It was great book. I really enjoyed it all the way though. The ending really disappointed me though, I really wanted it to end differently then it did but that doesn't effect the rating I gave it, I was just upset by the way it ended. It's one of those endings that you have to make up what happens, if it ends good or badly. Jason throw away everything for this Letter Writer thing; his friends, his wife and son. And when he was able to finally get out he had nothing. No house, no family and the only true friend he had left was one from college that didn't even no he was missing. Although it was really the lost of his wife and kid that truly drove him to going to the building to become a serous Letter Writer in the first place. So I don't blame Jason one bit, I blame that bitch of an ex-wife he had.
It had a very slow start and nothing really happened until like page 100 and normally if something don't happen in 50 or less pages I drop it faster than a hot potato but there was something about the book that made me want to continue reading to see what would or if any thing would happen. And the book did not let me down.
This is the first Bentley Little book I have read and I was not disappointed. He is a great writer......his words flow easily and he gets you caught up in the story very easily. This book was very intriguing and it had you guessing all the way through as to who was good/bad/real/false/etc. The "monster" in the book was a little cheesy....but all in all the story was a great read and I will definitely be reading more of his books.
I love Bentley Little. When I want a twisted tale his are the books I pick up. Dispatch was no different in level of weirdness and unsettling creepiness. As a letter writer myself, delving into the pages of a book about a character who finds he has a certain power with writing letters and the way it corrupts his world, it makes me think twice about picking up a pen! Definitely a good read, one I recommend to anyone who likes Bentley Little or horror in general.
I really enjoyed this book, from beginning, middle, then the miserable end. By miserable I mean it could have been much better, so disappointing. I do not know how what I could have done to make the end better. This ability the protagonist had, and the evil ends he took throughout his life were refreshing. He was not some goody goody, he wanted what he wanted and went to any lengths to obtain it. Which is unusual for that type of character. When I was in my teens I had an idea for a story similar to this, but I never pursued it.
I found this to be a very slow paced book. Although I must say now that it develops into an excellent finale. After 200 pages of a 386 page novel, I was still waiting for something to grip me. Maybe I have stuffed myself on gore too much recently in books but this was different to all the other horror books I've read. Seriously, at one point, approx 150 pages in, I was going to drop the book altogether. I'm glad I didnt because there was an excellent message in the book which I encourage you to read and fathom out. I'm still not sure that the message was worth the battle through the tedious first half of the book, but still it was one of those lessons to learn and think about. I will read more Bentley Little novels but I will definately need more from him to put him in the upper echelons of authors. I think I need to try The Store and His Fathers Son next to see if I am really going to let Little into my Horror Novel Hall of Fame.
Creepy take on the art of letter writing with a supernatural twist. Jason begins his letter writing in fifth grade, during a pen pal assignment and learns to manipulate situations that gain him and his friends free fast foods and movie tickets. This quickly warps into affecting the lives of others and eventually current world events. A bit slow in parts, but overall a fantastic read. Highly recommended.
This is my first book by Little, and it was...weird. I really like his writing style, and he kept me wanting to see what was happening next, but it was so weird. All in all, a good read, and I look forward to trying him again.
I didnt enjoy this one as much. Its an incredibly imaginative idea, but when I read Bentleys books I do it for a good scare and they were much fewer and far between here than his other books. I kept wondering when the title would come into play or make sense to me.
