Tough old cop trying to get by.

Just aight. A pretty unremarkable novel in my opinion. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. The title most likely the best aspect. The novel was a nice time waster but eminently forgettable, though written well enough that I finished it....

Hoke Moseley is no Philip Marlowe. Fat, balding, dentures that don't fit... but I'm going to miss him now that I've finished the series.

(2 1/2). This book was written less than 30 years ago but it feels like it came from another lifetime. Great old style mystery feel. Hoke Moseley is just a terrific protagonist. Slighted but enduring, he is a super solid cop who knows how to take care of himself and how to make the system work, even when it works against him. Lots of plot here, about 3 stories going on at once, personal and professional, that keep you turning pages the whole time. A fun read.

This is the fourth and last novel in the Hoke Moseley series. Willeford died shortly after this one. This is too bad for many reasons, obviously, not the least of which is that the ending here set up a very interesting concept for sequels which will never be written. I found Hoke unlikeable and offensive in the beginning of Book 1. By the time I finished Book 4, I had become fascinated by him. This series was addictive, although I can't explain the attraction.

I wish there were a dozen more Hoke Mosley books. Too bad this is the last one.

The last in the Hoke Moseley trilogy is a gem. Willeford, one of the great, but sadly, under the radar, crime writers of the late 20th Century died soon after the publication of this book. The Way We Die Now is a fitting bookend to a magnificent career.

La sua situazione non è proprio delle più ordinarie, visto che divide la casa a nord di Miami, nel sobborgo di Green Lakes con una ex collega cubana Ellita Sánchez e suo figlio Pepe di un anno. Ellita, invece, era andata a vivere con lui per dividere le spese quando il padre l'aveva cacciata di casa perché era rimasta incinta dopo un'avventura di una notte. Usufruendo di una pensione di invalidità a causa di una ferita in una sparatoria, lei e Hoke decisero che dividere le spese poteva essere una buona idea viste le loro famiglie sgangherate, così da allora convivevano pacificamente senza secondi fini per entrambi. Tutto fila liscio fino a quando Donald Hutton, condannato per omicidio grazie alla seconda indagine della carriera di Hoke, prende casa di fronte alla sua, in coincidenza del lavoro sotto copertura che costringe il detective a stare lontano da casa per qualche giorno. Il lavoro consiste nel cercare prove per incriminare Tiny Bock un vecchio cacciatore di alligatori, convertito all'agricoltura sfruttando come schiavi messicani e haitiani per lavorare le sue terre. Le cose non andranno minimamente come previsto, Hoke sarà costretto a ricorrere a tutte le sue risorse per venirne fuori e una volta fuori troverà altre brutte sorprese ad attenderlo.
Mi ha colpito molto l'ambientazione in una Miami sconosciuta, fatta di emarginazione e povertà assoluta, anche la trama è interessante ma alcuni particolari abbattono clamorosamente la qualità del libro. Ci sono molte lungaggini riferite al cibo alle ricette e alle tavole imbandite che annoiano, ma soprattutto ci sono alcune decisioni del protagonista che non hanno davvero alcun senso.

Quirky and hardboiled noir, I have really developed an appreciation of this author and his unique voice over time. Sadly, this book was the last in the four volume Hoke Moseley series, I would recommend reading the series in order starting with the great "Miami Blues". In my opinion, Moseley is as much of an original and well developed character as any in crime fiction, at least in terms of what I have read so far...
