Tercer y último libro de la trilogía de la familia Cole, y primero en el que el heredero del nombre Rob J. Cole recae en el sexo femenino. Envuelto en los dilemas morales del aborto y problemas laborales concernientes a seguros y grandes cadenas... después de haber trabajado en grandes hospitales se nos narra el regreso a las consultas rurales.

De lectura ágil y rápida, sin embargo me dejó mucho que desear.

I loved this book so much. It touches some subjects which I consider very important and it is as well-written as the 2 first books of the saga.

Puff no terminó de convencerme

El medico es un libro maravilloso, que muestra de manera impecable el mundo de la medicina en la epoca de la peste negra, el chaman tiene buen desarrollo y aprendes mucho de la epoca de la guerra civil estadounidense y convivis un poco con los aborigenes de la region. En este libro siento que no hay mucho de aquella magia que no se recorren las generaciones Cole de manera satisfactoria y no hay nada epico ni de misticismo de la epoca moderna que quiere reflejar. Solo es un relato normal, bien armado, te tiene interesado pero no llega al nivel que sientes al leerlo con respecto a los otros libros de la trilogia.
Toca un tema en especial muy controversial con respecto a la medicina pero solo lo enfoca muy sesgado, con todo lo que ya has escuchado no aporta nada nuevo, no siento que aprendi mas, solo veo que colabora a la dicotomia de una manera agresiva y no busca el consenso, ni enseñar bien los puntos de vista.
Me gustaron muchos aspectos como el de el amar la profesion y buscar aquel lugar donde uno esta desarollandolo mas por amor a ella que por solo el dinero, el crecimiento de una mujer fuerte con sus convicciones serias.
Para mi es un 6.

Iako nema istorijskih činjenica kao prvi i drugi dio, ovaj mi je najzanimljiviji. Možda zato što je napisan u realnom vremenu, a možda i zbog životne borbe i pitanja sa kojima se svi susrećemo.
Bilo mi je žao gasiti čitač i prekidati sa čitanjem.

I liked this book very much. It is the story of RJ Cole, doctor. This is the last book of a trilogy about the Drs. Cole. The first two were about lands far away and long ago. The other docs were men and RJ is a woman. She has inherited "the Gift" that some of her ancestors had, in that she can feel the imminent death of a person simply by holding their hands and sensing the outcome of their health.
There is alot going on in this book. Three women have been friends for many years and we follow their struggles as they become doctors and the paths they choose in their lives and careers.
RJ eventually becomes a country doctor after leaving a bad marriage and a career in Boston. Her father is a good mentor and she confides in him and has a good relationship with him. He is not sure about her decision but supports her. She does well in the country and is well received after some time.
She has a love interest, David in her life and it is complicated and becomes more so as the story moves along. He has a daughter, Sara, who is wary of hert at first, but then accepts her into their lives. Then there is tragedy and you must keep reading...
She volunteers in an abortion clinic. I sighed as I read that part and it is part of a fallen world, so I guess the author must have included it for a reason.
For awhile, she lives alone in this house on the verge and the lyrical language of her life is truly poetical. The imagery that comes to mind when reading all the outdoor scenes is really lovely. You can close your eyes and feel like you're right there. Beautiful!!
I was sorry to see it end, but, alas, there are several more books by Noah Gordon that I haven't yet read!!

I liked this least of the 3 novels telling the history of the cole family physicians. here the protagonist, a female physician, struggles with the ethical issues surrounding abortion as well as the personal ones. it's much less absorbing for me than the prior 2 books - this operates on a more reduced scale - much less dealing with the broad sweep of history. perhaps if i weren't knowledgeable about the social context and costs surrounding abortion i would have found it more absorbing. praise to gordon for having a female protagonist but i wish it was a more compelling read. spoiler alert: what i did like is that there was no happily ever after ending, and i liked that the characters were life sized rather than heroic.

Tulajdonképpen nem rosszabb, mint a sorozat első két része. Ha azt nézzük, hogy lektűr, akkor egészen jól állunk, mert az igényesebbik fajtából való. Ami hiányzik ebből és megmentette a másik kettőt, az egy nagyon egyszerű ingrediens: a történelmi máz, fény, aura. Az első kötet lehetne mondjuk egy fametszet, ha Európában akkor ismerték volna az ilyesmit, de nem. Legyen krónika, pergamenen, gyönyörű iniciálékkal, keleti beütéssel. A második lehetne pl. egy csendélet-tájkép-portré-csatajelenet olajban + egy dagerrotípiával megtoldva. Ez a harmadik pedig egy reklámújság-kollázs autószalon-hirdetéssel, tájkép hegyekkel polaroid-fotón, női jogok és egy csipet feminizmus. Hát, mivel ez napjainkban játszódik, valamiért nem vonzó a nagyközönség számára, a jelen és a közelmúlt (a nagyon közelmúlt) nem érdekes (amúgy ez a legérdekesebb, csak hát menekülni mindig kell). Pedig itt is sikerül megtalálnia írójának a megfelelő történelmi miliőt: abortuszharcok dúlnak a prűd és szekularizálatlan Amerikában, orvosokat lőnek le papok – ez a könyv fontos magját képezi. Ugyanígy az önálló, magasan képzett nő léte is, azaz felbukkan a gender fogalma is (érintőlegesen). A téma is fontos: a nagyon magasan képzett orvos kivonulása az Isten háta mögé, mert segíteni akar. Segíteni sosem volt divat, ergo ez sem érdekes. Nekem kedves, bár ebben a részben semmilyen jelentőséggel nem bíró motívum a zsidóság újbóli felbukkanása (az első kötetben nagyon fontos volt, a másodikban sem elhanyagolható), filoszemita vagyok, nem tehetek róla. Nem is akarok tenni róla :). Ami még fontos, az az, hogy Gordon itt végre igazán hangjára talált, így, összehasonlítva, azt vagyok kénytelen megállapítani, hogy a régebbi korokba történő visszakalandozások nem mennek neki olyan jól, mint a mába tett kiruccanások. Ez a könyv bátrabb és határozottabb volt, mint az elődei. De, mint már mondtam, nincs romantika (mármint történelmi), izgalmas múlt, ismeretlen történések és évszázadok pora. De van ez is olyan, mint a többi, noha az első még mindig a legjobb a trilógiából.
A fordítás mindhárom könyv esetében csapnivaló.

After the first two in the series, this was a huge disappointment. This book is set in modern day, and lost all of the power of the previous two, which were historical fiction. Not to mention that this is the only book in the series with a female protagonist - and instead of gracing her with the import of the lead characters, this book almost read more like a romance novel! All martial spats and traumatic new loves. If I didn't know otherwise, I would never have believed It was the same author.

The writing was still interesting enough to keep me turning the page, but I was ready to be done with this one.

Mismos elementos en la tercera parte de la Saga del Médico.
El escritor norteamericano nos presenta en la última parte de la saga los mismos elementos de las anteriores obras, pero curiosamente no resultan ni aburridos ni predecibles pues logra involucrarlos de forma entretenida y orgánica dentro de la historia relatada. Sigue tratando los temas de religión, política, economía y por supuesto, medicina, en un relato de crecimiento y autoayuda cimentado en el conocimiento y la vocación médica involucrando viajes de aventura, intercambio cultural, hechos históricos importantes, criticas a la discriminación y dilemas médicos.

4,5 estrellas. De la trilogía me ha parecido el más flojo incluido el final.
Si algo he aprendido con este libro es que la sanidad en estados unidos es terrible.

Ich finde echt gut, dass die Trilogie nicht aus drei gleichen Büchern besteht, sondern sich auch bewusst in ihrer Art unterscheiden.

Leider hat mir die Hauptcharakterin R.J. nicht wirklich gefallen, die moralischen und politischen Fragen von Abtreibung und amerikanischem Gesundheitssystem werden zwar angesprochen aber mir nicht gut genug behandelt.
Auch das (in der Trilogie typische) Thema der Religionen ist hier nicht so gut umgesetzt wie im Medicus.

Die beiden ersten Teile der Trilogie waren deutlich spannender. Natürlich auch weil du zu aufregenderen Zeiten spielen. Die einzige "Bedrohung" für R.J., die Spannung bringt, sind radikale Abtreibungsgegner mit Morddrohungen. Und die Lösung für das Problem?
Keine Abtreibungen mehr machen.
