I want to give this book five stars. It's so fun to read and the artwork is wonderful. But the little 17-month old in whose library it now belongs, is a little slow to warm up to new books. So I'm withholding a star until he responds to it the way he does to Little Blue Truck and Go, Dogs, Go!

Hilarious and creative, this 2001 Caldecott Honor Award winning book was a fun read. Farmer Brown's problems begin when his cows find a manual typewriter and discover how to use the keyboard.

Posting various notes throughout the farm for Farmer Brown, they at first demand warm blankets when it is cold.

Then, the chickens get in out the demands. All too soon Farmer Brown has a farm with no milk or eggs.
The ducks, previously neural arbitrate so that the farm can run smoothly.

The cow's will give up the typewriter in return for warm blankets. Then, the ducks, bored with their little pond, find power and demand a diving board.

The illustrations are humorous, the text brings a smile to the reader, and this silly book is a bright, sunny tale of empowerment gone amok.

Es un lindo libro sobre las vacas que se pueden escribir. Ellos van a la huelga en la granja mientras trataba de negociar con el agricultor. Excelente para los niños que leen español o niños y adultos que están aprendiendo español.

It's a cute book about cows that type who go on strike on the farm while trying to negotiate with the farmer. It's great for children who can read Spanish or children and adults who want to learn Spanish.

QUYỂN SÁCH CÁCH MẠNG

Bò đánh máy mở đường cho con gái đến với thế giới sách nói chung và sách ít chữ nhiều tranh đẹp mê ly nói riêng. Ờ thì dù chưa biết chữ nhưng con nghe mẹ đọc vậy chắc cũng không khác mấy với mẹ nghe sách nói.

Mẹ đã cố gắng nhập vai tốt nhất có thể, đầu tiên là bò, sau đó là vịt. Một lần, hai lần còn thú vị, chứ đến lần thứ n - khi mà trang sách đã khá nhàu rồi á - thì mẹ chả thích thú gì nữa, vì cứ phải b ò ò ò, b ò ò ò, b ò ò ò..., quạc, quạc, quạc... liên tục thôi. Con gái hãy mau lên lớp một để tự đọc ngôn ngữ của bọn bò và vịt nhé.

Bây giờ viết đôi ba dòng cho quyển sách thì có hơi muộn rồi. Vì sao ư? Vì giờ mẹ và con đã có rất nhiều cuốn sách tranh khác để so sách. Đặt nó và  Trái tim của mẹ lên bàn cân thì, nội dung - nó nhỉnh hơn một chút chỉnh (thật ra là nhiều hơn một chút), hình thức - nó lép vế một tí teo (chính xác là chỉ nhiêu đó thôi).

Sau này có thể tự mình trò chuyện với sách, con sẽ thấy điều đó, điều khác biệt về nội dung ấy. Chứ giờ mẹ nói thì cũng mất hay đi. Quyển này có mấy chữ đâu mà mẹ đã viết đến chừng này rồi lại thêm chừng nữa thì chắc các bạn khác không còn hứng thú đọc Bò đánh máy đâu con ạ.

(Có điều, nếu nói thì ngắn dọn thế này: Bò đánh máy là đồng minh của  Chuyện ở nông trại. Dòng này thì dành cho các bạn mẹ, con không cần bận tâm nghen.)

Giờ thì mẹ chỉ xin nói nhỏ với con rằng thì là mà mẹ thấy nét vẽ hơi bị không đẹp nha, theo kiểu nguệch ngoạc ngô nghê con ạ. Và vì mẹ con ta không am hiểu gì về hội họa nên cứ xì xầm thế này thôi nhá. Có khi đó là tuyệt tác, vì không thế thì sao bà Lewin lại có được tiếng vang lớn nhờ minh họa cho Bò đánh máy chứ.

Thôi, nói bấy nhiêu đủ rồi con ạ. (Có khi dư luôn.)

For International Children’s Book Day (April 2, 2020) I’m treating myself to a review of one of my favorite children's books. The cows have found a typewriter and use it all day. Farmer Brown is a tidbit annoyed at it but doesn’t mind too much. That is until the girls start to use their typewriter skills to make demands. When their demands aren’t met, they go on strike. Eventually their sister chickens join them. Farmer Brown has to figure out what to do about the strike, and sends his offer with an intermediary duck, who has plans of its own. There is something about cows on strike and using typewriters of all things to communicate that just makes me laugh. The artwork of the book, done by Betsy Lewin, is beautiful. I can heartily suggest this to any children’s book reader out there.

Want to explain solidarity and organising at work or school, for better conditions to a 5 year old? This book has it pegged. The cows developed new skills to communicate their demands for better conditions and the ducks learnt, despite their usual petit-bourgeois inclinations. Inspiring.

Who doesn't love a good pro-union children's book? I implore thee!

A wonderful children's book with fun animals getting the best of Farmer Brown. Enjoyed by my daughter.

Why I Read It: This book was recommended in a farm themed Koala Crate I did with my niece.

Format & Source: Paperback. We had purchased the book from a garage sale, but not read it yet.

Synopsis: One day, Farmer Brown's cows find a typewriter. They start writing passive aggressive notes to farmer brown. Farmer Brown negotiates with the cows. Eventually they reach an agreement, and the cows give the typewriter to Farmer Brown's ducks...

What I Thought: This was a hilarious book. I had a hard time reading it aloud without bursting into laughter. It's a wonderful children's book, and entertaining to read as an adult too. I really appreciated that the author didn't insert any humor for adults, as happens in many kids books. My niece thinks it's very silly, and I think her opinion is probably the most important one.

The Bottom Line: Recommended to all kids old enough to understand the concept of letter writing (3 and up?) I think it would also be good for children learning to read.
(Adults can also read this book, if they are interested in reading about cows typing.)
