I keep on trying to decide if this is a high 3 or low 4. When the topic was about commodities trading, as well as near the end - when the entire story was revealed - I was somehow captivated. But when the story reverted to familiar and romantic affairs, the characters really weren't gripping enough for me. I suppose I'm not fully convinced how the crime per se was related to the drama besides the characters involved, such that they could be happening in two different books and I won't notice. And I can't help but compare this to the strength of the back half of book 1, from the reveal all the way to the conclusion; this didn't have that. Anyway, I might mellow to this over time, tip back to 4, but for now, it's a 3 for me. It's still an okay book, all things considered.

Many novels in the thriller genre, legal or otherwise, are very plot driven, which shouldn't be all that surprising. Part of the "thrill" is jumping from event A to event B to event R that ties back to A. "Burden of Proof", on the other hand, is very much a character-driven story, dealing with defense attorney Sandy Stern as he tries to unravel the consequences of his wife's suicide. There is a legal conspiracy at play, and it ties nicely into the plot, but this is about a man dealing with the primary regrets of middle-age: "Did I emphasize my career over my family?", and "If I could do it again, how would I change it?"

A nice change, although I would have preferred a bit more courtroom drama.

A wonderful book that I have read through twice now. Even though it is not as popular as Presumed Innocent, I still love many things about this book. I love the legal part of the story but I highly enjoy the journey we go on uncovering the lies within Sandy Stern's marriage and family as well as seeing how he copes with life as a widower. Very well done.

Turow has an amazing talent for getting the reader inside a character's mind. This one does it best of all.

So I love these books. I have read them out of order however no matter as the players change and yet stay the same. This was a particularly family drawn and emotional book! I love Sandy! The main character and immigrant trying to live the American dream! Hard work and family aside is how that’s done but watch your family in the end blood? Is thicker than money and success.

Ugh, the last 1/4 of the book was ok/ interesting but I BARELY made it to that point....the first 3/4 of the book were painfully long and drawn out.

This one was a struggle for me to get through. Just found it highly unbelievable and quite frankly-a big disappointment after Presumed Innocent. Sandy Stern was unforgettable in Presumed Innocent-in this one-he is just an old horn dog lusting after everything that moves. He doesn't seem to be the same character at all-ridiculous.

Hopefully the next book by this author will be better.

Originally read in 1991.

Entirely too long and laggy in the beginning, I also heavily cringed throughout and when his pregnant DAUGHTER's nipples rubbed up against him. GTFO

I wanted to like this one… a legal thriller, my fav… but unfortunately, no. This was my first Turow book after watching Presumed Innocent on Apple TV (which is fantastic so I was looking for more). 3/4 of this book didn’t seem like a legal thriller, but more about a man and his relationships after his wife committed suicide (and boy, did he move on fast). I almost dnf’d this midway through but stuck it out and was going to rate it a 1 star. But the last 1/4 of the book was exciting, and when it actually became a legal thriller (imagine if the whole book was like that). Based on other reviews, this seems to be how Turow writes—long, slow buildups. Maybe I’ll eventually give him another chance, but who knows?

Although I've given it 4 stars there were sections in the book that were a struggle to get through. The necessary complexity of US investment fraud and associated law was somewhat alien to a Brit such as I so I simply had to plough through it in the hope that my lack of understanding would not be too distracting. I did enjoy the way each character was drawn and developed, essential because this was not a story of a courtroom battle but the interaction of the players and their influences on the lives of others. Ultimately I became somewhat ambivalent as to who would get their comeuppance but the 'denouement' was well crafted and drew me in. I could sense the tragedy that would be bound to haunt Stern and Helen and linger in the lives of so many. The Burden of Proof
