I find Steinbecks writing an amazing portrayal of American Life and History. I find his charachters very real doing the best they can in tough situations.
These are some of my favorite short novels - not a big fan of Grapes of Wrath or East of Eden, but The Moon is Down, Cannery Row, and Of Mice & Men are some of the best American Literature written.
A book I was really excited to read but i found a bit dissapointing. Is good but a bit slow. It paints the picture of poverty in America during the early 1900s.
Well, you know how I feel about Steinbeck. I wish I could write like him. I used to teach this book and believe that Steinbeck represents the depth and pain and beauty of the human spirit like no other author...I love the social commentary chapters in this book for their poetry (and I see them again in East of Eden), yet I do remember feeling (only during some points) that I wanted to get on with the story...
a four average, but at least two of these books are 5 stars. Steinbeck was an author who talked easily to his readers and a nation in a hard time for America. Nothing is as wonderful as opening up a Steinbeck Book and stepping into a different time and living through hardships, heartache and heart touching moments.
