I had previously read Gordon's The Physician which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was intrigued by this jacket because I thought he only wrote historical fiction, and this book is set in contemporary times. It's the last in the Cole family trilogy. Gordon never simply has his characters act; he always lets you into their thoughts as they struggle with choices they have to deal with in life.

I found myself disliking the modern setting of this book because I enjoyed the historical settings of the last two so much. Also, Gordon's difficulty with female POV showed through in the writing in certain moments--for example, the character keeps celebrating how "women can do anything" in moments when she learns a new skill or succeeds at something, which really rang false. And, ultimately, this felt like a romance novel, while in his other books the romance was important to characterization rather than plot.
