I had a lot of trouble with this book. What is weird is that I've enjoyed the author before, making me wonder if it was me. Did I gloss over the story line? Not sure.

The story follows multiple characters dealing with very dark actions by a gang. But what is behind the gang? Who is telling the truth?

I think it might have been the sad state of families in gangs and in poverty which may have turned me off.

Well constructed and very engrossing. A trial brings together friends from 25 years earlier when they were around 20 in the late sixties. Issues from that time are interspersed with the issues brought up in the trial.

3.5 stars…I enjoyed the courtroom drama part but there was too much other stuff and lots of characters to keep up with. It got monotonous and a bit hard to follow at times…or maybe it was so long that I tended to lose interest at times. Audiobook narrators were great.

Slow for a bit in the beginning but then picked up and got better. Story is told simultaneously from 2 different periods in time. I feel like some of the story being told in the Vietnam era seemed to be a bit slow. Overall a good book and I will move on to the next one in the series.

Turow's best, some very competent writing here, and occasional brilliant use of different narrative voices. Could have used tighter editing, but enjoyable throughout. America of 2018 has changed appreciably from the positivist 1996. We get old and learn nothing, and unlike Abraham, there is no substitute for pain on our Mount Moriah.

This is a hard book to read. The first 100 pages or so are excruciating. Trying to recreate the language of the urban, black street gangster is laughable and embarrassing. The book tends to get better as it goes on. I never leave a book unfinished but this one tempted me.

Great Book

I’ve read the first three of the series and this is the best so far. Well written and good characters. The story is complicated with plenty of twists and surprises, but it kept me wanting to read until the end…and even that had a surprise.

I dislike when narrative changes characters voice and time frame
This episode was just too long and scattered for me to follow
I could not relate to any of the characters
I read a series in order but will take a long time to try another episode of

much ado about nothing

A good exercise but exhausting study in character construction and social history that strays way beyond the initial story line….. much to the author’s detriment.

The plot felt repetitive and slow. The second plot line from the 1960 was too boring and too slow, at the same time not providing much to the current plot. Overall the plot makes sense, but the book was just too dragged out. Unfortunately, I has to drop the series after this.

I struggled through this book. Had some of the same difficulties as other reviewers keeping track of characters. I am glad I stuck with it. There were a lot of themes; man's inhumanity to man being a prominent one.

I must confess that I don't like Turow's stories. Only one well written is PRESUMED INNOCENT. This social history of characters did nothing for me. The courtroom procedure or trial was ineffective. Again, not into social interaction in a 500 page story.
