, incluso en la traducción hecha en España (lo que normalmente estropea cualquier literatura, por buena que sea). La "sabia" decisión de los reyes católicos de correr a todos los judíos de España, vista através de un judío que decide quedarse. Cau-ti-van-te. De los libros que lamentas que terminen.
