I've been thinking of this quote a lot lately (from Jordan Peterson)
"We walk a very thin and narrow edge and we are very lucky when things aren't degenerating into chaos or rapidly moving into far too much order. And its not an easy thing to stay on that line. You can tell when you are on that line because things are deeply meaningful and engaging. But if you're
not existentially terrified of the consequences of wavering off that line, you are not awake."
I dont really get it but i feel like I should devote my life to try and live by it. Its a bit, (a bit!) easier to understand than the mystical words of Thomas Moore but its similiar in tone.
I think this book took me about 6 months to finish. Maybe a year. Jeepers. Its too much. It might be the wisest book ever written and it may be total BS. Thomas Moore seems to have rose above this whole thing , and unless you have too, I don't think you can understand what he is saying. I know I don't. But something about it rings true. That we are complex creatures and to impose too much order or to give to much licence are both detrimental to our souls. Moderation is a grown up idea. It implies you are taking ownership of your morality. And it feels like the universe/God is gonna make you own it, one way or the other. At least it does with me
"Faithfulness to the soul is the only approach that ultimately saves us from either a soulless existence or insanity"
"Whenever we imagine a relationship sentimentally as being good only when it is warm, we do a disservice to that element of the soul that wants coolness"
"Eros invites us into darkness, because the darkness of unknowing is beneficial to the soul...erotic morality is life-affirming rather than prohibiting. It trusts desire, and therefore, paradoxically, it doesn't breed compulsion"
Sound scary? That's why it took me so long to finish it. I don't even know if what he is describing is morality. I don't even know if what he is describing leads to happiness. I'm not under the impression he cares about either. Life to him is about the hero's archetypal quest. Life is as crazy as the old myths suggest it is. Surrender to the flow/conquer the dragon/walk into the dark entrance of the cave/follow the light. Its what your soul needs. o.....k....
hows this?- GOD IS BIGGER THAN YOUR RELIGION, GOD IS NOT A STEP ABOVE THE PROPHETS, NOPE, EVEN BIGGER, KEEP GOING, YEP, FURTHER, THATS RIGHT, STARTING TO FEEL THE LOVE YET? KEEP GOING, BIGGER THAN THAT. GOD IS A REAL THING, BACK UP SOME MORE, GOD THE TRANSCENDENT LOVE COMPASSION UNDERSTANDING WHO WONT PAY YOUR LIGHT BILL BUT WILL SIT WITH YOU IN THE DARK? I think so. I hope so
