E bravo Ethan! Ho comprato questo libro dopo aver visto al cinema il film Boyhood. Linklater mi piace molto e, visto il bellissimo sodalizio che si è creato tra il regista e l'attore, in realtà mi aspettavo di trovare la sua influenza anche nel romanzo. Le aspettative si sono rivelate vere solo in parte, per questo è stata una piacevolissima sorpresa. Ci sono le sue elucubrazioni mentali, quella sorta di filosofia del quotidiano, quei personaggi un po' normali un po' sfigati, ma c'è anche una storia e la struttura di un vero romanzo. Le storie di Linklater in genere non hanno un inizio e una fine, sono "solo" vita che scorre, ma una cosa è il cinema, un'altra sono i libri. La sorpresa per me è stato notare la netta emancipazione dallo stile del regista. Emerge chiaramente la personalità di Ethan Hawke come vero scrittore, che lascia poco al caso e all'interpretazione personale, ma costruisce, pagina dopo pagina, una vera storia che, di fatto, sono i suoi protagonisti. Poi ci si può riconoscere o meno. Io ho sempre qualche difficoltà a immedesimarmi con gli scrittori americani, anche se ultimamente sto apprezzando proprio questo: il limitarsi a osservare, che secondo me è anche molto educativo… Comunque, per tornare al libro, ha un suo stile e una sua struttura, tutto molto coerente e naturale, senza troppe forzature. Sono molto contenta di averlo letto!

When I first read this book years ago I was very surprised about how much I like it.Having just Re-Read it, I still do. This book follows a young coulee going through life finding out what they want and what's good for them. Well written and for a story that is now 18 years old it is still very current.

I liked the writing style and how some of the book referenced Houston and even some of the setting was in Houston. I also liked the ending, happier than his last novel's ending, which I still enjoyed despite the unconventional ending. I also liked the twists the novel had which I genuinely did not see coming.

Hawke can masterfully create faulty, unreliable characters. They are toxic, yet so utterly human. Men you never want to meet but are surrounded by, or maybe you even are one of them. Modern naturalism.

Es sind Bücher, die die Welt grundsätzlich ändern, und werden sofort Klassiker. Der alte Mann und das Meer, Sünde und Schuld, Buddenbrooks, nur manche zu erwähnen. Außerdem sind es Bücher, die die Welt zwar nicht retten, sind aber wichtig und bereichen die Leser. Aschermittwoch von dem amerikanischen Schauspieler Ethan Hawke ist einer der Letzteren.
Hawkes zweites Buch ist ein nicht typischer Coming-of-Age Roman. Unsere Hauptcharaktere sind schon Erwachsene (Jimmy ist fast 30, Christy 26 Jahre alt), aber ihre Leben werden ganz anders aussehen, denn sie werden ein Kind bekommen. Die Beziehung, die bisher mal eine ganz normale jugendliche Romanze war (wovon man wahrscheinlich mehrere in seiner Jugend hat), wird ernst, das junge Paar muss wichtige Entscheidungen treffen, Verantwortung annehmen und erwachsen sein, damit sie auch gute Eltern werden können.
Aschermittwoch ist ein doppelter Ich-Roman: beide unserer Helden erzählen die Geschichte aus ihrer eigenen Perspektive. Aus diesem Grunde weiß der Leser ganz genau, was sie fühlen, wie sie auf verschiedene Situationen reagieren, und dass es für die beiden eine fast unvorstellbar schwierige Situation ist, ihre Leben in die richtige Bahn zu lenken.
Hawke schreibt nicht nur gründlich, sondern auch mit großem Einfühlungsvermögen und der Roman lässt einfach nicht nach: ganz genau bekommt der Leser auch zu spüren, was für einen riesen Kampf es ist für dieses junge Paar endlich mal verantwortungsvolle Erwachsene zu sein.
Die Prosa ist ein Meisterwerk: leicht zu lesen, und wie das Meer: auf der Oberfläche ist es ruhig und glatt, nicht mal eine winzige Welle bricht die Illusion, aber darunter ist unheimlich tief und reich von Gedanken und Aussagen.
Nein, Aschermittwoch wird kein Klassiker, dazu ist es zu stark auf ein Liebespaar konzentriert und erzählt nicht von der Mehrheit der Menschen, aber ein wunderbarer Roman, den zu lesen, ein absolutes Vergnügen ist.

Knowing Ethan Hawke as an actor, I was surprised and delighted to discover that he has written and published three works of fiction. The first I recently read, Ash Wednesday, was everything I had been waiting for in a novel for a long time. It was as natural as breathing. Hawke is one of my favorite actors. If I see him in the line up for a film, I trust that it will be fantastic work. Now I know that his name on the front of a book cover means the same thing.

i love ethan hawke and think that his dilettantish pursuits (see: writing and directing) have become far, far more interesting and successful in recent years. but man oh man, this isn't very good. lotta bad dialogue that'll make you forget he's been nominated for screenplay oscars twice and a pretty satisfying plot resolution. if you're gonna get into ethan hawke's writing see blaze, before sunset, or before midnight.

ok, non è un capolavoro. e si sente che l'autore viene dal mondo del cinema: cioè, pagina dopo pagina ti sembra di vedere davvero il film tratto dal libro scorrere davanti ai tuoi occhi. insomma, la storia è di quelle che abbiamo sentito raccontare altre volte ma il racconto scorre e funziona benissimo: consigliato, e non solo ai fan dell'ethan hawke che fa l'attore a hollywood.

Mi capita di comprare un libro, ma poi passa del tempo, a volte anni, prima di leggerlo.
Alcuni se ne stanno lì in attesa del momento giusto. Così è successo con Mercoledì delle Ceneri di Ethan Hawke: è un libro che era là non ricordo più da quanto tempo. Immagino mi sia piaciuto il titolo all'epoca. Mercoledì delle Ceneri è il giorno in cui finisce il Carnevale e inizia la Quaresima. Il tempo della rinuncia, della purificazione e della preparazione al rinnovamento della spiritualità.
Qui è narrata la storia di due ragazzi Christy, un’infermiera troppo dura con se stessa, e Jimmy, un sergente interessato più alle droghe e alle bravate con i commilitoni che a servire l’esercito. Alternando il proprio punto di vista i due raccontano la difficoltà di un legame, la loro fragilità, il senso di inadeguatezza, il loro passato che influenza il presente. In un viaggio on the road, da Albany a Houston passando per New Orleans si amano, si detestano, si lasciano, si uniscono nella speranza di riscattarsi e mettere ordine nelle loro vite. Mi è piaciuto? Credo di essere sempre più sensibile alla lingua, alla sua costruzione e alla capacità di sostenere il racconto che quando è elementare, semplice, ma non incisiva, alla lunga, anche se ha il fine di essere realistica e mimetica, la scorrevolezza si trasforma in viscosità- ho bisogno di essere ipnotizzato e avvolto - se poi la storia perde vigore, il vortice dei sentimenti, dei desideri, gira sempre intorno allo stesso punto: non vedo l'ora che il tutto si risolva come ormai è prevedibile che si risolva. I titolo rimane affascinante, così come il tentativo di raccontare Il Mercoledì delle Ceneri dell’età adulta dopo il Carnevale della gioventù.

In the name of honesty I will tell you that I was skeptical going in... because he's Ethan Hawke, a guy who probably wanted to add "novelist" to his already long and gorgeous resume.

More honesty: Two chapters in I realized that I needed to carry a notebook because I had to pull over constantly to rewind the audio (do we still call it rewinding?) and write down my favorite passages. There were so so many.

"To love each other and live in the truth. To not lie at all. To maintain a perspective on the other and not wholly judge them in context to yourself..."

Suffice it to say I think Ethan Hawke is brilliant. He reignited the romantic in me, someone I thought was dead. I will eventually buy this book and highlight three quarters of it.
