Got this mainly for the boxing story "Fifty Grand", which was excellent. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of the 'nothing happens' variety of short story that make up 90% of this book. Sure, Hemingway's spare prose might be good, but when it services inconsequential tales filled with faint characters, there's just not much to enjoy.

I read many of Hemingway stories from this edition. And then he becomes one of my favorites.

Oficialmente este es el último libro de Hemingway que he sido capaz de conseguir y ahora lo he terminado.
El proceso de lectura, como con cualquiera de sus otros libros, ha sido magnífico e inspirador, prácticamente una experiencia espiritual.
No obstante, al finalizarlo, el sentimiento que deja tal vez sea equiparable al náufrago que a pesar de administrar concienzudamente sus contados recursos en una isla desierta o en un pequeño naufragio a la deriva, enfrenta el impostergable momento en el que, por necesidad y por ninguna otra buena razón más que por necesidad pura y simple, debe hacer uso de ellos y con el pleno conocimiento de las consecuencias.
Por obvias razones, el personaje en cuestión, al igual que el lector de estas historias cortas, no puede sentirse más que nostálgico ante el recuerdo del recurso que ha decidido agotar. Ante la partida novelista de todos aquellos tenientes norteamericanos destacados en Italia, viajeros, toreros en ciernes y boxeadores venidos a menos que nunca más serán una novedad sino un simple recuerdo, y a lo sumo, un viejo y querido conocido pero nunca más un nuevo encuentro.
En fin, todos sabemos que es necesario sobrevivir.
Así de difícil es acostumbrarse a la idea de dejar ir, luego de haber disfrutado, un buen libro como este.

Hemingway's true element was the short story and the selection in this collection shows the development of his status as a master in that particular art form. Despite being technically astute, Hemmingway's writing style and stories are definitely an acquired taste.

I personally find it interesting that many people criticize Hemmingway for being unabashedly male and particularly of the classic 'macho' variety. This can be a turn-off for many readers, but I read it as refreshingly honest and true to who he really was as a person. Sure, it might be uncomfortable to know that there are men who really do not -care- what the women around them think or, heaven forbid, feel and even go so far as to distance themselves from female company for long periods of time, but it's real. And that's what Hemmingway's writing is...it's reality...a slice of reality from usually a single 'macho' point of view.

What I enjoy most about Hemmingway's stories is that they make you think...at least if you can get engaged in them in the first place! Rarely did I finish a story with a total feeling of ambivalence and lack of curiosity. Almost always I was left with questions and I think this sense of incompletion was critical to Hemmingway's writing style, demonstrated in his abbreviated sentence structure, staccato word flow and ambiguous sections of dialogue.

No doubt that these stories are fantastically well written. Reading this in 2019 however I felt uncomfortable with a lot of the content. Big game hunting, bull-fighting, a variety of and repeated racial slurs, poor treatment of women. Sorry but I just couldn’t “enjoy” that stuff. I recognise the brilliance of Hemingway’s writing but can’t give it the ultimate five star review.

I've read this book before and I'm reading it again. Hemingway writes exceptional short stories. There are some Nick Adams Stories I've enjoyed. Also there is "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber." It's one of my favorite Hemingway short story. The story is very macho and is about hunting big game. Both subjects are very much out of fashion but I like the story anyway.

It's a lot but I enjoyed most of it

Ani slovami neviem opísať, ako som si tieto poviedky užila. Ak niekto chce začať s Hemingwayovou tvorbou a nie je si istý románmi, tak toto je skvelý úvod - od tém až po štýl písania, ktorý sa postupne vyvíja. A samozrejme, je tu aj pár poviedok, kde je aplikovaná iceberg theory - moje obľúbené.

Czuć że to książka złożona z kilku zbiorów opowiadań. Im dalej tym w zasadzie są gorsze opowiadania. Są w tym zbiorze opowiadania średnie, są opowiadania w porządku, są takie które dłużą się i są zwyczajnie nudne, są i takie które są wybitne. Tych ostatnich jest kilka, ale jedno zwłaszcza mi zapadło w pamięć - „Niepokonany”, opowiadanie o trzeciorzędnym torreadorze który jeszcze raz próbuje wyjść na arenę, jeszcze raz spróbować przebić się do serc publiczności, uprzednio wyprosić profesjonalnego pikadora o asystę i wybłagując organizatora walk o przyjęcie. Wszystko w cieniu brata, uważanego za rodzącą się gwiazdę areny zabity przez byka którego wypchana głowa spogląda ze ściany.
