This is probably the least scary Bentley Little book I’ve read (and I’ve read a lot of them) but I think it might be one of my top three. I find this especially impressive because for almost the entire book I sort of really hated the character telling the story.
I really wasn't sure how to categorize this book. It's a little horror, conspiracy, fiction, ..... It was also too long & a little boring. Jason is a guy who likes to write letters. Starting at a young age he is a master craftsman for writing letters. Throughout his life he wrote to a pen pal, complaints so he could get free stuff, threatening letters to get politicians & policies changed, letters to get people removed from job, movie reviews, music reviews, etc. We go on a journey with him & his letter writing that lands him a job with a nameless company that eventually all he does it write letters day in & day out BUT there is something amiss. The book was bizarre after that and really not worth the read
This is the first Bentley little I read. I have to admit that I wasn't all that impressed. But it did lead me to some of his better novels. I learned not to give on an author on the first book. ( ex. King and koontz have dropped some bombs) I gave him a second chance with the store, the town, etc. some are hit and miss, but like I said, literature is like that sometimes. All together a decent read. Get it used off amazon or something. Or if you got some rare crap I can't find like Edward lee lets make a deal.
I finished most of the book so it’s only fair I give a rating for what I have already read.
The first half of this book was amazing IMO. I also loved how it was geared toward the shitty people that rate books and movies for money regardless if that item was good or not. Just look to Instagram, you’ll find a TON of book recommendations that I bet most of the people recommending have never even read…
I also think it’s a shiny example of most people that write negative reviews or poke at certain politicians, to stir the pot as they say, are clearly individuals that are just not happy with themselves.
Now for the negative.. I got about 100 pages till the end before I threw the towel in. This book took a turn into Boring-Ville and never effing left. My free time is limited and I refuse to spend that time forcing my self through a book that’s not keeping me entertained.
BUT I have enjoyed most Bentley LITTLE books so this definitely won’t be my last. Quite the contrary, this was my first book by him I didn’t love.
This book shares qualities with Stephen King's work, Neil Gaiman's American Gods, and Tim Power's Last Call, in the sense that it starts out firmly in the real world, and ends up in some shadowy realm that shares our existence. This is the first of Bentley Little's books that I've read, and for the most part, I liked it. As long as you don't mind too many elements of fantasy in horror, then you'll probably like it too.
I appreciate this Bentley Little book every bit as much as Stephen King. This is my first taste of his work and I will read more from him.
I enjoyed the main character's development. Starting out in youth, laying the foundation of madness, to the last reaches of adult insanity, he reminds me of our tenuous hold on our own justifications, our excuses for our behavior.
I'm really torn on this one. On one hand, the narrative was compelling throughout and had a decent premise, but on the other hand, I LOATHED the protagonist, and found the ending ho-hum. A first person narrative from the perspective of a psychopath isn't really my thing, at least in this setting. But still a decent ride, and I could see this being a 5-star read for the right person. But not me.
This book was not what I expected. It was good and very fast paced at times - but it was slow in others where I found myself wanting to skim. Fans should read it, others I would not start with this one.
