Cuando decidí leer el libro Chaman, el segundo libro de la trilogía de la familia Cole me imaginaba una secuela en donde continuaba en el siglo XI y continuaba la historia tal vez con los hijos del Dr Cole establecidos en Escocia; mi sorpresa es que la historia brinca hasta el siglo XIX con un descendiente del Dr Cole llamado también Robert J. Cole que llega de Escocia a los Estados Unidos; el libro abarca tanto la vida del Dr proveniente de Escocia como posteriormente de su hijo que a pesar de las adversidades que le presenta la vida consigue su sueño de ser Dr. La novela se lleva a cabo en una etapa histórica en Estados Unidos y detalla varios acontecimientos como la colonización de las partes centrales del país, el ataque que sufrieron los nativos por parte de los colonizadores y la Guerra de Secesión.

Excellent second book about the medical Cole family, started first in The Physician. This time the family has moved to Illinois from Scotland and the patriarch of the family becomes a physician in a small town. His youngest son, Shaman, is made deaf by an illness but desires also to become a physician and must overcome many barriers to follow his dream. The time period is during the wars on the Indian tribes as the white government takes away their lands and pushes them onto reservations as well as the civil war and its immediate aftermath. Excellent historical fiction novel.

Se me ha hecho un poco pesado (desde luego más que "El médico"), sobre todo la parte de la guerra. Es una buena novela, muy bien documentada, y entretenida; pero a veces da la impresión de que se extendía sin razón aparente en algunas partes.

No es mala, pero me gustó más "El médico" :)

This book and the first book in the series, The Physician, are two of the most well-researched and immersive historical fiction books I’ve read. They are similar to The Pillars of the Earth in that they both have those qualities. I highly recommend these two books to anyone who likes thorough historical fiction, especially medical history. The books aren’t boring, btw.

Patiko istorinės detalės. Galbūt tai nėra stiprus istorinis romanas, bet mano žinios apie JAV pilietinį karą kuklios, tad visai užteko knygoje esančių trupinių.

Una historia increíble. Retrata muy bien la época en la que sucede el libro, la guerra de secesión, la discriminación, las enfermedades, etc. La trama esconde secretos y te los revela cuando menos te lo esperas. Unos personajes muy reales que encanta verlos madurar y duele verlos morir. La gracia que tiene el autor para escribir me parece impresionante, ya que te puede narrar que el protagonista está cabalgando al pueblo vecino que te fascina. Un diez.

Mi-a plăcut foarte mult acest volum.
Am fost foarte curioasa de istoria Americii.
Știu ca aceasta carte este o poveste; dar se bazează pe o istorie adevarata.
Nu ma așteptam la evenimentele care au urmat; unele pasaje au fost probabil descrieri lungi istorice, altele au fost foarte interesante.
Deabia aștept sa citesc și volumul 3.

Molto ben scritto, appassionante ed intrigante. Mi è piaciuto molto!

Kas vaikystėje ir (ar) paauglystėje mėgote knygas apie indėnus arba nuotykines knygas, kuriose įsikuriama naujose vietovėse, tiems tikrai patiks. Čia ir JAV pilietinis karas, ir tuometinė medicina, ir šiek tiek saukų genties ritualų, truputis kriminalo ir keršto, daug tikėjimo ir meilės.

Realmente entre 3,5 y 4.
Creo que no la he disfrutado más por la traducción o la edición de ebook que tenia, porque a veces la redacción dejaba bastante que desear.
Pensé que se me haría más denso pero realmente me pareció muy interesante la época y la evolución de la vida de estas dos generaciones de médicos Cole (padre e hijo). Y Chaman tiene un carisma especial.
La parte de la guerra de secesión es la que se mi hizo un pelín más larga

800 years passed. A distant descendant of Robe Cole (who had passed down the generations his medical talent and a lancet that used to belong to Avicenna) has to flee Britain due to his involvement in the Scotch nationalist movement. After various trials and tribulations in Boston, he settles at the Western border of the nascent United State, where he saves lives, including the woman he would marry, and with whom he would have a mute son nicknamed Shaman, who will pick up the Coles’ torch. The book, as many others, appears more timely now than 25 years ago when it was written. The political background (or, in this book, it is, maybe, the foreground) is the first violent bout of xenophobia, of those that periodically shake our country. In the mid-18-century the object were Irish-Catholic, who were, obviously, poised to destroy the Anglo-Saxon work ethics and Protestant moral, pay allegiance to Pope and not to the U.S. and would have never change their disgusting customs in generations. A good fraction of them were criminals and rapists, according to notorious “Know-Nothings” and the only way to save the fledgling American democracy was to deport them all once and forever. So, the Coles, even though not being political, got sucked into American political life, siding with Native Americans, abolitionists, Catholics, the North (as the time progresses into the Civil War), and through Shaman’s and his father’s eyes we see arguably the most turbulent time in the history of our country.
